The method includes receiving data indicating geographic features of an obstruction, lateral distance from an aircraft's geographical feature, aircraft height and speed, calculating a projected height of the aircraft at the obstruction site using data, generating a resulting signal, and displaying a colored indication on a display screen based on the resulting signal. The device includes signal records of instruments that measure the height, speed, and location of an aircraft, as well as a record for an instrument that provides information about the geographical characteristics of the terrain surrounding the aircraft. The apparatus includes a means of employing signals to calculate an aircraft's effective height from the ground, and a screen monitor for graphically displaying the calculation results.
