Conventionally hot water tanks are formed from plastics or non-corrosive metals, and are supported on steel or wooden trays which are provided with means for draining any leakage or overflow to a locality where no damage will be done.
Frequently the water tanks are provided with steel outer Scasings, and if steel drip trays are used (which sometimes occurs) the interface between the drip tray and tank casing can absorb moisture and generate rust areas which reduce the lifespan of the installation. In the alternative, when wood slats are used to support a tank, the wood absorbs moisture and similarly there can be a development of rust in the casing for the tank and the lifespan is not very much improved over the use of a steel based tank.
It is a requirement that a drip tray must have drainage, I d and it is customary in low pressure systems for a carpenter o to provide a sloping support, for the tray to have its base 9) on the support, and for the tank also to slope.
With the object of providing an improvement to the prior art drip trays which are in common use for hot water storage tanks, in an embodiment of this invention a drip tray is i formed from a polymeric material (for example polypropylene) and is provided with a flat horizontal undersurface portion which is suitable for supporting by a horizontal flat surface, beam or the like, but a floor having portions which slope towards one portion of the periphery of the tray, and that portion of the periphery of the tray is provided with drainage means.
While the invention need not necessarily include the abovementioned details an embodiment is described hereunder in some further detail with reference to and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: Fig 1 is a top view of a drip tray, Fig 2 is a part section taken on line 2-2 of Fig 1, Fig 3 is an end elevation taken in the direction of arrow B on Fig 1, and Fig 4 is a detail part section taken at the locality C of Fig 2 but drawn to an enlarged scale.
I In this embodiment, a drip tray 10 comprises a base 11 ,and a peripheral side wall 12 which diverges upwardly from i! the base 11.
L T0 The drip tray is circular in plan, and its base 11 comprises floor portion channels 13 from which a plurality of j arcuate upstanding ribs 14 extend. Each rib 14 comprises two 4 side walls and an upper wall. The ribs 14 however are discontinuous circumferentially but generally concentric, so that the floor portion channels 13 are free flow channels for water if overflow occurs, or if a leakage develops in the tank which the tray must support.
The channels 13 of the floor portions slope downwardly to drain towards a drainage locality 16 near the periphery of the drip tray 10, the drainage locality 16 having two outlets, one outlet being defined by walls 17 and being a side outlet which the other outlet comprises a "knockout" disc 18 which can be removed from the floor 13, but which is adjacent to the walls 17. If the base outlet at 18 is utilised, then the side outlet is sealed by a bung which engages the walls 17. A small trough 19 exists between those two outlets, and when the side outlet is used, ensures a minimal amount of drainage water at the locality of the outlets.
The whole tray is simply moulded from polypropylene, and has lower edges 21 of the side walls of the ribs 11 lying in 2 I I i I n ci0 a flat horizontal tray supporting plane P1 on the underside and the upper rib walls provide tank support surfaces which lie in a second flat horizontal plane P2 within the drip tray, above the floor portion but intermediate the height of the peripheral wall 12. However, as said above, the floor portion channels slope downwardly, the slope being by a distance in Fig 2. Thus, in this invention, the drip tray can be supported on a horizontal base, and support a tank to stand horizontal, yet provide the required drainage.
A consideration of the above embodiment will indicate that although the invention is very simple it nevertheless results in an effective drip tray which is inexpensive, which is convenient to use, and which is Less likely to promote rus't or other corrosion in a tank supported by it.
Claims (7)
1. A drip tray for a storage tank comprising a moulding of polymeric material having a base, peripheral side walls surrounding the base, tray supporting undersurfaces lying in a plane which, in use, is horizontal, ribs extending upwardly from the undersurfacesand providing tank supporting surfaces which lie in a horizontal plane located above the tray supporting.f.-&e.. the ribs flanking a floor which slopes downwardly to a discharge locality.
2. A drip tray for a storage tank according to claim 1 wherein said ribs have side walls the lower edges of which define the tray supporting undersurfaces.
3. A drip tray for a storage tank according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said ribs have upper walls which define the tank supporting surfaces.
4. A drip tray for a storage tank according to claim 2 wherein said floor comprises a plurality of floor portion channels extending between adjacent said rib side walls.
A drip tray for a storage tank according to claim 4 wherein each said rib is part-circular in plan, said ribs being concentric, but said floor portion channels are free flow channels between the ribs.
6. A drip tray for a storage tank according to any preceding claim wherein said discharge locality comprises a trough, and discharge apertures adjacent the trough, and closure means closing at least one said discharge aperture. 4
