DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0090] In various forms of the present system, price zones features can be utilized. The price of a commodity often varies from region or territory in the country or within a state, for example. The reasons for this variance often are due to taxing or regulatory bodies such as states or municipalities, or a national government, as well as transportation or production costs. For instance, the cost or price of fuel can vary from one zone to another, the zones delineated by taxing bodies such as states or municipalities, and/or by governmental regulations on fuel composition based on region and season. As another example, one grain or lumber mill may have higher production costs than another so that the price of its output is higher than that of another mill.
[0091] Components of the price for fuel may vary from zone to zone due to a number of factors. Depending on the point of origin for the fuel or its base crude (as well as for ethanol component products), the refinery or the harbor factors into the price.
Transportation costs, such as those due to pipelines, barges, tankers, truck or rail car transport, and other charges from source, to refinery or production plant, and to point of purchase, and shipping charges between these points, influence the price. Taxes and governmental fees, including state excise taxes, state inspection fees of both grade and service pumps, pollution or so-called gas guzzler taxes, coastal protection tax, and local/county excise taxes variably influence the price.
The price is also based on point of purchase (retailer or service station) costs, often determined by supply and demand conditions but also factoring local business costs such as labor supply (wages and salaries and benefits), equipment, lease/rent, insurance, overhead, and state and local fees.
[0092] The system, accordingly, may be provided with a database or table that accounts for the various price components so that a price cost presented to a user of the system considers each of these components for a specific zone. The table is periodically updated, as necessary and/or convenient.

In a form utilized by a user purchasing fuel for a nationwide fleet for instance, the system would first debit the account for fuel purchases for a specific zone in which a driver redeems and receives fuel, and the user provides rules for selecting which purchases, based on zone or grade or another basis, are then converted to compensate for further redemptions in a zone where there is an insufficient account balance.

The user may use the Convert Zone feature to convert part or all of the quantity in their pre-paid account to another price zone. Because each price zone has a different locked-in price, the user's account is adjusted up or down depending on the price differential between the price zones and the quantity converted.

By entering the system of the invention, and selecting the zone in which the purchase is to be converted for redemption, in this example from zone B to zone A, the system will authorize up to 66.67 gallons to be dispensed, as this is the quantity of fuel pre-paid for if the purchase was initially paid for in zone A. Because this is a pre-purchase system, there must always be a correlation between quantity and price paid that must be taken into consideration in the zone of redemption.

Claims (24)

a) providing an electronic system for purchasing tangible commodities over a communication network and which system includes a computer database containing commodity information concerning at least one product which may be purchased at a current time purchase price, and which purchase price is locked-in at time of purchase, for at least partial redemption at a future date;
b) establishing an account for the purchaser;
c) establishing an account balance for each commodity;
d) authorizing the purchaser to purchase a quantity of at least one tangible commodity from the electronic system;
e) electronically accessing the electronic system for purchaser transactions;
f) performing a purchaser transaction including purchasing from said computer database a first purchase quantity of a selected tangible commodity at the current time purchase price reflected in said computer database for redemption of at least a portion of the first purchase quantity of the selected commodity at a future date at the locked-in purchase price;
g) summing the first purchase quantity with the account balance to provide a current account balance in said account for the purchaser in the computer database for the selected commodity;
h) storing data in said computer database for the current account balance in an electronically accessible format;
i) performing a purchaser transaction including redeeming at least a portion of the current account balance of the selected commodity;
j) adjusting the current account balance to reflect the redeemed portion of the selected commodity;
k) repeating at least one of the steps of performing a purchaser transaction selected from purchasing from said computer database a subsequent purchase quantity or redeeming at least a portion of the current account balance; and 1) adjusting the current account balance to reflect the purchaser transaction from the step of repeating.
establishing an account in an electronic system for an individual user;
establishing a current balance for each commodity in the account; accessing the account by the user;
transacting with the electronic system for delivery of a selected tangible commodity, delivery being available on-demand at a plurality of specific locations; adjusting the current balance for the selected commodity in response to the transacting, wherein the step of transacting includes the steps of:
purchasing a purchase quantity of the selected commodity at the price at time of purchase to lock-in said price at time of purchase for subsequent delivery and redemption, redeeming subsequently a redeemed quantity of the selected commodity at a subsequent date, the redeemed quantity being at least a portion of the current balance; and permitting access to the account for repeating the step of transacting.
permitting the user to access account for a plurality of redemptions of the selected commodity, each redemption being a discrete quantity of the selected commodity; adjusting the single bulk quantity account balance for the selected commodity by adding each purchase to the single bulk quantity account balance and by subtracting each redemption from the single bulk quantity account balance; storing the adjusted single bulk quantity account balance in the electronic network.
