相关技术描述
使用有机发光二极管(OLED)的平板显示器提供高亮度和宽视角.使用自发射模式,OLED不需要任何背光,因此在从弱到中等亮度的外界光线的条件下很有效。可是,在强外界光线的情况下,如阳光直射时,必须向OLED施加相当大的能量以获得所需的亮度.另外,需要大电流以激励含有发光结构的元件.因此,在各种环境光线的条件下,应用到液晶显示器(LCD)的反射和再发射技术对于LCD来说是很有效的.可是当使用该技术时,在弱外界光的条件下需要背光,这导致显示器尺寸的增加和能耗的增加.
美国出版的专利申请20020027537A1中公开了在发射和再发射模式下都可工作的OLED的结构.PQD具有类似OLED的结构,并且可以在不需背光的发射模式和再发射模式下工作.

发明内容

在行扫描过程中,通过同时施加扫描电压到扫描线260和施加数据电压到数据线250,对于发射模式操作,激励电路215施加一正向电压在PQD200的正极和负极之间,而对于光致发光熄灭操作,施加一反向电压在PQD200的正极和负极之间.对于这些操作,在基准和负极电压端子230和240上必须施加合适的电压.标号201表示施加在PQD正极和负极之间的电压.更具体地说,在发射模式工作操作中,标号201表示施加的正向电压,在再发射操作即熄灭操作过程中,表示施加的反向电压.
当多个驱动电路被连接到N根扫描线和M根数据线的各个交点时,可以构成一个N×M矩阵显示面板.图4示出了应用到3×3PQD矩阵显示面板的图3中所示的驱动电路.在每个扫描周期中,扫描线260a,260b,和260c相继被激励,以便经由激励电路215使用PQD 200再造视频信息.在每个扫描周期中,依照视频信息,控制电压被施加到数据线250a,250b,和250c.通过反复不变的扫描,视频信息被再造为PQD矩阵显示面板上的影像.
图5是图3中所示的驱动电路的详细方框图.第一电路310被连接到扫描线360和数据线350.第二电路320被连接到第一电路310,PQD 300,和基准电压端子330.该PQD 300被连接在第二电路320和负极电压端子340之间.以下描述涉及施加到基准电压端子330和该驱动电路的单独节点的电压.
在基准电压端子330施加零电压.相对PQD300的正极而言,负极电压端子340在PQD300的发射模式操作中有负极性,而在PQD300的再发射模式操作中有正极性.在图5中,标号301,341,351,和361表示在发射模式和再发射模式施加的电压.更具体地说,标号301表示在PQD300的正极和负极之间施加的电压波形.标号341表示施加到负极电压端子340的电压波形图.标号351表示施加到数据线350的电压波形图.标号361表示施加到扫描线360的电压波形图.
在行扫描过程中,当负扫描电压施加到扫描线360时,施加到数据线350的电压经由被激励时的第一电路310施加到第二电路320.第二电路320将被施加到基准电压端子330的电压Ub施加到PQD300的正极.因为负电压Uc被施加到PQD300的负电压端子340,所以正向电压被施加在PQD300的正极和负极之间.相应地,PQD300发光,对应一个亮的像素.假如零电压而不是负电压施加到数据线350,则零电压被施加到PQD300,因此该PQD300不发光,对应一个暗的像素。
即使通过施加零电压到扫描线360使第一电路310不激活,不管数据线350上的电压怎样,在PQD300上的电压保持不变,直到下一个行扫描过程.
再发射模式假定存在足够的用于光致发光的外界光.在行扫描过程中,零电压被施加到连接到第一电路310的扫描线360上,正电压Uc被施加到PQD300的负电压端子340.在这些条件下,假如零电压被施加到数据线350,第二电路320在PQD300的正极和负极之间施加一相反电压,用以光致发光熄灭.相应地,该PQD对应一暗的像素.假如正电压而不是零电压施加到数据线350上,则没有电压施加在PQD 300的正极和负极之间,因此该PQD由于光致发光而对应一亮的像素.
即使通过施加一正电压到扫描线360来关断第一电路310,不管数据线上的电压怎样,在该PQD300上的电压仍然不变,直到下一个行扫描过程。
图6是图5中所示驱动电路的框图,该驱动电路包括P-沟道薄膜多晶硅场效应晶体管(FET).为简洁起见,我们只谈到基于P-沟道薄膜多晶硅FET的像素电路.也可使用基于N-沟道薄膜多晶硅FET或N-沟道和P-沟道薄膜多晶硅FET的混合.
参考图6,根据本发明的PQD400的驱动电路包括作为第一电路的激励晶体管411和作为部分第二电路的驱动晶体管421.
激励晶体管411的栅极被连接到扫描线460.激励晶体管411的源极被连接到数据线450.驱动晶体管421提供发射和再发射模式所需的电压和电流到PQD400.驱动晶体管421的栅极连接到激励晶体管411的漏极.驱动晶体管421的源极连接到基准电压端子430,而漏极连接到PQD400。存储电容器422连接在驱动晶体管421的栅极和源极之间.施加到基准电压端子的电压被称作基准电压.在本发明一个实施例中,施加零电压作为基准电压.
在发射模式的行扫描过程中(在下面描述中对应于图9的时间段A和B),当施加一负电压到扫描线460时,激励晶体管411被接通,因此数据线450上的负电压被施加到驱动晶体管421的栅极.该驱动晶体管421被接通,并因此在PQD400的负极440施加负电压,使得在该PQD400的正极和负极之间施加一正向电压.相应地,该PQD发光并对应一个亮的像素.假如零电压被施加到数据线450,驱动晶体管421被关断,因此在该PQD400的正极和负极之间没有施加电压.相应地,该PQD对应一个暗的像素.
即使通过施加零电压到扫描线来关断激励晶体管411,不管数据线450上的电压怎样,施加到该PQD400上的电压持续不变地施加到PQD400上,直到下一个扫描过程.存储电容器422维持施加到驱动晶体管421栅极和源极的电压不变,直到下一个扫描过程.在发射模式中,为了接通两个晶体管411和421,扫描线460的电压必须小于数据线450的电压和激励晶体管411的阈值电压之和,并且数据线450的电压必须小于驱动晶体管421的阈值电压.
表1总结了发射模式中施加到P-沟道薄膜多晶硅FET的电压的功能,该FET的阈值电压为-2.5V.

