Diaphragm for cells for electrolysis of aq. alkali metal halide solns. contains 1-10% wt. iron and/or copper or their oxides in a finely divided state, in homogeneous dispersion in the mass of the diaphgram. The diaphragm enables caustic alkali to be obtd. directly with a reduced chlorate content, thus avoiding costly purification.
