Hypochlorite bleaches, if adjusted to an appropriate pH, can maintain substantial disinfectant capacity while not discoloring dyes that would otherwise be sensitive to oxidation. In the method of the invention, the disinfectant solution adjusted to a pH less than about 7, containing a dye, can maintain a stable dye solution for a period longer than the time required to exhaust 90% or more of the OC in the solution. This gives an indication of the existence of the active disinfectant in the sanitization stage based on the presence of color in the aqueous solution.
