Abstract

A multi-stage, low power, high dynamic range variable gain amplifier (100) comprises a cascading power stage (120) with one or more current amplifier stages (160A, 160B), so the gain of each stage (120) can be independently controlled. The power stage (120) can be constituted by a variable transcoductance amplifier (227), using degeneration of variable emitter. The current amplifier (160A, 160B) can consist of a Darlington differential amplifier (510) coupled to a cascade differential amplifier (520). The transcoductance amplifier (227) converts a supply voltage signal to a current signal. The variable gain amplifier (100) is designed for efficient low power operation.
