(ORIGINAL)
600761 FOR OFFICE USE: Class Ir Application Number Lodged f Y o Complete Application No.
Specification Lodged Published Priority: Related art: This doculmient conitains the a-1 nclmefls made under SQtion 49 and is correct for for TO BE COMPLETED BY APPLICANT Name of Applicant: FIRE FIGHTING ENTERPRISES PTY. LTD.
Address of Applicant: Actual Inventor: Address for Service: 118 Glen Osmond Road, Parkside, State of South Australia, Commonwealth of Australia Stephan James McConnell COLLISON CO, Patent Attorneys, 117 King William Street, Adelaide, South Australia, 5000 Complete Specification for the Invention entitled: "FIRE FIGHTING HOSE REEL" The following statement Is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me: V1 2 This invention relates to hose reels particularly where intended for fire fighting support apparatus and to a method of assembly of hose reels for this purpose.
It is a requirement by law that in many different types of buildings, there shall be available a hose wound upon a reel which is permanently attached to a water supply such that in the event of a fire, the hose can be quickly pulled from the reel to douse the fire.
The problem to which this invention is specifically directed is the present cost of hose reels of this type and the cost of assembly of such a hose reel together with a hose coil for supply to purchasers.
An object of this invention is therefore to propose a hose reel which is bO comprised of parts such that these can be economically manufactured and a bore reel with hose combination can be assembled more economically such that a hose coil can be directly located around the o 20 hub of such a reel during the course of manufacture of the reel.
The invention could be said to reside in a method of manufacture of a hose coil and a hose reel assembly, wherein the hose reel comprises a first part and a second part, each part having a cheek with a circular outermost periphery, an inner circular edge joining with a hub having a substantially protruding shape with an innermost end closed over, the closed over ends of each part adjoining and joined so the two parts are coaxially put together and where the two parts forming the hose reel assembly are joined together by inserting the respective protruding portion into respective sides of an open inner core of a hose coil and joining the protruding portions while so held, 3 In a further form the invention can be said to reside in a method of manufacture of a hose coil and hose reel assembly wherein there is a first part and a second part which together can form a reel, each part having a cheek with a circular outer most periphery and an inner circular edge turning into a hub having a substantially cylindrical or conical shape with an innermost closed over end, the method i comprising the steps of locating the hub of a first part into one side of the hollow core of the hose coil, locating the hub of the other part into the other side of the hollow core of the hose coil, then joining the two hubs together so as to trap the coil between the respective cheeks of the reel shape thus formed.
In preference, each of the parts is formed from sheet metal and the Sshape is achieved by spinning.
The closed over ends of each of the hub ,hapes will in preference have appropriate apertures passing mutually therethrough firstly to provide support for a shaft that will pass therethrough and secondly whereby rivets can mutually engage through the respective ends to hold the parts together.
In preference, the two parts are substantially identical In shape and have a shape such that one when not joined to the other can nest hub within hub, !In the manufacture of a reel of this type, an inner end of the hose coil i will pass through a portion of the reel and is thus coupled to a water supply conduit by rotatable coupling, It is of course implicit therefore that a portion of the hub will be cut to allow for egress of such pipe end therethrough, t4 The invention will be better understood when referred to the embodiment which will be described with the assistance of drawings in which: Fig. 1 is an end view of a reel constructed according to the preferred embodiment, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the reel as in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an exploded view shecving the two parts which go Sio together to make the hose reel, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the embodiment as shown in Figs.
1,2 and 3 Fig. 5 is a different perspective view of the same embodiment, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the exploded parts of the same embodiment as in the preceding figures, and Fig. 7 is the sme view as in Fig, 1 with a cross-section of the hose coil, Referring to the drawings, the hose reel is constituted by two parts 1, 2 each of which is of substantially identical shape and each of which is constituted by an outer cheek portion 3 in the one case and 4 in the other and an inner protruding portion which acts as a j hub shown respectively at 5 and 6, The outer cheek portion respectively 3 and 4 has an outer most circular periphery and its shape is generally planar with an innermost circular edge which turns into the hubs 5 and 6 which are in turn closed over at an innermost end at respectively 9 and i 10 the ends 9 and 10 being adjoining and joining the two parts 1 i0 and 2 together by rivets 11 such that the generally circular and cylindrical shapes are each propelled in coaxial alignment.
As will be further seen, each of the parts 1 and 2 are manufactured fro li sheet metal by having a first sheet of metal of constant cross-sectional thickness such as steel rotated and then of course in the conventional technique of forming such sheet metal by spinning, working the sheet with an outer circular crosssection into the shown shape, The hub shape can be variously shaped either cylindrical or conical or some approximation of these which is understood within the terminology cylindrical or conical the purpose being generally to provide a centre or hub for the hose coil.
The hose coil is shown in Fig 7 and it is implicit that there is to be included a hose coil 14 with an open inner core 15 through which the respective hubs 9 and 10 of the reel are located.
The method of manufacture of the completed hose reel, hose coil combination accordingly includes the steps of taking as separate parts parts 1 and 2 of the hose reel, locating the hose coil 14 with its open central core 15 over the first hub 5 of the first part 1 and then bringing the other part 2 with its hub 6 into coaxial alignment with the first thereby encompassing the hose coil.
Appropriate apertures 16 are used to effect rivetting of the two parts 1 and 2 together.
The hose reel thus formed has a central aperture 17 through which a support axis can pass and there is one further aperture k through which an inner end of the hose can pass to provide a rotatable water outlet connection.
It will thus be seen that by using the technique described very significant savings can be achieved over previous manufacturing 4 technique for hose reels.
