Description
'11~$~6~
This invention relates to a tray and more particularly to a food tray which is removably attachable to the door of an automobile.
There are various receptacles on the market which are attachable to the interiors of automobiles to receive food or other items. Such receptacles usually include a rigid arm which is adapted to be fixed -to an interior surface of the automobile such as the dashboard or a door. For use with food served to the occupants of the vehicle, such devices are not conveniently loca-ted because they would be obstructions. For this reason detachable trays have been developed which may be hooked onto car doors but such trays are either cumbersome or unstable or both.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved detachable food tray for mounting in an automobile.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a detachable food tray for secure attachment to an automoblle door and adjustable for different door thicknesses for secure attachment thereto.
In its broadest aspect the invention consists of a detachable tray for mounting on the door of an auto-mobile, comprising a main body having a circumferential wall defining a well for receiving food, at least a portion of the wall being planar with a straight upper rim portion and having a flange extending upwardly therefrom, the flange having a plurality of grooves oriented parallel to said straight upper rim portion whereby the flange is adjustably bendable in an arc laterally outwardly -therefrom, the flange terminating in a lip insertable into the window slot of a car door.
An example embodiment of the invention is shown ti~
in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a detachable tray mounted on the door of an automobile;
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the tray of Figure l; and Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the tray mounted on a car door of a different thickness.
The embodiment shown in the drawings consists of a tray 10 comprising a main body 12 having a main body defining a rectangular well or compartment 14 and a circular well or compartment 16. In the particular configuration shown in the drawings well 14 is useful for holding boxed food ]4a or sandwiches while well 16 is useful for holding a drinking cup 16a or a bottle.
3ack wall 18 of tray 10 is planar with a straight upper rim portion and extends upwardly to form a flap 20 which is curved rearwardly to terminate in a downwardly directed flange 22. A plurality of grooves 24 are located in the back surface of flap 20 parallel to the straight upper rim portion of wall 18, intermediate wall 18 and flange 22.
Tray lO is preferably made of form retaining plastic material and it may be injection molded or vacuum formed. The plastic is deformable at grooves 24 to enable the curvature of flap 20 to be adjusted manually.
Tray lO may be mounted on the door 26 of an automobile, in the manner shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, by inserting flange 22 into window slot 28 of the car door and allowing the back of flap 20 to rest against shoulder 30 of the door. The adjustable curvature of flap 20 allows the flap to rest flush against shoulder 30, thus providing stability to the device when in use.
..
Preferably grooves 24 are located in the rear face of flap 20 and the junction of the flap with the upper rim of main body portion 10 is preferably grooved also, suitably in the front face of the flap. The thickness of flange 22 is gauged to fit into sl.ot 28 of car door 30 when the window is closed or open.
