Abstract

A prescription pharmacy bottle (12) comprises a container (20) and a label (60). The container includes a generally planar front portion (22) having a generally rectangular shape and a generally planar back portion (28) spaced from the front portion (22). The back portion (28) has a generally rectangular shape and generally faces away in an opposite direction from the front portion (22). The label (60) is secured to the container (20) bearing printed matter related to a medication and includes a front portion (64) secured on the front portion (22) of the container (20) and a back portion (66) secured on the back portion (28) of the container (20).

Claims (61)

1. A prescription pharmacy bottle comprising:
a container including:

a generally planar front portion having a generally rectangular shape; and a generally planar back portion spaced from the front portion, the back portion having a generally rectangular shape, and generally facing away in an opposite direction from the front portion; and a label secured to the container bearing printed matter related to a medication and including:

a front portion secured on the front portion of the container;
a back portion secured on the back portion of the container.
2. The pharmacy bottle of claim 1 comprising:

a pair of side portions opposite to and spaced from each other, with each side portion extending between the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container and having a generally rectangular shape, wherein the front portion of the label and the back portion of the label comprise separate, unconnected portions of the label.
3. The pharmacy bottle of claim 1 comprising:

a pair of side portions opposite to and spaced from each other, with each side portion extending between the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container and having a generally trapezoidal shape to cause the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container to extend at an angle relative to a vertical plane, wherein each side portion includes a top portion having a length less than a bottom portion so that an upper portion of the front portion of the container and an upper portion of the back portion of the container are oriented toward convergence with each other and so that a lower portion of the front portion of the container and a lower portion of the back portion of the container are oriented toward divergence from each other.
4. The pharmacy bottle of claim 1 wherein the container comprises:

a spine portion interposed between the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container, and wherein the label comprises a spine portion interposed between the front portion of the label and the back portion of the label and secured to the spine portion of the container.
5. The pharmacy bottle of claim 4 wherein the front portion, back portion, and spine portion of the label form a one-piece label that is secured onto the container via wrapping the label around the front portion, the spine portion, and the back portion of the container, respectively.

The pharmacy bottle of claim 4 wherein the front portion and the spine portion of the container are generally perpendicular to each other, and the back portion and the spine portion of the container are generally perpendicular to each other, to cause each of the front portion, the back portion, and the spine portion of the label to be readable from three different directions wherein the adjacent directions are generally perpendicular to each other.
7. The pharmacy bottle of claim 4 wherein the container comprises an opening disposed between the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container opposite to and spaced from the spine portion of the container, the opening adapted to removably receive a cap to cover the opening.
8. The pharmacy bottle of claim 7 wherein the front portion of the label and the back portion of the label include text that is oriented to be readable in an right-side-up orientation on the container when the cap is in a lower vertical position than the spine portion of the container via at least one of:

setting the cap on a support surface to cause the container to extend vertically upward away from the support surface; and holding the container manually so that the spine portion of the container is vertically elevated relative to the cap.
9. The pharmacy bottle of claim 4 wherein a spine portion of the label is interposed between the back portion of the label and the front portion of the label and comprises at least one of patient identifier and a drug identifier.
10. The pharmacy bottle of claim 1 wherein, prior to securing of the label onto the container, the front portion of the label includes a first printed matter and the back portion of the label includes a second printed matter, wherein the first printed matter has a 180 degree opposite orientation of the second printed matter.
11. The pharmacy bottle of claim 1 and further comprising a slot defined between a back portion of the container and the back portion of the label, the slot sized and shaped for removably receiving at least one of an information card and a magnifying tool in the slot.

The pharmacy bottle of claim 11 wherein the container comprises a pair of side portions opposite to and spaced from each other, with each side portion extending between the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container; and wherein the slot is defined by a space between a recess in the back portion of the container and a non-stick portion of the back portion of the label that extends over the recess, wherein the recess is generally rectangular-shaped and extends at least partially laterally across the back portion of the container with the recess having at least one outer edge adjacent one of the side portions of the container to form a first opening of the slot.

The pharmacy bottle of claim 12 wherein slot is sized, shaped, and oriented to enable the information card or the magnifying tool to protrude at least partially out of the slot laterally relative to a longitudinal axis of the container, when either of the information card or magnifying tool is fully inserted within the slot.

