PETTY PATENT SPECIFICATION FOR THE INVENTION ENTITLED: "A BUILDING SUB-FLOOR DRAINAGE SYSTEM" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:
TITLE
"A BUILDING SUB-FLOOR DRAINAGE SYSTEM" The present invention relates to a building sub-floor drainage system for encouraging moisture away from a building and for discouraging the presence of termites and fungi adjacent the building It is common for moisture to accumulate in a sub-floor region adjacent a building, such moisture originating from rain or from a broken sub-floor water pipe of the building. As a result of this moisture, the condition of the soil directly below the building is such as to encourage the presence of termites and fungi in the soil, the io presence of termites and fungi as well as the moisture in the soil having a deleterious "effect on the building.
The present invention seeks, among other things, to provide a building sub-floor drainage system which overcomes the above mentioned problem.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a sub-floor drainage system 15 for a building, said system including a layer of glass particles disposed, in use, intermediate a building and the ground, the said glass particles being of a size such that capillary action is induced in the layer.
Preferably each of the glass particles is substantially spherical in shape.
Alternatively, the glass particles may be irregular in shape.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only.
In an embodiment of the present invention, a sub-floor drainage system is provided which includes a layer of glass particles disposed intermediate a building and the ground.
3 The layer is disposed in a recess formed in the ground and locates between the recess and the building. The arrangement is such that the layer covers internal walls of the recess, and is contiguous with a lower horizontal surface of the building and with lower portions of vertical walls of the building up to ground level. In this way, a surface of the layer at ground level intermediate the building and the ground is exposed and moisture emanating from the layer is free to evaporate from the exposed surface to atmosphere. In addition, light is free to enter the layer through the exposed surface.
The glass particles are substantially spherical in shape, although it will be appreciated :that the shape of the glass particles may alternatively be irregular. The size of the particles is such that at least one dimension of the particles is between approximately 2mm and approximately 4mm. With particles within this range, capillary action is induced in the layer of glass particles, such capillary action acting to draw liquid from a sub-floor region of high liquid concentration to a sub-floor region of low liquid 015 concentration.
will be appreciated that, in use, the layer of glass particles serves to draw moisture from a region of high moisture concentration adjacent the building to a region of low moisture concentration adjacent the atmosphere where evaporation occurs.
It will also be appreciated that by providing a layer of glass particles a nutrient free zone is provided intermediate the building and the ground which discourages intrusion of nutrient seeking organisms such as termites or fungi.
It will also be appreciated that the transparency of the glass material serves to further discourage intrusion of organisms such as termites since termites are sensitive to light.
Modifications and variations as would be apparent to a skilled addressee are deemed to be within the scope of the present invention.

1. A sub-floor drainage system for a building, said system including a layer of glass particles disposed, in use, intermediate a building and the ground, said glass particles being of a size such that capillary action is induced in the layer.
