A presente invenção é sílica géis hidrofóbicas, tendo área de superfície reduzida e um método para a sua preparação. O método compreende três etapas, onde na primeira etapa uma mistura compreendendo um hidrossol de sílica e uma sílica coloidal é formada. Na segunda etapa, a mistura é tratada por calor, na presença de um ácido mineral forte, em um pH menor do que cerca de 1, para formar um hidrogel de sílica tendo, incorporado no mesmo, a sílica coloidal. Na terceira etapa, o hidrogel de sílica é contatado com um composto de organossilício, na presença de uma quantidade catalítica de um ácido forte, para tornar hidrofóbico o hidrogel de sílica, desse modo formando uma sílica gel hidrofóbica tendo uma área de superfície dentro de uma faixa de cerca de 100 m^ 2^/g a 450 m^ 2^/g, conforme medida no estado seco. Em um método preferido, a sílica gel hidrofóbica é contatada com uma quantidade suficiente de um solvente orgânico imiscível com a água, para converter o hidrogel de sílica hidrofóbico em um organosílica gel hidrofóbica.Invention Patent: <B> SILICALLY HYDROPHOBIC GELS WITH REDUCED SURFACE AREA "<D>. The present invention is hydrophobic silica gels, having reduced surface area and a method for their preparation. The method comprises three steps, where in the first step a mixture comprising a silica hydrosol and a colloidal silica is formed. In the second step, the mixture is heat treated, in the presence of a strong mineral acid, at a pH less than about 1, to form a silica hydrogel having colloidal silica incorporated in it. In the third stage, the silica hydrogel is contacted with an organosilicon compound, in the presence of a catalytic amount of a strong acid, to make the silica hydrogel hydrophobic, thereby forming a silica hydrophobic gel having a surface area within a range of about 100 m ^ 2 ^ / g to 450 m ^ 2 ^ / g, as measured in the dry state. In a preferred method, hydrophobic silica gel is c treated with a sufficient amount of a water-immiscible organic solvent to convert the hydrophobic silica hydrogel into a hydrophobic organosilica gel.
