ANNEX TO THE INTERNATIONAL SEARCH REPORT ON INTERNATIONAL PATENT APPLICATION NO.
EP 8900390 SA 27832 This annex lists the patent family members relating to the patent documents cited in the above-mentioned international search report.
The members are as contained in the European Patent Office EDP file on 27/07/89 The European Patent Office is in no way liable for these particulars which are merely given for the purpose of information.
Hair Care Emulsion The present invention relates to an anion surfactantcontaining hair care emulsion which is rinsed out of the hair after an adequate reaction time and contains ethanol, isopropanol or mixtures of such alcohols for preservation purposes.
Because of repeated bleaching, permanent waving or dyeing the hair, but also because of frequently washing it with degreasing hair cleaning agents the hair structure is damaged.
The hair becomes brittle and loses its sheen. Furthermore, when combing the hair it is electrostatically charged and the roughened surface of the hair causes the hair to become matted and knotty. Combing is thus made very difficult.
Therefore, hair treatment agents having a combabilityimproving and caring effect, particularly in the form of hair care emulsions have substantially gained in importance.
These hair care emulsions usually are in the form of oil-in-water emulsions that can be easily rinsed out. They contain semi-solid or solid substances, as for example, specific oils and waxes, as structural components. Anionic or cationic surfactants are primarily used as emulsifiers.
In contrast to hair shampoos these hair care emulsions, 25 which are also referred to as cream rinses, conditioners or hair curatives, have no cleansing or degreasing effect because of their relatively low content of surfactants.
While for cationic hair care emulsions the addition of preservatives is usually not required since the cationic surfaco* tants per se act as preservatives particularly in the acid pH range, anionic hair care emulsions must be protected against infestation with microorganisms by the addition of preservatives and e.g. formaldehyde, 5-bromo-5-nitro-2,3-dioxane, p-hydroxy benzoic 35 ester, salicylic acid, 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxy diphenyl ether, 5-chloro-2-methyl-3-isothiazolon, 2-methyl-3-isothiazol- INTERNATIONALER RECHERCHENBERICHT

one and 2-bromo-2-nitro-propanediol-(1,3) are used as preservatives in this case.
Recently some of these preservatives, as for example, formaldehyde and 2-methyl-3-isothiazolone, have been suspected of not being entirely harmless in physiological and dermatological respects. Furthermore, it is known that aldehydes and phenols acting as preservatives are subject to reactions or interactions with proteins.
Furthermore, for aldehydes there is also the danger of a sensitization, while phenols, as for example, salicylic acid, particularly in higher concentrations, have a keratolytic effect.
For the above-mentioned reasons the use of a plurality of preservatives is increasingly more extensively restricted on a world-wide scale or altogether prohibited.
Particularly in the case of anionic hair care emulsions, which must be properly compatible in physiological and dermatological respects on the one hand and must be protected against microbial infestation on the other, a satisfactory preservation thus frequently is extremely problematic.
'25 The present invention provides a stable anionic hair *care emulsion which has outstanding hair-conditioning properties and is excellently preserved but without an impairment of the physiological compatibility of the hair care emulsion caused by Sthe preservation.
35 35 in It has now been surprisingly found that an anion surfactant-containing hair care emulsion which contains 0.1 to percent by weight of an anionic surfactant and 9 to 18 percent by weight of ethanol, isopropanol or of a mixture of the alcohols provides such a hair care emulsion.

