A container comprises a micro cellular foamed polymer, and a non- reactiv e gas contained within the micro cellular foam cells, wherein the container has a non-transparent appearance. The process for making the container compr ises injection molding a polymer preform having a non-reactive gas entrapped within the walls thereof, cooling the preform to a temperature below the po lymer softening temperature, reheating the preform to a temperature above th e polymer softening temperature, and blow molding the preform, to prepare a container comprising a micro cellular foamed polymer having a non-reactive g as contained within the micro cellular foam cells.
Claims (25)
1. A preform for forming a blow-molded container, comprising:
a micro cellular foamed polymer; and a non-reactive gas contained within the micro cellular foam cells, wherein the preform has a non-transparent appearance.

2. The preform according to Claim 1, wherein the preform has a white appearance.
3. The preform according to Claim 2, wherein the white color of the preform is about CIE L*a*b* Color Scale values of: L* values in the range of about 41.5 through 46.0; a* values in the range of about 0.10 through 0.25;
and b* values in the range of about 2.20 through 3.10.

4. The preform according to Claim 2, wherein the white color of the preform is about CIE L*a*b* Color Scale values of: L* values in the range of about 43 through 45; a* values in the range of about 0.12 through 0.2; and b*
values in the range of about 2.3 through 2.9.

5. The preform according to Claim 2, wherein the white color of the preform is about average CIE L*a*b* Color Scale values of: an L* values of about 44; an a* value of about 0.14; and a b* value of about 2.6.
6. The preform according to Claim 1, wherein the polymer comprises one or more of a polyester, polypropylene, acrylonitrile acid ester, vinyl chloride, polyolefin, polyamide, or a derivative or copolymer thereof.
7. The preform according to Claim 1, wherein the polymer comprises polyethylene terephthalate.
8. The preform according to Claim 1, wherein the non-reactive gas comprises one or more of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or argon.
9. The preform according to Claim 1, wherein the non-reactive gas comprises nitrogen.
10. The preform according to Claim 1, wherein the preform has a non-transparent appearance without the use of a coloring agent.
11. A preform for forming a blow-molded container, comprising:
a micro cellular foamed polymer, comprising one or more of a polyester, polypropylene, acrylonitrile acid ester, vinyl chloride, polyolefin, polyamide, or a derivative or copolymer thereof; and a non-reactive gas within the micro cellular foam cells comprising one or more of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or argon, wherein the color of the preform is about CIE L*a*b* Color Scale values of: L*
values in the range of about 41.5 through 46.0; a* values in the range of about 0.10 through 0.25; and b* values in the range of about 2.20 through 3.10.

12. The preform according to Claim 11, wherein the polymer comprises polyethylene terephthalate.
13. The preform according to Claim 11, wherein the color of the preform is about CIE L*a*b* Color Scale values of: L* values in the range of about 43 through 45; a* values in the range of about 0.12 through 0.2; and b*
values in the range of about 2.3 through 2.9.

14. A preform for forming a blow-molded container, comprising:
a micro cellular foamed polyethylene terephthalate; and a non-reactive gas comprising nitrogen contained within the micro cellular foam cells, wherein the color of the preform is about average CIE L*a*b* Color Scale values of: an L* values of about 44; an a* value of about 0.14; and a b* value of about 2.6.

15. A process for preparing a container, comprising the steps of:
injection molding a polymer preform having a non-reactive gas entrapped within the walls thereof and having a non-transparent appearance;
cooling the preform to a temperature below the polymer softening temperature;
reheating the preform to a temperature greater than the polymer softening temperature; and blow molding the preform, to prepare a container consisting essentially of a micro cellular foamed polymer having a non-reactive gas contained within the micro cellular foam cells, wherein the container has a non-transparent appearance.

cooling the preform to a temperature below the polymer softening temperature;
reheating the preform to a temperature greater than the polymer softening temperature; and blow molding the preform, to prepare a container consisting essentially of a micro cellular foamed polymer having a non-reactive gas contained within the micro cellular foam cells, wherein the container has a non-transparent appearance.
16. The process for preparing a container according to Claim 15, wherein the polymer comprises one or more of a polyester, polypropylene, acrylonitrile acid ester, vinyl chloride, polyolefin, polyamide, or a derivative or copolymer thereof.
17. The process for preparing a container according to Claim 15, wherein the polymer comprises polyethylene terephthalate.
18. The process for preparing a container according to Claim 15, wherein the non-reactive gas comprises one or more of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or argon.
19. The process for preparing a container according to Claim 15, wherein the non-reactive gas comprises nitrogen.
20. The process for preparing a container according to Claim 15, wherein the non-reactive gas comprises nitrogen at a concentration of at least 10% by weight.
21. The process for preparing a container according to Claim 15, wherein the container has a white appearance with a color of the container about CIE L*a*b* Color Scale values of: L* values in the range of about 41.5 through 46.0; a* values in the range of about 0.10 through 0.25; and b* values in the range of about 2.20 through 3.10.
22. A process for preparing a container, comprising the steps of:
injection molding a preform having a non-transparent appearance comprising one or more of a polyester, polypropylene, acrylonitrile acid ester, vinyl chloride, polyolefin, polyamide, or a derivative or copolymer thereof, the preform having a non-reactive gas comprising one or more of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or argon entrapped within the walls thereof;
cooling the preform. to a temperature below about 70 degrees Centigrade;
reheating the preform to a temperature above about 70 degrees Centigrade; and blow molding the preform, to prepare a container comprising the micro cellular foamed polymer having the non-reactive gas contained within the micro cellular foam cells, wherein the container has a non-transparent appearance.
injection molding a preform having a non-transparent appearance comprising one or more of a polyester, polypropylene, acrylonitrile acid ester, vinyl chloride, polyolefin, polyamide, or a derivative or copolymer thereof, the preform having a non-reactive gas comprising one or more of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or argon entrapped within the walls thereof;
cooling the preform. to a temperature below about 70 degrees Centigrade;
reheating the preform to a temperature above about 70 degrees Centigrade; and blow molding the preform, to prepare a container comprising the micro cellular foamed polymer having the non-reactive gas contained within the micro cellular foam cells, wherein the container has a non-transparent appearance.
23. The process for preparing a container according to Claim 22, wherein the container has a white appearance with a color of the container about CIE L*a*b* Color Scale values of: L* values in the range of about 41.5 through 46.0; a* values in the range of about 0.10 through 0.25; and b* values in the range of about 2.20 through 3.10.
24. A process for preparing a micro cellular preform comprising the steps of:
injection molding a micro cellular polymer preform having a non-reactive gas entrapped within the walls thereof and having a non-transparent appearance;
cooling the preform to a temperature below the polymer softening temperature; and reheating the preform to a temperature above the glass transition temperature of the polymer and below the temperature at which the increasing pressure of the micro cellular gas bubbles exceeds that of the ability of the material properties to resist and the micro cellular bubbles expand to result in a distorted preform.
injection molding a micro cellular polymer preform having a non-reactive gas entrapped within the walls thereof and having a non-transparent appearance;
cooling the preform to a temperature below the polymer softening temperature; and reheating the preform to a temperature above the glass transition temperature of the polymer and below the temperature at which the increasing pressure of the micro cellular gas bubbles exceeds that of the ability of the material properties to resist and the micro cellular bubbles expand to result in a distorted preform.
25. A container produced from a preform prepared by the process according to Claim 24 including the steps of:
blow molding the heated preform to prepare a container consisting essentially of a micro cellular foamed polymer having a non-reactive gas container within the micro cellular foam cells, wherein the container has a non-transparent appearance.
