Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A protective sheet and mattress cover of unitary construc-tion to protect a bed from soiling. The cover has a central por-tion having absorbent/barrier properties, and having a lower bar-rier layer, an intermediate high absorbency layer, and an upper flannelette layer. All layers are secured together by stitching and side flaps extend from opposite sides of the central portion with the flaps being tucked beneath the mattress to retain the cover in position.
Description
The present invention relates to a protective cover for use with a bed to prevent soilage of underlying bed linen and mattress.
More specifically, the present invention relates to a protective cover for a bed sheet and mattress comprising a substan-tially rectangular absorbent/barrier portion having a lower barrier layer, an intermediate absorbent layer and an upper layer of bed sheet material with all layers being secured together by stitching, the absorbent barrier portion being of a size to cover an area of the bed sheet and mattress most susceptible to soilage, and rectangular flaps of bed sheet material extending outwardly from opposite side edges of the absorbent/barrier portion, the flaps being of a size to be tucked beneath the mattress on opposite sides to retain the cover in position.
DISCUSSION OF PRIOR ART
It is known to place a sheet of moisture barrier material on a bed to minimize soilage due to human discharge, and this techn-ue is used in hospitals and nursing homes for incontinent individ-uals, and in the home for infants and small children and other in-dividuals who do not have complete control of their body functions.
However, the protective cover used is often simply asheet of rubber or other impervious material which is often covered with a sheet of cotton or the like to avoid the unpleasant and cold feel of the impervious barrier material. To our knowledge, these protective coverings are always individual sheets which are individually positioned on the bed, and with this arrangement, any movement of the patient results in a rumpling and displacement of the sheets, causing uncomfortable bumps and reducing the ef-fectiveness of the cover in preventing soilage on the bed. These known procedures are also somewhat time-consuming for the sheets . --1-- ~

have to be individually laid and smoothed, and after soilage has occurred individual washings and cleaning are required.

-lA-THE PRESENT INVENTION
The purpose of the present invention is to avoid the disadvantages of these known techniques and to provide a protect-ive sheet and mattress covering having a lower barrier layer, and intermediate high-absorbent layer, and an upper soft and comfort-able layer all of which are secured together by stitching to pro-vide a unitary assembly, and also to provide a protective cover having oppositely extending flaps which are tucked beneath oppos-ite sides of the mattress to hold the cover in desired position even with continual patient movement.
The advantages of the present invention may be summar-ized as follows:
1. The flaps which are tucked beneath opposite sides of the mattress retain the protective cover in position to achieve maximum soilage prevention and to keep the cover as smooth and flat as possible for maximum comfort.

The advantages of the present invention may be summar-ized as follows:
1. The flaps which are tucked beneath opposite sides of the mattress retain the protective cover in position to achieve maximum soilage prevention and to keep the cover as smooth and flat as possible for maximum comfort.
2. The laundering of underlying sheets and other mat-tress covering is reduced to a minimum for the protective cover of the invention provides for maximum soilage prevention.
3. The unitary construction of the protective cover simplifies positioning and removal and the high absorbency layer utilized in the cover provides for maximum absorption.
4. The use of the present cover minimizes the time re-quired by attendants for when soiled it need simply be replaced and it is not necessary to remake the bed completely by using clean sheets each time soilage occurs. This is an extremely important aspect of the invention due to soaring hospitalization costs which are being met to some degree by staff reduction.
5. Soilage is confined to one single or unitary article ~`30 thus minimizing handling.
6. The components used in the construction of the pre-sent cover are all of a type which can be washed with high temp-erature water, and so the cover is well suited for cleaning boilers used in hospital linen laundering facilities.
7. The present cover is also convenient for patient manipulation, as the patient can be rolled by lifting one side of the cover. The patient may even be lifted using the present cover.
These purposes and advantages are attained by the present invention which specifically provides a protective sheet and mat-tress cover of unitary construction, comprising a central portion having absorbent/barrier properties and having a lower barrier layer, an intermediate high-absorbency layer, and an upper flannel-ette layer, all layers being secured together by stitching, and side flaps extending from opposite sides of the central portion, the side flaps being tucked beneath the mattress to retain the cover in pos-ition.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
The present invention will be more fully understood with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 shows a bed in perspective view having the pro-tective cover of the invention in position thereon;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken generally along line 2-2 of Figure l; and Figure 3 is an enlarged view of the left-hand portion of the view as shown in Figure 2.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
_ Reference will now be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts.
A bed indicated generally by numeral 2 in Figure 1 is shown as having a mattress covered by sheet 4. The mattress is not ~ -3-numbered in Figure 1, but is shown at 5 in Figures 2 and 3.
The inventive protective cover is shown generally by numeral 6. The cover has a central area 8 which provides an absor-.J., '. ~

ption/barrier combination, and has laterally extending flaps 10 which are secured to the central portion, and are of a length to extend beneath the mattress as shown in Figures 1 and 2 to hold the cover 6 in desired position.
The size of the cover will be sufficient to cover that portion of the bed most susceptible to soilage, and while the pro-tective cover could be of a size to completely cover the top of the mattress, this would involve unnecessary excess material, and make handling and washing somewhat more difficult. Preferably, the cover is of a size to cover the bed only in the portion of the bed most susceptible to soilage.
The preferred construction of the protective cover is illustrated in sectional view in Figures 2 and 3.
The lowermost layer 12 of the central area is a barrier layer, and in preferred construction, this layer is a woven nylon layer which has been impregnated to render it impervious to the passage of moisture. Suitable impregnated moisture-impervious woven nylon sheet material well suited for use as the barrier layer is manufactured by Beauknit Company in Tennessee. The impregnating material used by the Beauknit Company is not known. Other suitable barrier sheeting having high temperature water washing capabilities can, of course, be used.
The intermediate layer 14 is preferably of high-absorbent non-woven viscous material which has excellent moisture absorbent qualities, and which is easy to clean and is durable.
The upper layer 16 is preferably of flannelette, which is comfortable and warm in use, and which has a long life.
The three layers are stitched together as shown at 18 around their four edges, and also preferably stitching 20 extends across and diagonally of the surface as shown in Figure 1.
.
~L~L~ ~L~ ~3 The flaps 10 are secured to the protective cover by suit-able stitching 18 and whip stitching or edging 22, and these flaps are adapted to be tucked beneath the mattress as shown to hold the cover in desired position.
The cover can be of any desired size, depending of course upon the size of the bed with which the cover is to be used, but in a typical single size hospital bed, the protective cover may be 36 - 39 inches wide (across the bed) and about 36 inches long, and the side flaps will each extend about 18 inches to provide for secured positioning beneath the mattress.
The flaps can be of any suitable material such as 50/50 sheeting.
