Abstract

"PROCESSO DE AUMENTAR A CAPACIDADE EM UM SISTEMA DE COMUNICAçõES CELULAR E CONTROLADOR QUE COORDENA O ESTABELECIMENTO DE UM CANAL DE TRáFEGO DE PRIMEIRA TAXA PARA UMA COMUNICAçãO COM UMA ESTAçãO MóVEL QUE é SERVIDA POR UMA ESTAçãO BASE, EM UM SISTEMA DE COMUNICAçõES CELULAR". OF INCREASING CAPACITY IN A CELLULAR COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND CONTROLLER THAT COORDINATES THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A FIRST RATE TRAFFIC CHANNEL FOR COMMUNICATION WITH A MOBILE STATION THAT IS SERVED BY A BASE STATION, IN A COMMUNIC SYSTEM. The present invention dynamically increases the capacity of a cellular radio communications system to satisfy high temporary traffic demands in an efficient and economical manner. The current traffic load in a specific base station cell area is determined (14). If the determined traffic load exceeds a threshold value (16), a higher rate traffic channel through which a dual rate mobile station is communicating is transferred to a lower rate traffic channel available in that cell area available in that cell area (18). A list is maintained for those dual rate mobile stations currently allocated to the highest rate traffic channels. Before proceeding with the transfer from the higher rate traffic channel to the lower rate traffic channel, it is determined whether a transfer is allowed. If so, the intra-cell transfer is preferably made to a traffic channel that is currently supporting another lower rate call. If not, any available lower rate traffic channel is allocated: In the establishment of the call, if the current traffic load in the cell area exceeds the threshold value, a call request involving a double rate mobile station is allocated one lowest rate traffic channel (20). If the traffic load in the cell area decreases, a call initially established or subsequently transferred to a lower rate channel due to the high traffic load can optionally be transferred to a higher rate channel (17).
