Abstract

Process for taking samples or measuring properties at certain depths in a melt. The operation is automated and comprises the following stages. (a) Immersing the sampler or measuring device at a fixed rate into a melt contained within eg. a flanged retort, a ladle, a casting channel or an ingot mould. (b) Stopping the sampler at a predetermined depth. (c) Maintaining the sampler at this depth for a desired period of time. (d) Removing the sampler from the melt. Human error is eliminated and sampling becomes controlled and reproducable.
