Abstract

A fashion accessory comprising a housing (1) and an insert. The housing (1) comprises a first opening (3) through which the insert is visible when in a rest position in the housing (1); and a second opening (4) through which the insert can be removably mounted in the rest position. The fashion accessory (1) allows a person to have a choice of the look and style of their jewellery or other fashion accessories, thereby allowing the inclusion of logos or other decorative elements to be inserted into the housing (1).

The present invention relates generally to fashion items, and in particular to fashion accessories with interchangeable inserts.

Background technique

Jewelry, clothing, and other fashion accessories available today are largely clustered in single-purchase, single-use models. Brand names, logos, and other graphics or designs are often a permanent part of an item, such as a printed logo, a label sewn onto an item, or embroidery on clothing or other accessories. For example, fashion accessories that are appropriate for casual use are often inappropriate for formal occasions.

One area where interchangeable designs have been attempted is jewelry. Jewelers try many ways to solve the problem of single-purpose jewelry by making a more varied and customized line. Below are some of the more common and appropriate forms.

Trinket Jewelry: The field of charm jewelry is not updated by any means. The retailer aims to solve the single-use problem by offering a set of "trinkets" that alter the initial bracelet model to reflect personal traits and aesthetics. However, such "memorabilia" forms are often an amalgamation of different parts rather than interchangeable components that make the overall appearance of the jewelry item more suitable for different settings.

Magnetic Jewelry: Magnetic jewelry has also seen a recent rise in popularity and especially in customizable options. Magnetic jewelry tends to be relatively inexpensive and relatively fragile. Its inherent nature of being able to take it apart and put it together makes it easy to practically select it to change one piece of jewelry into something more suitable for another setting. However, the amount of parts required to create a new model from an existing one makes it impractical.

As mentioned above, charm jewelry does allow a certain level of customization and personalization by the customer to the limit of personal collections offered by a particular jewelry company. Additionally, these trinkets are then worn together in the "scrapbook" equivalent of jewelry. While interesting and sometimes meaningful, these choices do not alter the inherent question of whether this particular item is appropriate for the environment. Charm bracelets for everyday use are fine in most situations, but may not be suitable for, say, formal dinners. The advantage of this approach is the range of options and accessibility. Most jewelers have a charm line that makes it very easy to get charms that reflect what is meaningful to you.

Magnetic jewelry happens to be very versatile, easy to use, fun and creative. However, it is relatively new and a wide range of parts is difficult to come by. That is, it is very easy to reassemble and make entirely new items out of existing parts. This is a great attraction for magnetic beads and pieces. On the other hand, the constant wearing of pieces and re-creations makes this type of jewelry fragile and unreliable.

In the case of other fashion accessories such as clothes and handbags, interchangeable parts similar to those described above are not seen. An example is a badge or pin that can be attached to a jacket, coat or other item such as a handbag. However, items designed to have replaceable parts are not readily available commercially.

Contents of the invention

The present invention seeks to provide a fashion accessory that can be adapted to allow multiple uses of a single model. The present invention may allow men and women to choose the look and style of their jewelry, clothing or other accessories.

The present invention seeks to provide a versatile object which can then be tailored to a specific purpose by means of interchangeable inserts. Thus, for example, an item intended for a casual function in the morning can easily be turned into a formal accessory in seconds by changing the insert. Similarly, company logos in work uniforms can be changed into different logos or designs, thereby transforming the uniform into casual or formal attire. Changing accessory designs can also allow items to be used more often.

According to an example aspect, there is provided a fashion accessory comprising a housing and an insert, wherein the housing includes: a first opening through which the insert is visible when in a seated position in the housing; and a second opening through which the insert is removably mountable to the seated position.

In another form, the insert is held in place in the housing by retaining means.

In another form, the retaining means includes at least one magnet.

In another form, the housing includes a skirt that prevents removal of the insert from the first opening.

In another form, the insert is shaped to substantially conform to the void connecting the first opening and the second opening.

The following descriptions, given by way of example only, are intended to provide a more precise understanding of the preferred embodiment or the subject matter of the various embodiments.

In the figures incorporated to illustrate features of the example embodiments, the same reference numerals are used to identify the same parts throughout the figures.

