Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT
ORIGINAL
r Name of Applicant: KUO-SHEN WU Actual Inventor: KUO-SHEN WU Address for Service: COLLISON CO.,117 King William Street, Adelaide, S.A. 5000 Invention Title: MANUAL FINE ADJUSTMENT STYLUS FOR KEY DUPLICATING MACHINE The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: I r BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a manual fine adjustment stylus fcr key duplicating machine which comprises a stylus screw, a fine adjustment nut threadedly secured at one end of the stylus screw for rotating in position and enabling said stylus screw to move forward or backward, a return spring assembly arranged at the other end of the stylus screw, a positioning screw passing through a longitudinally elongated eliptic slot provided on the stylus screw in order to prevent the stylus screw from rotating so that the position of the stylus screw can be finely adjusted by turning the nut with user's finger.
a a *o *o *ooo* I s I Conventional stylus for key duplicating machine is provided on the left side of the key duplicating machine while the cutter for key duplicating machine is provided on the right side, and the leading end of the stylus must be aligned with the front edge of the cutter in order to trace the contour of the teeth of the koy sample mounted on the left vice whereby the key blank mounted on the right vice can be cut into the contour of the teeth to be the same as that of a key sample. However, it will result in a slight deviation in the relative position between the key sample and the stylus or between the key blank and the cutter due to the manufacturing tolerance of the key duplicating machine, and 1 0 hence the precisely duplicating of the key can riot be obtained. Therefore, the position of the stylus needs to be adjusted in such a manner that it can be slightly moved forward or rearward in order to remedy the above said deviation. More specifically, the stylus is moved slightly toward the vice if the cutter can not reach and cut the key blank. On the contrary, the stylus is 1 5 moved slightly away from the vice if the cutter cuts too deep into the key blank.
As shown in Fig. 1, the conventional stylus for key duplicating machine is formed in a wedge block, and can be movably inserted into a groove in the machine body. A threaded hole is provided on the machine body below the said groove for engaging a screw having an integral enlarged circular disk formed for inserting into a slit formed on the bottom of the stylus so that the screw can be rotated by a driver to enable the stylus to be moved forward or rearward to a suitable position. However, in order to obtain a firm linear movement of the stylus, a cover is provided on the top of the machine body to prevent the stylus from moving upwardly. Such a cover is used as a jaw for 25 clamping the stylus in association with the machine body by means of a screw to be driven by a spanner to be operated b\ the user in order to prevent the stylus from being moved when it passively traces the contour of the teeth of :i the key sample. Therefore, the conventional stylus for key duplicating machine needs additional tools such as driver and spanner to effect the 3 0 adjustment of the position of the stylus.
Briefly, the present invention overcomes the disadvantages of the conventional stylus for key duplicating machine by providing a manual fine adjustment stylus which can be directly firmly moved without the use of additional tools such as driver, spanner to attain a convenient and precise fine 3 5 adjustmernt of the position of the stylus.
I -I I I Accordingly, it is a primary object of the present invention to provide a manual fine adjustment stylus for key duplicating machine which comprises a stylus screw havinj front and rear ends, a fine adjustment nut threadedly secured at said front end of the stylus screw for rotating in position and enabling the stylus screw to move forward or rearward, a return spring assembly arranged at the said rear end of the stylus screw for forcing the stylus screw to move rearward, a positioning screw vertically passing through a longitudinally elongated elliptic slot provided on the stylus screw in order to prevent the stylus screw from rotating so that the position of the stylus screw can be finely 1 0 adjusted by turning the fine adjustment nut with user's finger.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a rtbber ring is provided on the thread portion of the stylus screw in order to form a friction resistance between the thread portion of the stylus screw and the thread portion of l;e fine adjustment nut and to prevent the stylus screw from being loosened 1 5 during operation.
In a further form of the invention there is proposed a manual fine adjustment stylus for key duplicating machine comprising a stylus screw having front and rear ends (2a, 2b), a fine adjustment nut throadedly secured at said front end (2a) of said stylus screw for rotating in position and enabling said stylus screw to move forward or rearward, a return spring assembly arranged at the said rear end (2b) of said stylus screw and having a cylinder (51) provided with a center hole (512) for insertion of the rear end (2b) of said screw a nut (53) threadedly secured on a reduced thread :portion (24) formed on said rear end (2b) of said stylus screw a return 25 spring (52) arranged between the wall (511) of said cylinder (51) and said nut (53) for forcing said stylus screw to move rearmard, a positioning screw (4) vertically passing through a longitudinally elongated elliptic slot (23) provided on said stylus screw in order to prevent said stylus screw from rotating and guide the same to move forward or rearward in a predetermined (rirection 3 0 so that the position of said stylus can be finely adjusted by turning said fine adjustment nut with user's finger.
Preferably the manual fine adjustment stylus further comprises a rubber ring provided on the intermediate portion of the thread portion (22) of said M stylus screw for forming a friction resistance between said stylus screw (2) Y 3 5 and said fine adjustment nut in order to prevent the latter from being u 4

/i s loosened due to vibration resulted from cutting.
In preference the said fine adjustment nut has an indentation portion (31) formed on the periphery of the front end (3a) of said fine adjustment nut for gripping by the user's finger, anri a set of index graduations (32) formed on the periphery of the rear end (3b) of said fine adjustment nut for indication of the amount of movement of said stylus screw Preferably the manual fine adjustment stylus further includes a marker plate marked with a base point (151) thereon for serving as a base for rotation of said fine adjustment nut and provided on the top (16) of a body at a 1 0 suitable position.
Other objects of the present invention will become apparent from the follovvwing description.