Amer. Cosmet. Perfum. 1972, 87(2), 53-6 EP, A, 0218441 (LION CORP.) 15. April 1987, 1-9 It is particularly surprising that neither the formation of the emulsion nor the stability of the emulsion is detrimentally affected by the addition of alcohol although in the literature alcohols are recommended as emulsion breakers, as S aids for the separation of the oily and aqueous phases of emulsions (demulsification); see for example, Houben-Weyl, "Methoden der organischen Chemie", Vol. I/1 (1958), Page 214 and 216; Deutsche Apotheker Zeitung 104 Jg. No. 39, Page 1334 and Chinese Journal of Applied Chemistry, vol. 3, No. 6 (1986), Page 55-57.
Thus, the present invention provides an anion surfactant-containing hair care emulsion which contains 0.1 to 6.5 percent of an anionic surfactant and 9 to 18 percent by weight of ethanol, isopropanol or of an ethanol/isopropanol mixture.
The hair care emulsion according to the present invention preferably contains 0.4 to 4 percent by weight of an anionic surfactant and 10 to 14 percent by weight of ethanol, isopropanol or of an ethanol/isopropanol mixture. Anionic surfactants suitable for use in the hair care emulsion according to the present invention are, for example, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or alkamine salts of alkane sulphonates, alkyl benzene sulphonates, alkyl sulphates, alkyl ether sulphates and alkyl ether carboxylates, as for example, C 12 to C 18 -alkyl sulphate sodium salts, particularly sodium cetyl stearyl sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphate; anionic fatty acid condensation products, as for example, the potassium salt of the condensation product from coconut fatty acid chloride and animal protein hydrolysate
R
(Lampepon S of the firm of Grunau); soaps, as for example, S sodium or potassium stearate, and disodium salts of the sulpho- 30 succinic semi-esters of alkanol amides. The hair care emulsion .preferably contains no further surfactants in addition to the anionic surfactant. However, when additional surfactants are contained in the hair care emulsion, then they are present in.a distinct deficiency relative to the weight of the anionic surfactant.
3 -3 'i ANHANG ZUM INTERNATIONALEN RECHERCHENBERICHT OBER DIE INTERNATIONALE PATENTANMELDUNG NR.
The hair care emulsion according to the present invention is an oil-in-water emulsion which preferably contains 1 to 16 percent by weight of an oil component and 59.5 to 89.9 percent by weight of water. Hair care emulsions containing 2 to 10 percent by weight of the oil component and 72 to 87.5 percent by weight of water are particularly preferred.
Any natural or synthetic oil or wax that can be used in oil-in-water emulsions, either alone or in combination, can be S used as oil component.
Suitable oils or waxes are, for example, paraffin oils and isoparaffin oils; silicone oils and silicone waxes, particularly linear polydimethyl siloxanes; petrolatum; paraffin waxes and S ceresin waxes; higher fat alcohols, as for example, cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol; fat alcohol esters, as for example, cetyl or stearyl palmitate; fatty acid glycerides, as for example, glycerol monodistearate or glycerol tristearate, lanolin; lanolin oils; lanolin alcohols and beeswax.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention there is provided an oil-in-water emulsion which is characterized in that it contains 9 to 18 percent by weight of ethanol, S: isopropanol or of a mixture of ethanol and isopropanol, 1 to 16 percent by weight of at least one oil or wax, 0.1 to percent by weight of an anionic surfactant and 59.5 to 89.9 percent by weight of water.
An oil-in-water hair care emulsion, which contains (a) 3 10 to 14 percent by weight of ethanol, isopropanol or of a mix- 30 ture of ethanol and isopropanol, 2 to 10 percent by weight of at least one oil or wax, 0.4 to 4 percent by weight of an anionic surfactant and 72 to 87.5 percent by weight of water, is particularly preferred.

care emulsion according to the present invention preferably is 1:4 to 1:100, a weight ratio of 1:8 to 1:43 being particularly preferred. The anionic surfactant and the oil component should be present in the hair care emulsion according to the present invention in a weight ratio of 1:1 to 1:13, a weight ratio of 1:1 to 1:11.5 being particularly preferred.
Furthermore, the hair care emulsion according to the present invention can also contain any conventional additive as for example, perfumes, thickeners, antioxidants, active substances against dandruff, herb extracts, hair care substances, for example, cholesterol and betaine as well as cosmetic dyes and this hair care emulsion can be in the liquid form and also in the pasty form.
The anion surfactant-containing hair care emulsion according to the present invention is not sensitizing and has a good skin compatibility. Because of the alcohol content a preservation of the hair care emulsion is attained without detrimentally affecting the stability or physiological compatibility of the hair care emulsion. Furthermore, because of the addition of alcohol the combability-improving properties of the hair care emulsion are distinctly improved, particularly for wet hair.
Therefor, the present invention also relates to the use of 9 to 25 18 percent by weight of ethanol, isopropanol or of an ethanol/isopropanol mixture for the preservation of anion surfactant-containing hair care emulsions.
The hair care emulsion according to the present invention is applied in the usual manner in that after washing the hair an adequate amount of the hair care emulsion (approximately 5 to 20 g depending on the length of the hair) is spread in the towel-dried hair and is rinsed out with lukewarm water after a reaction time of approximately 2 to 15 minutes.
The present invention will be illustrated by the fol- 5 ~ul I' lowing Examples.