Referring to Figure 1 , there is shown a housing 2 suitable for forming part of a fashion accessory. The housing 2 comprises a first opening 3 through which the insert is visible when seated in the housing 2 . The illustrated embodiment is suitable for use as an item of jewelry. The housing 2 includes attachment points 7 to which chains, straps or other components of the jewelry item may be attached. This connection may be releasable, allowing chains, straps or other items to be interchanged. In alternative embodiments, especially where the fashion accessory is something other than a jewelry item, these attachment points 7 may not be present or may take another form.

Referring now to FIG. 2 , the housing 2 is shown from the side opposite to that in FIG. 1 . This side comprises a second opening 4 through which the insert can be mounted in a seating position. The skirt 5 can be seen in this figure. When in the installed position, the insert abuts against the skirt 5 , which thereby prevents removal of the insert through the first opening 3 .

Referring now to FIG. 3 , the magnet 6 embedded in the inner wall of the housing 2 is shown in cross section. This magnet 6 interacts with the insert to form retaining means preventing the insert from falling out of the housing 2 once in the seated position. The outer surface 8 of the housing 2 is preferably aligned with the outer surface of the insert when the insert is in the seated position.

Referring now to FIG. 4 , there is shown an insert 1 comprising an outer surface 11 and a cutout 12 . The outer surface 11 is visible through the first opening 3 of the housing 2 when the insert 1 is mounted in the housing 2 . The cutout 12 is shaped to abut against the skirt 5 when the insert 1 is in the seated position. This embodiment of the insert 1 also includes steel bars 13 along the long sides. The strip 13 may be magnetized to interact with the magnet 6 in the housing 2 and retain the insert 1 in the housing 2 . However, the strip 13 may be made of any other suitable material or may be absent in an alternative embodiment, relying instead on an insert 1 made only of metal which can be attracted by the magnet 6 . In yet another embodiment, the sides of the strip 13 or insert may be nickel plated.

Referring now to FIG. 5 , the opposite side of the insert 1 is shown, so that the opposite surface 14 is shown. The figure again shows an optional steel bar 13 which may be included in the preferred embodiment.

FIG. 6 shows a side view of the insert 1 . This figure shows the shape of the cutout 12 in more detail. When comparing this shape with the shape of the void in the housing 2 as shown in Figure 3, it can be seen that the insert matches the cross-section of the void. It can also be seen that the outer surface 11 will be flush with the outer surface 8 of the housing 2 when the insert 1 is in the seated position. The steel bar 13 is again shown in FIG. 6 .

Referring now to FIG. 7, an embodiment of a jewelry item 10 is shown, which in this example takes the form of a bracelet. The outer surface 11 of the insert 1 is visible through the first opening 3 of the housing 2 . Also shown is a strap 20 attached to the housing 2 .

When the insert 1 is installed in the housing 2, the magnet 6 will hold the insert 1 in place while the skirt 5 will prevent the insert 1 from falling through the first opening 3 and the user's arm will also prevent the insert 1 falls through the second opening 4. When in the seated position, the outer surface 11 of the insert 1 will be aligned with the outer surface 8 of the housing 2, thus giving a description of a continuous piece.

There are many alternative embodiments of the invention using different methods of securing the insert 1 in the housing 2 . These may include but are not limited to:

·Locking systems, similar to those built into doors, including hinges that open and close from the top or bottom of the housing, and use magnets, hooks, pins, latches, clasps, chains, keys, springs, or another system any of

a magnet, the magnet is laid on the underside of the covered housing and the insert is put into the housing from the top; or

A housing that allows the insert to slide in and out via an opening in the side of the housing, which in turn is held in place using magnets, hooks, pins, latches, clasps, chains, keys, springs or another system bit.

Other alternative embodiments may vary the shape and design of the housing and insert such that they may not be rectangular.

The insert 1 will be installed and removed from the housing 2 through the second opening 4 . To install the insert 1 , the housing 2 is first turned over to provide access to the second opening 4 . The insert 1 is turned so that the outer surface 11 faces downwards into the housing 2 . The insert 1 is inserted into the housing 2 until the cutout 12 of the insert 1 rests against the skirt 5 of the housing 2 . Insert 1 will be locked in place by magnet 6 . The jewelry item comprising the shell 2 can then be donned. In order to remove the insert 1, the jewelry item is first removed. The insert 1 can then be pushed down from the outer surface 11 so that it moves away from the housing 2 via the second opening 4 . The empty housing 2 can then be fitted with another insert 1 .

