Description
Cast iron brake element for railway and tram rolling stock. The present invention relates to cast iron brake elements, ie cast iron brake shoes and shoes, for railway and tram rolling stock. Its object is to allow the use, for these shoes and brake blocks, of hard cast irons having a much higher wear resistance than the ordinary cast irons currently employed.
All attempts hitherto to reduce the wear and tear of the brake shoes and shoes by the adoption of hard cast iron have failed. the impossibility in which one was. prevent chattering and seizing of hard cast iron brakes. The present invention overcomes these drawbacks by providing the practical means of lubricating the friction surfaces to the extent desired to eliminate any risk of chatter and seizure without impairing braking efficiency.
To this end, according to the invention, is inserted into the friction surface of the shoes and brake shoes made of hard cast iron blocks of coal having lubricating power, made of a hard coal paste similar to that used for the manufacture of coals. so-called electric. When put in contact with the tire treads when the brakes are applied, the good tank deposits a thin film of lubricant on the friction surfaces which prevents the hard cast iron shoe from grazing or seizing.
The problem of fixing the carbon blocks to the shoes and brake shoes which are lined with them is solved accordingly. in vention, simply by embedding in the cast iron, during the casting of the shoes and soles, the blocks which are preferably given a shape suitable for securing their anchoring in the cast iron without the need for fixing by screw or key , for example a dovetail shape. The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are respectively a ledge in elevation, a view from below and a section through the line III-III of FIG. 1, of a brake shoe, and fig. 4, 5 and 6 show a brake shoe respectively in elevation, in -uue from below and in section through the line VI-VI of FIG. 4.
The shoe 1 like the sole 2 are made of hard cast iron and carbon blocks 3 are inserted therein so that a face 3a of the block is visible to the friction surface 1a or 2a.
These blocks 3 are introduced into the mold before the casting of the cast iron. Their dovetail shape keeps them firmly in place, without any other means of attachment.
