e Name and Address of Applicant: Actual Inventor(s): Address for Service: Invention Title: Geberit Technik AG Schachenstrasse 77 CH-8645Jona Switzerland Alexander Schuster Spruson Ferguson St Martins Tower 31 Market Street Sydney NSW 2000 Clamping Connector for Axial Connection of Two Tubes a a The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us:- ',ed on1 Dor c oo tqo* faa 5845c Clamping connector for axial connection of two tubes ooooo The invention concerns a clamping connector for axial connection of two tubes, with a rubber collar and a clamp surrounding the said rubber collar, the said clamping connector being provided at both of its ends with a clamping arrangement which has a tensioning screw with a threaded o section passing through a lateral hole in the clamp.
oo o SA clamping connector of this type has become known from DE 35 01 583 C. There the clamping S-connector is used for tightly connecting together muff-less tubes with ends adjoining. A rubber collar provided with radially inward-projecting sealing lips is inserted in a clamp. This clamp is tensioned at its ends by means of a tensioning screw, whereby the rubber collar with its sealing lips is pressed against the outer surfaces of the two tubes. The tensioning screw extends tangentially tothe circumference of the clamp and passes through two rod sections which are each inserted into a looped strap. These looped straps are joined to a band of the clamp by spot-welding. Such clamps must have the capability of easy and rapid installation, but they should still be capable of low-cost series-production and guarantee a permanent connection.
j" The purpose of the invention is to create a clamping connector of the stated type which can be produced essentially at a lower cost and with fewer parts. The clamping connector nevertheless 2 is to be capable of easy installation and is to be functionally reliable.
The problem is solved with a generic type clamping connector, in that the clamping arrangement has two clamping jaws which are essentially U-shaped in cross-section, a screw stock for the tensioning screw being formed by a change in dimensions and in that bent tabs on the clamp project between these clamping jaws. The clamping connector according to the invention can be produced from merely five simple robust parts. Comparatively costly machining steps, for example spot-welding processes, are not required.
ooooo Production is then particularly cost-beneficial if the screw stock, according to its improvement of the invention, is formed by pressing. In the pressing process a screw stock with a tapped hole for t0 the tensioning screw is produced in one operation. The two clamping jaws can be made separately and very inexpensively of sheet metal parts. With clamping jaws of this type, it is possible to tension the clamp over its entire width. Because of that, it can be produced by a so-called widestrip clamp with a high level of tightness.
Further advantageous characteristics follow from the subordinate claims, the following description IS and the drawing.
A design example of the invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing, which shows: in Figure 1 a perspective view of a clamping connector according to the invention, in Figure 2 a perspective view of a part of the clamping connector according to Figure 1, in Figure 3 an end view of the clamping connector, and in Figure 4 another view of the clamping connector.
3 The clamping connector 1 has a rubber collar 2 with radially inward-projecting sealing lips which is inserted in a clamp 3. Radially inward-projecting edges 3b of the clamp 3 and a cambered casing surface 3a (Figure 4) ensure secure seating of the rubber collar 2 in the clamp 3.
The clamp 3 is produced from a strip, in particular a metal strip, and at both of its ends has two tabs 3c offset at 900 which have 2 approximately central through-holes 8, as can be seen in Figure 2. The tabs 3c extending radially outwards stretch axially essentially over the whole width of the clamp 3. The clamp 3 is tensioned by means of a clamping arrangement 9 and closed onto these #oooo two tabs 3c. This clamping arrangement 9 comprises two clamping jaws 4 and 5 and a tensioning screw 6 which has a screw head 6a and a screw shank 6b.
Io The two clamping jaws 4 and 5 are produced from punched-out sheet steel parts by bending and o pressing. These two clamping jaws 4 and 5 are essentially U-shaped in cross-section and each has a strip-shaped clamping area 4c and 5c respectively, and two rectangular bent sides 4b and S•respectively. A screw stock 7 is formed in these sides 4b and 5b by pressing. In the region of the clamping jaws 5, this screw stock 7 forms an internal thread 10 into which is screwed the •I tensioning screw 6. Four indentations 4a and 5a respectively are incorporated in each of the sides 4b and 5b during the pressing process. The sides 4b and 5b are narrowed in the centre by these indentations 4a and 5a, as can be clearly seen in Figure 4. This deformation of the sides imparts high stability to the two clamping jaws 4 and 5 and creates a seat for the tensioning screw head 6a in the clamping jaw 4. The sides 4b and 5b distribute the tensile force over the whole width of -1 the clamping region 4c and 5c and thereby ensure secure clamping.
The clamping arrangement 9 is pre-assembled and the tensioning screw 6 is screwed out more or less to appropriately expand the clamp 3 for connecting two tubes (not shown here). The tubes to be connected are pushed into the clamping connector 1 from opposite sides and butted against 4 each other. By screwing in the tensioning screw 6, the diameter of the clamping connector 1 is reduced and with that the rubber collar 2 is pressed against the outer surface of the two tubes.
