NURSING MOTHERS' GARMENT This invention relates to a nursing mothers' garment which gives nursing mothers easy access to the breast, in such a way as to minimise unnecessary exposure of the breast and to avoid the need for untucking or lifting up of an entire garment in order to feed a baby.
The invention provides an outer body garment for a nursing mother, which when worn, extends from the shoulders of the nursing mother to the waist of the nursing mother, including: a, rear portion; a front portion having; 15 an overlay portion which extends substantially across the entire front portion of the garment and from an upper portion of the garment to a position 00. intermediate the nursing mother's shoulders and waist when the garment is worn so as to cover the nursing mother's breasts, the overlay portion having a lower edge; an underlay portion which is partly arranged beneath the overlay portion so 25 that the overlay portion overlaps the underlay portion, the underlay portion allowing access to the nursing mother's breasts, the underlay portion extending below the lower edge of the overlay portion at least to the waist of the nursing mother when the garment is worn, the underlay portion having two cutout portions for exposing the nursing mother's breasts and a strip of material between the cutout portions, the strips of material being attached to the overlay portion of the garment above the lower edge of the overlay p portion of the garment; and wherein to feed a baby the lower edge of the overlay portion is raised relative to the underlay portion to allow access to the nursing mother's breast to feed the baby.
e* e Of° *o *o /TP 4 3 A preferred embodiment of the invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a garment embodying the invention; Figure 2 is a view of an underlay portion of the garment of figure 1; and Figure 3 is a view of the garment showing how it is manipulated for breast feeding.
With reference to figures 1 and 2, the garment comprises an underlay portion 12 (which is shown in figure 2) and an overlay portion 14. The underlay portion 12 includes aback 16 and a front 17 which may be sewn together or otherwise joined in a conventional manner. The front 17 includes a pair of cut-out regions which allow a wearer's breast to be exposed for breast feeding. The back 16 also includes contoured portions 20 for providing arm holes and the contoured portion 22 for providing a neck opening.
The cut-out portions 18 are separated from one another by a strip of material 24.
As is best seen in figure 1, the overlay portion 14 comprises a front panel provided with contoured portions 26 forming arm holes with the contoured portions 20 and a So contoured portion 28 for forming a neck opening with the 4 contoured portion 22. The overlay portion 14 overlaps the underlay portion 12 to completely cover the cut-out portions 18. The upper portion of the strip of material 24 is sewn to the overlay portion 14 and the overlay portion 14 is sewn to the underlay portioni 2 at seams 21 and at shoulders 23.
The overlay portion 14 includes a bottom edge which is not secured to the underlay portion 12 or which is releasably secured, to the underlay portion 12 by buttons, velcro fasteners or any other suitable fastener.
As is best shown in figure 3, in order to feed a baby it is only necessary for the nursing mother to lift I the lower unsecured edge 30 of the overlay portion 14 so as to expose the breast for breast feeding. Thus, it is not 15 necessary for the nursing mother to lift up an entire garment or to untuck a garment in order to expose her breast for feeding the baby.
