ABSTRACT
A steel soldier of increased strength and rigidity for supporting concrete formwork comprises a pair of steel beam elements connected in laterally spaced opposite parallel relation by a tie plate at each end and is characterised in that each beam element has a web with lateral extensions which enter within and are supportively attached to separately formed hollow profile chord plates
Description
12~40SS
Thls Inventlon relates to an improved steel soldler for supportlng concrete formwork and represents an Improvement or modlflcatlon of the steel soldler whlch Is dlsclosed In Brltlsh Patent Speclflcatlon No. 15511~4.
That steel soldler comprlsed a palr of steel beam ele-ments connected In laterally spaced opposlte parallel relatlon by a tle plate at each end, each beam element having the form of a f o 1 ded steel plate wlth a flat web portlon extendlng Into a palr of substantlally tubular proflle chords whlch are of substan-tlalIy symmetrlcal conflguratlon relatlve to the plane of the web. The chords may be of clrcular, oval, rectangular or other sy~metrlcal geometrlc conflguratlon although a trlangular conflg-uratlon was preferred.
In accordance wlth the present Inventlon a stee,l 501-dler comprlses, as prevlouslY, a palr of s~eel beam elemcnts con-nected In laterally spaced opposlte parallel relatlon by ~ tle plate at each end but Is characterl~ed In that each beam element has a web wlth lateral extenslons whlch enter wlthln and are sup-portlvely attached to separately formed asymmetrlcal hollow pro-flle chord plates. Each chord plate, In conJunctlon wlth one face of a sald lateral web extenslon, deflnes a slngle chord space of substantially trlangular cross-sectlon and, on the oppo-slte slde of each lateral web extenslon termlnates In a slngleflange whlch Is spaced from and Parallel to the extenslon. Sult-ably, each chord Plate Is attached by weldlng to a slde edge of a web end also to one face of the same web.
In one embodIment of the present Inventlon the chord plates are posltloned so that the defIned spaces of substantlally trlangular cross-sectlon extend towards each other.
In a partlcular aspect thereof the present Inventlon 3~ provldes a soldler comprlslng a palr of beam elements in substan-tlally laterally spaced, opposlte parallel relatlon and connected to a tle plate at each end, each beam element comprlslng: a web wlth a palr of extenslons extendlng laterally therefrom, each of whlch has opposln~ flrst and second faces; and a palr of sepa-rately-formed chord plates, the proflle of each belng substan-tlally V-shaped, thereby de~lnlng two substantialiy flat portlons wlth correspondlng free ends; whereas each la~eral extenslon is supportlvely attached to one of the substantially flat portlons of a chord plate, wlth the free end of that portlon termlnatlng In a flange whlch Is spaced from and parallel to the flrst face of the extenslon; and whereas the other substantlally flat por-tlon of each chord plate extends so that Its free end contacts, and Is supportlvely attached to, the second face of the respec-tIve extenslon so as to defIne a closed space of substantlally trlangular cross-sectlon. Sultab~y, the chord Plates arle attached to the extenslons by weldlng. Pre~erably, adJacent chord plates on the sPaced beam elements are posltloned such that the deflned spaces of substantlally trlangular cross~sectlon ex~end ~owar~ one another.
A partlcular and at present preferred embodlment of the Inventlon Is Illustrated In the accompanylng drawlng, In whlch:-` ~254al55 Fig. 1 is an end view of one bearrl element of a steel soldier; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the complete steel soldier.
Referring firstly to Fig. 1~ the beam elernent there shown comprises a folded steel p1ate having a flat web 1 formed with a series of large lipped openings la along its length, one only of such openings being visible.
The web 1 is laterally extended so as to enter and give support to a pair of hollow profile chord plates 2 of somewhat 1~ channel shaped configuration which are attached to the web by welding at locations a and b respectively along the web edge and one web face.
Fig. 2 shows how the complete soldier is comprised af two soldiers as above described mounted in parallel opposite facing spaced relation and connected at top and bottom by rectangular tie plates 3 of which one only is visible.

3. A soldier as claimed in claim 1 wherein the chord plates are positioned so that the defined spaces of substantially triangular cross-section extend towards each other.
4. A soldier comprising a pair of beam elements in substantially laterally spaced, opposite parallel relation and connected to a tie plate at each end, each beam element compris-ing: a web with a pair of extensions extending laterally there-from, each of which has opposing first and second faces; and a pair of separately-formed chord plates, the profile of each being substantially V-shaped, thereby defining two substantially flat portions with corresponding free ends; whereas each lateral extension is supportively attached to one of the substantially flat portions of a chord plate, with the free end of that portion terminating in a flange which is spaced from and parallel to the first face of the extension; and whereas the other substantially flat portion of each chord plate extends so that its free end contacts, and is supportively attached to, the second face of the respective extension so as to define a closed space of substan-tially triangular cross-section.