再发射模式(对应于图9中的时间范围C和D)假定存在足够的用于光致发光的外界光.在行扫描过程中,假如当一正电压被施加到PQD400的负极440时施加零电压到扫描线460,激励晶体管411将被接通.假如零电压被施加到数据线450,驱动晶体管421被接通,因此在该PQD400的正极和负极之间施加一个用于光致发光熄灭的反向电压.相应地,该PQD400对应一个暗的像素.假如一个正电压代替零电压被施加到数据线450上,那么在该PQD400的正极和负极之间没有施加电压.相应地,光致发光发生,该PQD400对应一个亮的像素.
即使通过施加一正电压到扫描线460来关断激励晶体管411,不管数据线450上的电压怎样,施加到该PQD400上的电压持续不变地施加到PQD400上,直到下一个扫描过程.存储电容器422维持施加到驱动晶体管421栅极和源极的电压不变,直到下一个扫描过程.在再发射模式中,为了关断激励晶体管411,扫描线460的电压必须大于数据线450的电压.为了关断驱动晶体管421,数据线450的电压必须大于负极440的电压和驱动晶体管421的阈值电压之差.
表2总结了再发射模式中施加到P-沟道道薄膜多晶硅FET的电压的功能,该FET的阈值电压为-2.5V.

图9示出了图6所示驱动电路中信号的电压波形.在图9中,参考字符Sc表示施加到PQD400的负极440的电压波形.参考字符Ss表示施加到扫描线460上的电压波形.参考字符SD表示施加到数据线450上的电压波形.参考字符Sp表示施加在PQD400的正极和负极之间的电压波形.波形的高低对应于施加到基准电压端子430的电压.0V电压被施加到基准电压端子430。在时间段A和B,发射模式操作是有可能的。在时间段C和D,再发射模式操作是有可能的.PQD400的亮度取决于所施加的正向和反向电压.换句话说,在发射模式,根据PQD400的灰度值,在每个PQD400的正极和负极之间施加一个正向电压.在再发射模式中,根据PQD400的灰度值,在每个PQD400的正极和负极之间施加一个反向电压.在发射模式中施加在每个PQD400的正极和负极之间的正向电压的绝对值与PQD400的灰度值成比例.在再发射模式中施加在每个PQD400的正极和负极之间的反向电压的绝对值与PQD400的灰度值成反比.相应地,显示单元的灰度值可由控制电压,即数据电压控制.换句话说,根据本发明可以在显示面板上产生灰度显示.同时,对照图6中的电路,该晶体管的源极和漏极可以互换.
如上所述,依照本发明的驱动电路,根据该驱动电路激励晶体管的工作情况和驱动晶体管的工作情况,在发射模式和再发射模式都可控制PQD.在弱外界光下,该PQD可工作在发射模式,而在强外界光条件下,可工作在再发射模式.相应地,在强外界光条件下,可以以低电流获得满意的亮度,从而可以降低包含PQD和驱动电路的显示器的能耗和制造费用.
本发明不限于上述实施例,很明显,那些本领域的技术人员可以在不偏离本发明的精神的情况下进行各种变化.