The pharmacy bottle of claim 12 wherein the recess extends entirely across the back portion of the container, and the at least one outer edge of the recess comprises two outer edges of the recess with each outer edge adjacent one of the opposite side portions of the container to form the first opening of the slot adjacent one of the side portions and a second opening of the slot adjacent the other of the side portions of the container.
15. The pharmacy bottle of claim 14 wherein the recess is surrounded by at least one contact portion of the back portion of the container, the contact portion being adapted to receive adhesive portions of the back portion of the label.
16. The pharmacy bottle of claim 15 wherein the at least one contact portion of the back portion of the container comprises two contact portions disposed on opposite sides of the recess.
17. The pharmacy bottle of claim 11 wherein the back portion of the label is independent of the information card and includes warning information, and the warning information on the back portion of the label is viewable independent of whether the information card is inserted into the slot.
18. A prescription pharmacy bottle comprising:
a container including:

a generally planar front portion having a generally rectangular shape; and a generally planar back portion spaced from the front portion, the back portion having a generally rectangular shape, and generally facing away in an opposite direction from the front portion; and a pair of side portions opposite to and spaced from each other, with each side portion extending between the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container, each side portion having a generally trapezoidal shape;
and a label secured to the container bearing printed matter related to a medication and including:

a front portion secured on the front portion of the container;

a back portion secured on the back portion of the container; and a slot defined between a back portion of the container and the back portion of the label, the slot sized and shaped for removably receiving, in a lateral orientation relative to a longitudinal axis of the container, at least one of an information card and a magnifying tool in the slot.
19. A prescription pharmacy bottle comprising:
a container including:

a front portion having a generally rectangular shape;

a back portion spaced from the front portion, the back portion having a generally rectangular shape, and generally facing away in an opposite direction from the front portion; and a spine portion interposed between the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container; and a label secured to the container bearing printed matter related to a medication and including:

a front portion secured on the front portion of the container;
a back portion secured on the back portion of the container a spine portion interposed between the front portion of the label and the back portion of the label and secured to the spine portion of the container, wherein the front portion, back portion, and spine portion of the label form a one-piece label that is secured onto the container via wrapping the label around the front portion, the spine portion, and the back portion of the container, respectively.
20. The pharmacy bottle of claim 19 wherein the container comprises an opening disposed opposite from the spine portion of the container, and a cap removably securable on the opening, wherein the front portion of the label and the back portion of the label include text that is oriented to be readable in a right-side-up orientation on the container when the cap is in a relatively lower position than the spine portion of the container via at least one of:

setting the cap on a support surface to cause the container to extend vertically upward away from the support surface; and holding the container manually so that the spine portion of the container is oriented relative to the cap to enable reading the label from the spine portion toward the cap.
21. The pharmacy bottle of claim 1 and further comprising:

a colored ring configured for removably securing adjacent an opening of the container, wherein the colored ring is selected from a plurality of colored rings with each colored ring comprising a different color.
22. A prescription pharmacy bottle comprising:
a container including:

a generally planar front portion having a generally rectangular shape;
a generally planar back portion spaced from the front portion, the back portion having a generally rectangular shape and generally facing away in an opposite direction from the front portion; and a pair of side portions opposite to and spaced from each other, with each side portion extending between the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container, each side portion comprising at least one of a generally rectangular shape and a generally trapezoidal shape, wherein the front portion and the back portion are configured for adhesive placement of a medication-related label on the front portion and the back portion of the container.
23. The pharmacy bottle of claim 22 wherein each side portion comprises the generally rectangular shape and the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container are generally parallel to each other.
24. The pharmacy bottle of claim 22 wherein each side portion comprises the generally trapezoidal shape to cause the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container to extend at an angle relative to a vertical plane.
25. The pharmacy bottle of claim 24 wherein each side portion includes a top portion having a length less than a bottom portion so that an upper portion of the front portion of the container and an upper portion of the back portion of the container are oriented toward convergence with each other and so that a lower portion of the front portion of the container and a lower portion of the back portion of the container are oriented toward divergence from each other.
26. The pharmacy bottle of claim 22 wherein the container comprises:

a spine portion interposed between a top portion of the front portion and the back portion, and wherein the spine portion is configured for adhesive placement of a portion of the medication-related label on the spine portion of the container.
27. The pharmacy bottle of claim 26 wherein the front portion and the spine portion of the container are generally perpendicular to each other, and the back portion and the spine portion of the container are generally perpendicular to each other.
28. The pharmacy bottle of claim 26 wherein the container comprises an opening disposed between the front portion and the back portion of the container opposite to and spaced from the spine portion of the container, the opening adapted to removably receive a cap to cover the opening.
29. The pharmacy bottle of claim 28 wherein the spine portion and the cap are configured relative to one another to cause the bottle to have a right-side-up orientation when the cap is in a lower vertical position than the spine portion of the container via at least one of:

setting the cap on a support surface to cause the container to extend vertically upward away from the support surface; and holding the container manually so that the spine portion of the container is vertically elevated relative to the cap.
30. The pharmacy bottle of claim 29 wherein the bottle, when placed in the right-side-up orientation, is configured to enable readability of the prescription-related label on both the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container.
31. The pharmacy bottle of claim 22 wherein a size and shape of the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container are generally symmetrical relative to each other and a size and shape of the side portions of the container are generally symmetrical relative to each other.
32. The pharmacy bottle of claim 22 wherein the container comprises:

a recess portion having a generally rectangular shape and extending laterally at least partially across the back portion of the container with the recess portion having at least one outer edge adjacent one of the side portions of the container; and a contact portion that generally surrounds the recess portion and is sized and shaped to receive for adhesive placement of the medication-related label on the contact portion, wherein the recess portion and the contact portion of the back portion of the container are configured relative to each other to cause a portion of the medication-related label to extend over and be spaced from the recess portion of the back portion of the container.
33. The pharmacy bottle of claim 32 wherein the recess portion extends entirely across the back portion of the container, and the at least one outer edge of the recess comprises two outer edges of the recess portion with each outer edge adjacent one of the opposite side portions of the container.
34. The pharmacy bottle of claim 22 wherein the container comprises an opening adjacent an end of the front portion of the container and of the back portion of the container wherein the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container have a width that is substantially greater than at least one of the opening of the container and a cap covering the opening of the container.
35. The pharmacy bottle of claim 22 and further comprising:

a colored ring configured for removably securing adjacent an opening of the container, wherein the colored ring is selected from a plurality of colored rings.
36. The pharmacy bottle of claim 22 wherein the container comprises:

at least one protrusion disposed on at least one of the side portions of the container.
37. The pharmacy bottle of claim 36 wherein the at least one protrusion comprises an array of protrusions.
38. The pharmacy bottle of claim 36 wherein the at least one protrusion is raised from a surface of the side portion and defines a recessed surface within the protrusion.
39. A pharmacy bottle comprising:
a container having:

a generally planar front portion having a generally rectangular shape; and a generally planar back portion spaced from the front portion, the back portion having a generally rectangular shape and generally facing away in an opposite direction from the front portion;

a pair of side portions opposite to and spaced from each other, with each side portion extending between the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container and having a generally trapezoidal shape to cause the front portion of the container and the back portion of the container to extend at an angle relative to a vertical plane;

a spine portion interposed between the front portion and the back portion, with the front portion and the spine portion of the container being generally perpendicular to each other, and the back portion and the spine portion of the container being generally perpendicular to each other; and an opening disposed between the front portion and the back portion of the container opposite to and spaced from the spine portion of the container, the opening adapted to removably receive a cap to cover the opening, wherein the front portion, the back portion, and the spine portion of the container are configured for adhesive placement of a medication-related label on the front portion, the back portion, and the spine portion of the container.
40. A pharmacy bottle comprising:

a container configured to receive a medication and having an opening; and a colored ring removably securable on the container adjacent the opening, the colored ring selectable from a plurality of colored rings with each colored ring comprising a different color.
41. The pharmacy bottle of claim 40 wherein the colored ring is made of a resilient, elastomeric material enabling the colored ring to be selectively slipped on and off the opening of the container, and wherein each different color comprises at least one of a family member identification and a medication-type identification.
42. A label for a prescription pharmacy bottle, the label comprising:
a first portion adapted for securing to a front portion of a bottle;

a second portion adapted for securing to back portion of a bottle; and a printed information on the label relating to a medication, the printed information including:

a first type of information including prescription-related information including, but not limited to, a drug identifier and a patient identifier;

a second type of information including at least one of a drug identifier and a patient identifier; and a third type of information including warning information, wherein the first type of information is always positioned in the first portion of the label and the third type of information is always positioned on the second portion of the label, and wherein the first type of information is printed at a 180 degree opposite orientation of the second type and third type of information.
43. The label of claim 42 wherein the label comprises:

a third portion interposed between the first portion of the label and the second portion of the label, wherein the second type of information is always positioned on the third portion of the label.
44. The label of claim 43 wherein the first portion, second portion, and third portion of the label form a one-piece label that is configured to be secured onto the container via wrapping the label around a front portion, a back portion, and a spine portion of the bottle, respectively, wherein the spine portion of the bottle is generally perpendicular to each of a front portion of the bottle and a back portion of the bottle.
45. The label of claim 43 wherein label is printed in one-piece and the first portion of the label is separable from the second portion and the third portion of the label so that the first portion of the label is securable on the front portion of the bottle and the second portion of the label and the third portion of the label are securable on the back portion of the bottle.
46. The label of claim 42 wherein the label comprises an adhesively backed surface extending along the entire label except for a non-stick portion positioned along the second portion of the label, wherein the non-stick portion is generally rectangularly shaped and extends from an edge of the second portion of the label at least partially across an entire width of the second portion of the label.
47. The label of claim 46 wherein the non-stick portion of the label extends across an entire width of the back portion of the label.
48. The label of claim 46 wherein the non-stick portion of the label is sized, shaped, and oriented for placement to extend over a recess portion of a back portion of a bottle to enable formation of a slot between the non-stick portion of the label and the recess portion of the back portion of the bottle.
49. The label of claim 42 wherein the first type of information includes primary information and secondary information, wherein the secondary information includes at least one of a pharmacy identifier, a physician identifier, and the primary information is printed in a first font that is larger, and bolder than a second font of the secondary information, and wherein the primary information is spaced from the secondary information.
50. The label of claim 49 wherein the warning information of the third type of information comprises at least one warning relating to use of the medication associated with the label, and the at least one warning is oriented horizontally and each at least one warning includes at least one of a symbol, icon, or pictogram signaling a non-textual indication of a nature of the at least one warning.
51. A label system for a processing a pharmacy prescription, the label system comprising:

a label portion including at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label, a information privacy notice label, and a patient acknowledgement label; and a non-label plain paper portion releasably anchored to the label portion, and including at least one of a patient receipt, a patient information card, and a drug monograph, wherein the non-label plain paper portion is configured to be separated from the label portion to enable the patient information card to be removably secured to a prescription pharmacy bottle in cooperation with the at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label.
52. The label system of claim 51 wherein the at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label comprises a first-sized prescription pharmacy bottle label and a second-sized prescription pharmacy bottle label that is substantially identical to the first-sized prescription pharmacy bottle label, except being smaller in size than the first-sized prescription pharmacy bottle label.
53. The label system of claim 51 wherein the at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label comprises an adhesively backed surface extending along the entire at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label except for a non-stick portion positioned along the second portion of the at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label, wherein the non-stick portion is generally rectangularly shaped and extends from a side edge of the at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label at least partially across an entire width of the at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label.
54. The label system of claim 51 wherein the at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label comprises a first portion, a second portion, and a third portion, wherein the first portion has a first right-side-up reading orientation and the second portion has a second right-side-up reading orientation that has a 180 degree opposite orientation relative to the first right-side-up reading orientation.

The label system of claim 54 wherein the at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label is configured for application to a pharmacy bottle, the pharmacy bottle including a first information viewing surface, a second information viewing surface and a third information viewing surface, wherein the first information viewing surface is generally perpendicular to the second information viewing surface and the second information viewing surface is generally perpendicular to the third information viewing surface, with the second information viewing surface interposed between the first and third information viewing surfaces, and the first portion of the at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label is configured for application to the first information viewing surface of the bottle, the second portion of the at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label is configured for application to the second information viewing surface of the bottle, and the third portion of the at least one prescription pharmacy bottle label is configured for application to the third information viewing surface of the bottle.
56. A control monitor for processing a pharmacy prescription label, the control monitor comprising:

general module for generating a label system including at least one label portion and at least one plain paper portion;
57 a label module configured for controlling a number, type, and orientation of a plurality of components of the at least one label portion on the label system, including controlling printing of a prescription pharmacy bottle label;

a plain paper module configured for controlling a number, type, orientation of a plurality of components of the at least one plain paper portion on the label system; and a data module for controlling entry, storage, retrieval, and printing of data relating to printed matter on the at least one label portion and the at least one plain paper portion of the label system, wherein the control monitor is stored within a memory.

57. The control monitor of claim 56 wherein the general module controls a plurality of parameters affecting at least one of a single component of the label system or a group of components of the label system, the plurality of parameters including at least one of:
a size parameter;

a shape parameter;

a location parameter;

an orientation parameter;
a non-stick parameter;

a plain paper parameter;
a separation parameter;
a border parameter;

an anchor parameter; and a side parameter.
58 58. The control monitor of claim 56 wherein the general module controls a plurality of parameters affecting at least one of a single component of the label system or a group of components of the label system, the plurality of parameters including at least one of:
a font color parameter;

a font size parameter;
a font type parameter;
a symbol parameter;

a font orientation parameter; and a spacing-border parameter.
59. The control monitor of claim 56 wherein the plain paper module includes a plurality of parameters including at least one of:

a receipt parameter;

an information card parameter; and a monograph parameter.
60. The control monitor of claim 56 wherein the label module includes a plurality of parameters including at least one of:

a large label parameter;
a small label parameter;

a label front portion parameter;
a label back portion parameter;

a label spine portion parameter;
a bottle type parameter;

an acknowledgement label parameter;
a notice label parameter;

a refill label parameter;
a unit-of-use parameter;

a prescription tag parameter; and a retail bag label parameter.
61. The control monitor of claim 56 wherein the data module includes a plurality of parameter relating to the data and including at least one of:

a patient parameter;
a drug parameter;

a usage parameter;
a dosage parameter;
a warning parameter;
a physician parameter;

a retail vendor parameter; and a regulation parameter.
