One particular application of the filter of the present invention relates to its use in connection with drains on industrial sites such as metal yards and the like. It will be convenient to hereinafter describe the invention with reference to this particular application however, it is to be understood that this is not to be taken as a limitation as to the scope of the invention. It will be readily appreciated that the filter of the present invention could be used in other applications or sites such as for example, carparks, plastics manufacturing plants, and the like.
The discharge of potentially hazardous materials into storm water drains has become a serious environmental problem. Regulatory authorities have required in recent years more rigid control of runoff from industrial sites to the storm water drain.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved filter for drains which 15 is relatively simple in construction and easy to maintain.
The filter of the present invention is particularly suitable for use with a drain comprising a discharge channel having a drain opening through which the drainage fluid passes from the site to the discharge channel. The discharge channel is usually disposed in 20 the ground or some other surface to be drained and may have a grate which covers the drain opening. The grate may be disposed in a recess in the ground or surface adjacent the drain opening.
According to the present invention there is provided a storm water drainage filter suitable for use in a stormwater drain, the drain including a discharge channel opening through which drainage fluid passes, the filter including a main body having a support base through which drainage fluid can pass, and when the drainage filter is in use is disposed within the discharge channel at least one filter medium adjacent the support base, and a fluid flow controller disposed in spaced relation to and upstream of the said filter medium with respect to the direction of flow of drainage fluid through the filter, said fluid flow controller 3 0 being, operable to control the flow rate of fluid to the, filter medium.

y i K r7~ -2- The drainage filter may include a further filter medium upstream of first mentioned filter medium, the latter mentioned filter medium being arranged to collect coarser material than the first mentioned filter medium.
The main body may be in the form of a receptacle having a side wall with the support base at one end thereof. A mounting flange may be provided at the end of the side wall of the main body remote from the support base. The main body may be formed of a mesh material with the holes at least in the support base being sufficient not to substantially inhibit the flow of drainage fluid therethrough. The first mentioned filter medium may comprise a needle felt type material which is arranged to rest on the support 10 base of the main body. The second mentioned filter medium may be in the form of a mesh in which the holes or perforations therein are dimensioned to inhibit the passage by the first mentioned filter medium. In one form the mesh may be arranged to rest on top of the material forming the first mentioned filter medium.
t•" The drainage filter may further include a locating member for locating the filter medium(s) adjacent the support base, the locating member defining a collecting chamber between the inlet to the filter and the or each filter medium. Preferably the locating means comprises a mesh basket which is disposed within the main body receptacle so as to retain the screening medium(s) against the support base.
Preferably the flow controller includes a screen disposed at the end of the side wall of the main body remote from the support base, the screen preferably being formed of a metal mesh with the perforations being such that the flow of drainage fluid to the filter is limited.
In one preferred embodiment, there is further provided an overflow assembly including a by-pass conduit which permits drainage fluid upstream of the support base to pass therethrough. The by-pass conduit may include a generally upright tube which has one end adjacent to or extending through the support base and the other end being spaced from the support base in the direction of the fluid flow controller. The tube may be surrounded by an annular shaped core of a filter medium. Preferably the core is disposed p:\wpdocs\dysspeie\drain\pro !1 -3within a support ring. In one preferred form a deflector may be provided above the other end of the tube.
In another form the overflow assembly further includes a cover having a chamber therein the cover being adapted to overlie the conduit so that the conduit is disposed within the chamber. The cover may have apertures in the wall thereof through which drainage fluid can pass when the filter blocks. In this particular form the second mentioned filter medium may include a mesh sheet having folds therein the sheet being arranged so as to overlie the cover with its sides sloping downwardly towards opposite sides of the support base.
10 Preferably, the cross-sectional dimension of the main body is substantially the !same as the cross-sectional dimension of the discharge channel of the drain with which it is to be used. This may for example, be square, rectangular, circular or any other shape. In the operative position the main body of the filter is disposed within the discharge channel with the mounting flange resting in the recess and being held in place 6:0 15 by the grate of the drain. L-shaped metal plates may be arranged to overlie the mounting flange of the main body to assist in ensuring that the main body can be supported within the drainage channel.
,The first mentioned screening medium may comprise a material such as a needle S felt material which is arranged to rest on the support base of the main body. This screening medium is adapted to collect liquid waste such as oil and fine particles such as fine metal particles. An example of suitable materials include homopolymer acrylics or copolymers acrylics.
The further mentioned filter medium is preferably in the form of a metal sheet or mesh in which the holes or perforations therein are dimensioned to inhibit their passage through the sheet of particulate matter of a selected size, preferably larger than the material filtered by the first screening mechanism.
The locating means may be in the form of a basket preferably made of metal mesh which can be disposed within the main body receptacle so as to hold the screening I p:\wpdocs\dys\specie\drain\pro V 4 4 Vt (914