The present invention in the form of a bracelet 10 also lends itself to customization of the band 20 that wraps around the wrist, adding another level of personalization and customizability. Similarly, chains or straps for other types of jewelry may also be interchangeable.

The housing 2 is designed such that the insert 1 is easy to place and remove and cannot fall out of either opening of the housing 2 once in place. The simplicity of the design makes the invention very easy to use and reuse, reducing the difficulty of learning complex engineering or technical sequences.

The housing 2 and insert 1 as described above may be adapted to be part of a wide range of any fashion item other than jewelry items.

Referring to Figures 8 and 9, an example embodiment is shown wherein the insert 1 and housing 2 are mounted in a boot or shoe 30. The shell 2 will usually be permanently attached to the shoe 30 so that the insert 1 can be easily replaced. The housing 2 will be fixed in an opening in the wall of the shoe 30 . In this way, the insert 1 can be inserted from the inside of the shoe 30 closest to the person's leg, ankle or foot, depending on the position of the housing 2 . This allows the outer surface 11 to be visible when the shoe 30 is put on, wherein the insert 1 is easily replaced by taking off the shoe 30 and pushing the insert 1 out of the housing 2 through the second opening 4 into the interior of the shoe.

Preferably, the outer surface 11, the outer surface 8 and the outside of the shoe may all be flush. Also preferably, the opposing surface 14, the inner surface of the shell 2 and the inner surface of the shoe 30 may be flush, thereby allowing the shoe 30 to remain comfortable to wear.

In another embodiment, the shell is also removable from the shoe 30 , such as by being held in place by a pocket in the shoe 30 . In yet another embodiment, the insert may simply be held in the bag without the housing 2 . Such a bag may be similar to the bag in the further examples described below.

Referring to Figure 10, another example embodiment is shown in which the insert 1 and housing 2 are installed in an article of clothing, in this example a jacket 40. Any other item of clothing may be used, such as a shirt, pants, sports top, suit or coat. Furthermore, the housing 2 may be permanently fixed in the jacket 40, creating a hole when the insert 1 is removed. Similar to the embodiment described above, the outer surface 11 is visible from the outside of the jacket 40 and the insert 1 can be removed through the second opening 4 towards the inside of the jacket 40 .

Referring to Figure 11, an alternative method of mounting the insert 1 and/or housing 2 is shown. This method uses a bag 42 in which the housing 2 containing the insert 1 is placed and closed using a zipper 43 or similar closing means. In yet another embodiment, the housing 2 may not be present and only the insert 1 is placed in the bag 42 . At least the outside of the bag will be transparent, thereby allowing the insert 1 to be seen when installed.

Referring to FIG. 12 , another example embodiment is shown wherein the insert 1 and housing 2 are mounted in a wallet 50 . In a manner similar to the above-described embodiments, the housing 2 may be permanently fixed in the wallet 50 so as to create a hole when the insert 1 is removed. In one example, the outer surface 11 is visible when the wallet 50 is closed, as shown in FIG. 13 , and the insert is removed by pushing through a second opening towards the inside of the wallet 50 .

In another example embodiment, the insert 1 and/or the housing 2 may be held in a pocket 42 , similar to the above-described embodiment with the pocket 42 in the jacket 40 . Here, the pocket may form part of the wallet 50 .

Referring to FIG. 14 , another example embodiment is shown wherein the insert 1 and housing 2 are mounted in a handbag 60 . Like the wallet 50 and the jacket 40 , the housing 2 may form part of the sides of the handbag 60 . In an alternative embodiment, a bag 42 may be used wherein the bag 42 is attached to or forms part of the side of the handbag 60, and optionally the housing 2 may be used.

Many other fashion accessories incorporating the invention described above are conceivable and fall within the scope of the present invention, such as but not limited to necklaces, sunglasses, backpacks, school bags, travel bags, suit cases or other luggage, hats, beanies, watches , ties, gloves, belts, phone or tablet cases, laptop bags or covers, and hair accessories. In each case, the housing 2 is attached to or incorporated as part of the article so that the various inserts 1 can be attached or removed and replaced.

Obviously, many modifications can be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention.