Claims (18)

1. 用以驱动光致发光熄灭设备的电路,该设备有一个正极和一个负极,并被定义为在扫描线和数据线交点上的一个像素,该电路包含:
激励晶体管,该晶体管有一个连接到扫描线的控制电极和一个连接到数据线的输入电极,根据扫描线的电压,该激励晶体管被接通,并且当接通时,输出数据线电压;和
驱动晶体管,该晶体管有一个连接到激励晶体管输出电极的控制电极,该驱动晶体管连接在该电路的基准电压端子和该光致发光熄灭设备之间,并且当激励晶体管接通时,根据数据线的电压,将施加在基准电压端子的电压施加到该光致发光熄灭设备的正极,其中
在该光致发光熄灭设备的发射模式操作中,根据灰度值在该光致发光熄灭设备的正极和负极之间施加一正向电压,并且该正向电压的绝对值和该灰度值成正比;而
在该光致发光熄灭设备的再发射模式操作中,根据该灰度值在该光致发光熄灭设备的正极和负极之间施加一反向电压,并且该反向电压的绝对值和该灰度值成反比。
2. 权利要求1中的电路,其中,在发射模式,相对于施加到基准电压端子的电压,施加一个负电压到光致发光熄灭设备的负极。
3. 权利要求2中的电路,其中,在再发射模式,相对于施加到基准电压端子的电压,施加一个正电压到光致发光熄灭设备的负极。
4. 权利要求1中的电路,其中激励晶体管和驱动晶体管是场效应晶体管,该场效应晶体管拥有作为控制电极的栅极,和作为输入和输出电极的源极和漏极。
5. 权利要求4中的电路,其中激励晶体管和驱动晶体管是P-沟道FET。
6. 权利要求5中的电路,其中基准电压端子被连接到驱动晶体管的源极,并包括一个连接在该驱动晶体管的栅极和源极之间的存储电容器。
7. 权利要求6中的电路,其中该激励晶体管的栅极被连接到扫描线。
8. 权利要求7中的电路,其中该激励晶体管的源极被连接到数据线。
9. 权利要求8中的电路,其中该驱动晶体管的栅极被连接到该激励晶体管的漏极。
10. 权利要求9中的电路,其中该驱动晶体管的漏极被连接到该光致发光熄灭设备的正极。
11. 权利要求1中的电路,其中,在发射模式,当该驱动晶体管被关断,并且在该光致发光熄灭设备的正极和负极之间不施加电压时,该光致发光熄灭设备不发光。
12. 权利要求1中的电路,其中,在再发射模式,当该驱动晶体管被关断,并且在该光致发光熄灭设备的正极和负极之间施加一个反向电压时,该光致发光熄灭设备不发光。
13. 一种矩阵显示装置包含:
多根扫描线;
多根数据线,与扫描线垂直相交;
多个光致发光熄灭设备,每个光致发光熄灭设备有一个正极和一个负极,定义一个像素,并分别位于一根扫描线和一根数据线的交点处;和
多个驱动电路,每个驱动电路驱动一个相应的光致发光熄灭设备,并且
在该相应光致发光熄灭设备工作的发射模式中,根据灰度值在该相应光致发光熄灭设备的正极和负极之间施加一正向电压,其中,该正向电压的绝对值和该灰度值成正比,而
在该相应光致发光熄灭设备工作的再发射模式中,根据灰度值在该相应的光致发光熄灭设备的正极和负极之间施加一反向电压,并且该反向电压的绝对值和该灰度值成反比。
14. 权利要求13中的矩阵显示装置,其中每个驱动电路包含:
激励晶体管,该晶体管有一个连接到各个扫描线的控制电极和一个连接到各个数据线的输入电极,根据各个扫描线的电压,该激励晶体管被接通,并且当接通时,输出根据各个数据线的电压;和
驱动晶体管,该晶体管有一个连接到激励晶体管输出电极的控制电极,该驱动晶体管连接在该驱动电路的基准电压端子和该相应光致发光熄灭设备之间,并且当该激励晶体管接通时,根据各个数据线的电压,将施加在基准电压端子的电压施加到该相应光致发光熄灭设备的正极。
15. 权利要求14中的矩阵显示装置,其中,在发射模式中,相对于施加到驱动电路基准电压端子上的电压,该相应驱动电路施加一个负电压到该相应光致发光熄灭设备的负极。
16. 权利要求15中的矩阵显示装置,其中,在再发射模式中,相对于施加到驱动电路基准电压端子上的电压,该相应驱动电路施加一个正电压到该相应光致发光熄灭设备的负极。
17. 权利要求14中的矩阵显示装置,其中每个驱动电路的激励晶体管和驱动晶体管都是场效应晶体管,该场效应晶体管拥有作为控制电极的栅极,和作为输入和输出电极的源极和漏极。
18. 权利要求17中的矩阵显示装置,其中基准电压端子被连接到该驱动电路的驱动晶体管的源极,并且每个驱动电路包括相应的存储电容器,该电容器连接在各个驱动电路的驱动晶体管的栅极和源极之间。
