Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an opaque toothpaste for promoting oral hygiene.
Toothpastes containing a single fluorine-providing agent, such as sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride, or sodium monofluophosphate, have heretofore been used, assuming that commercial sodium monofluophosphate contains a minor amount of sodium fluoride.
Recently, e.g. British Patent 1,435,624 (Beecham Group) and U.S. Patent 4,152,419 (Colgate-Palmolive) describe oral hygiene toothpastes containing two separately added fluorine-providing agents, namely sodium fluoride and sodium monofluophosphate. However, toothpastes containing two fluorine-providing agents and a silica-containing polishing agent with a small amount of alumina included therein have not been described.
The invention relates to a toothpaste containing sodium fluoride and sodium monofluophosphate for promoting oral hygiene, e.g. by reducing tooth decay and remineralizing the enamel.
The toothpaste according to the invention has a high fluorine resistance and contains a synthetic silicon dioxide as an abrasive.
The opaque toothpaste according to the invention contains 0.5 to 2% by weight of an opaque agent, a binary, fluorine-providing system which provides 750 to 1225 ppm of fluorine from sodium monofluophosphate and 50 to 1000 ppm of fluorine from sodium fluoride, and 15 to 20% by weight % of a polishing agent which essentially consists of a synthetic precipitated silica with up to 1% by weight of aluminum oxide bound to it.
The sodium monofluophosphate is used in an amount to provide 750 to 1225 ppm fluorine to the toothpaste. This corresponds to about 0.5 to 1% by weight of sodium monofluophosphate in the toothpaste. The preferred amount is about 0.76% which provides the toothpaste with about 1000 ppm fluorine.
The purity of commercially available sodium monofluophosphate, Na2P03F can vary considerably. It can be used in any suitable purity, provided the contaminants present do not significantly affect the properties desired. Generally the desired purity is at least 80%. For best results, it should be at least 85 and preferably at least 90 percent by weight sodium monofluo-5 phosphate, and the remainder should consist primarily of contaminants or by-products from manufacture, such as sodium fluoride and water-soluble sodium phosphate. In other words, the sodium monofluophosphate should have a total fluoride content of over 12 and preferably over 12.7%, a free sodium fluoride content of not more than 1, and preferably not more than 1.2% and a sodium monofluophosphate content of at least 12 and preferably at least 12.1% have everything calculated as fluorine.
Sodium fluoride is usually added separately to add an additional amount of fluorine from 50 to 1000 ppm, e.g. from 50 to 100 ppm. This corresponds to approximately 0.01 to 0.2% sodium fluoride.
The polishing agent consists of a synthetic precipitated silica, which contains up to 1% by weight of bound aluminum oxide. Such polishing agents can also be referred to as aluminosilicates, in particular sodium aluminosilicates. Typical examples of these are described in U.S. Patent 3,906,090 (Colgate-Palmolive) and U.S. Patents 4,015,996, 25,410,757 and 4,122,160 (J.M. Huber). Commercially available materials of this type are ZEO 49 and ZEO 49 B (Huber) and Tixosil 53 (Sifrance). The polishing agent is used in an amount of 15 to 20% by weight.
If desired, a smaller amount of e.g. 0.5 30 to 1% dicalcium phosphate may be present as an additional polishing agent.
The toothpaste according to the invention is opaque. Since the polishing agent has a refractive index close to that of the humectant, e.g. of glycerin and sorbitol, which are typically used in toothpastes, 0.5 to 2% by weight of an opacifying agent, such as titanium dioxide or an equivalent material, is used. The toothpaste typically contains about 50 to 80% by weight of humectant, e.g. about 20 to 30% by weight glycerin and 40 about 30 to 60% by weight sorbitol (70% solution).
Other opacifying agents, such as zinc oxide, can be used in orally acceptable amounts that do not adversely react with the other components of the toothpaste.
45 water can also be used in small amounts, e.g. B. from about 1 to 7% by weight. If the toothpaste is to be stained, staining substances can be dissolved in water.
The toothpaste also typically contains a gel-forming agent, e.g. Natural and synthetic types of rubber and rubber-like materials such as Irish moss, tra-ganth, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and starch.
Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is preferred. The gelling agent content is typically about 0.1 to 5 and preferably about 0.1 to 0.5% by weight. The effect of the gelling agent can be increased by about 7 to 8% of a filler, e.g. B. fumed silica or a silica airgel can be supplemented. Zeosyl 200® (J.M. 6o Huber) is a desirable silica filler material.
Ge Suitable surface-active materials or detergents can also be incorporated into the dentifrices. These materials are desirable to provide cleaning, foaming and antibacterial properties to dentifrices depending on the particular type of surfactant selected. These detergents are generally water-soluble compounds and can be anionic, non-ionic or cationic. Ge

Water-soluble non-soap detergents are commonly preferred, i.e. synthetic organic detergents. Suitable detergents are known and include e.g. the water soluble salts of higher fatty acid monoglyceride monosulfates, e.g. Sodium coconut fatty acid monoglyceride monosulfate, higher alkyl sulfates such as sodium lauryl sulfate, alkylarylsulfonates such as sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, higher fatty acid esters of 1,2-dihydroxypropane sulfonate and the like.
Other preferred surface active compounds include the substantially saturated higher aliphatic acylamides of lower aliphatic aminocarboxylic acid compounds, e.g. those with 12 to 16 carbon atoms in the acyl group.
The amino acid content is generally derived from lower aliphatic saturated monoaminocarboxylic acids with about 2 to 6 carbon atoms, usually from monocarboxylic acids. Suitable compounds are the fatty acid amides of glycine, sarcosine, alanine, 3-aminopropanoic acid and valine with about 12 to 16 carbon atoms in the acyl group. The N-lauroyl, myristoyl and palmitoyl sarcosides are preferred for achieving optimal effects.
The amide compounds can be used in the form of the free acid or, preferably, as water-soluble salts, e.g. as alkali metal, ammonium, amine and alkylolamine salts. Specific examples of these are sodium and potassium N-lauroyl, myristoyl and palmitoyl sarcosides, ammonium and ethanolamine N-lauroylsarcoside, N-lauroylsarcosine and sodium N-lauroyl glycide and alanine.
The surfactant is typically used in an amount of about 1 to 5% by weight. About 1 to 3% sodium lauryl sulfate is preferred.
Any suitable flavoring or sweetening agent can also be added. Examples of these are flavoring oils, e.g. Spearmint, peppermint, wintergreen, sassafras, clove, sage, eucalyptus, marjoram, cinnamon, lime and orange oils as well as methyl salicylate oils. Suitable sweeteners include sucrose, lactose, maltose, sorbitol, sodium cyclamate and sodium saccharin. Sodium saccharin is preferred. The flavoring agent is typically present in an amount of about 0.5 to 15 and preferably about 1% by weight and the sweetener in an amount of about 0.1 to 0.2% by weight.
If desired, visible particles of nacreous flakes, e.g. Titanium dioxide coated mica flakes in which toothpaste is distributed, typically in an amount of 0.1 to 0.3% by weight. The toothpaste can also be streaked.
The toothpaste is usually placed in tubes, e.g. filled into lined or not lined aluminum tubes or lead tubes lined with wax.
The toothpastes should have a pH value that is suitable for practical use. A pH range of about 5 to 10 is particularly desirable. The specified pH value means the pH value determined directly on the toothpaste.
