The present invention relates to a security and identification system, particularly for shopping trolleys.
Supermarkets and the like maintain large fleets of trolleys for shoppers to take purchases around the store, and then to their cars. As the trolleys are comparatively unsupervised in the car parks, theft is an increasing problem.
As trolleys are made in a limited range of designs, it is difficult or impossible for any trolley owner to positively identify a bare trolley. Store identifiers such as labelled handles are relatively easily removed by thieves. Similarily, plastic plates on the trolley wherever affixed can be removed.
One solution proposed was to stamp an identifier into the trolley. However, thieves simply ground this out before re-selling.
It is therefore an object of the present invention o to provide identification means for shopping trolleys which cannot easily be removed by thieves.
According to one aspect the invention may provide a front plate for a shopping trolley, said front plate having identification means cut entirely through the thickness of the front plate. Preferably, the identification means is the name of the proprietor or a trading style so that identification is readily possible, and the identifier is also advertising for the trolley owner.
An embodiment will now be described with reference 0*S* to the accompanying figures in which:- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a front plate according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a view of an exemplary trolley.
oeS Front plate 10 is in use affixed by welding or other means to the frame of a shopping trolley 20 and carries the casters or wheels 15,16 by affixing to openings 12, 14.
Thus, it will be appreciated that this is a critical part of the trolley. Any substanial weakening of the front plate will render the trolley inoperable.
Identification means 20 i cut entirely through plate 10. This is preferably performed by means of laser cutting.
Thus, a would-be thief must totally replace the front plate in order to re-sell the trolley, a difficult and skilled task. Simply grinding out the identifier severely weakens the structure and produces an unsatisfactory trolley.
It will be appreciated that variations are possible within the spirit and scope of this invention, and in particular the precise configuration of the trolley as a whole does not form part of the invention and may be varied.

Claims (2)

1. An improved shopping trolley, said trolley having a front plate disposed on said trolley so as to affix one or more wheels or casters to said trolley, characterised in that said front plate includes identification recesses extending entirely through the thickness of said front plate, the arrangement being such that said recesses cannot be obliterated without substantially weakening said plate and hence said trolley.