C S medium(s) against the support base. Preferably the basket defines a space between the upper part of the filter body and the screening mediums enabling discharge fluid to collect therein prior to being filtered.
Preferred embodiments of the invention will hereinafter be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is schematic side elevation of one embodiment of drainage filter according to the invention shown in the mounted position within a drain; Figure 2 is schematic sectional side elevation of the drainage filter shown in Figure 1; 10 Figure 3 is an exploded view of the drainage filter as shown in Figures 1 and 2; and Figure 4 is schematic sectional side elevation of another embodiment of drainage filter according to the present invention.
Figure 5 is a schematic sectional side elevation of yet another embodiment of 15 drainage filter according to the invention.
Figure 6 is an exploded view of the filter shown in Figure 5 with parts of the filter removed for the sake of clarity.
Figure 7 is a schematic view of the drainage filter of Figure 5 showing how it operates under normal conditions.
Figure 8 is a similar view to that of Figure 7 showing how it operates when it is blocked; and Figure 9 is a plan view of a flow controller for use in the filter device of the invention.
p:\wpdocs\dys\specie\dr in~pro Referring to Figures 1 to 4 of the drawings, there is shown a drainage filter generally indicated at 10 disposed within a drain comprising a discharge channel 2 formed within the ground having an opening 4 with a grate 6 covering the opening. The grate 6 is located within a recess in the ground so that it sets generally flush with the ground.
The drainage filter 10 comprises a main body 11 in the form of a metal receptacle or basket 12 having a side wall 13 and a base wall 14 defining a support base. A mounting flange 15 is disposed at the upper edge of wall 13 and is adapted to be positioned in the recess so as to be sandwiched between the recess and the grate 6 to thereby retain it in position within the discharge channel 2.
A flow controller 18 in the form of a metal screen 19 is disposed adjacent the top Si of the main body 11. The flow controller screen has perforations 17 therein which are sized so as to limit the flow into the drainage channel. The perforations or holes may be of different sizes as shown in Figure 9 A first filter medium 20 in the form of an absorbing and filtering material. is provided for collecting fine metals or other particulate matter as well as oil and the like.
The material is disposed adjacent the base wall 14 and a second filter medium 24 in the form of a metal mesh overlies the first filter medium S .A locating member 26 in the form of a receptacle 27 having a bottom wall 28 and side wall 29, fits within the receptacle 12 of the main body so as to locate the filter mediums 20 and 24 against the base wall or support base 14. The locating member forms a collecting vessel for larger particles or lumps of material.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 4 there is further provided an overflow assembly 40 includes an overflow pipe 30 surrounded by a filter element 31 having slots 32 therein. Deflection plates 34 and 33 inhibit direct flow of drainage fluid into the overflow pipe. Thus, if filter mediums 20 and 24 become clogged the drainage fluid can pass into the overflow pipe and into the drain.
p:\wpdocs\dys\spccie\drain\pro -6- A further embodiment of the present invention is described with reference to Figures 5 to 8. Where possible like reference numerals have been used to identify like parts described with reference to Figures 1 to 4.
The drainage filter 10 in this embodiment comprises a main body 11 having a support base wall 14 and side walls 13. A mounting flange 15 is provided at the top of the side wall as is the case for the firstmentioned embodiment.

10 The drainage filter includes an overflow assembly 40 which comprises an overflow I pipe or conduit 30 which has filter material 31 surrounding the conduit 30, the filter ri material being disposed within a support ring 35. The assembly further includes a cover S, 36 having a top wall 37 and skirt section 38. The cover defines an internal chamber 39 into which the conduit 30 is located. Slots 41 are provided in the skirt section 38 for the passage of drainage fluid therethrough.
a A second filter medium 24 in the form of a mesh overlies the cover and is inclined downwardly towards the sides of the main body. This filter medium 24 has folds therein as best seen in Figure Figure 7 shows the drainage filter in its normal operating conditions. Figure 8 shows the drainage filter operating when the support base has been blocked. When the filter is functioning normally drainage fluid passes through the flow controller 18 and is first filtered by medium 24. Filtered material tends to collect in the folds 25. The fluid then passes through filter medium 20 wherein fine particles and certain fluids such as oil can be absorbed.
If the filter mediums 20 becomes clogged the drainage fluid will build up in the region above the filter medium 20. This fluid can then pass through slots 41 into the chamber 39 and then into the drain via conduit 30. T p:\wpdocs\dys\specie\drain\pro i 11"l -7- Finally, it is to be understood that various alterations, modifications and/or additions may be incorporated into the various constructions and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit or ambit of the invention.
