Abstract

The liquid to be treated enters via the central channel (1) to leave, in the form of two liquid phases of different densities, through the conduits (4, 5), sealing discs (6, 11, 19) being mounted respectively on the central body (7), on the intermediate disc (12) and on the upper cover (20) of the machine. Resting against these discs are movable rings (8, 13, 14, 17) subjected to the pressure, on the one hand, of the liquid introduced into the machine and, on the other hand, of the two liquid phases separated by the latter, while providing a perfect seal between the different phases, without the need for providing elastic return members and without it being necessary to resort to special cooling means. <IMAGE>

Actual Inventor: Address for Service: Remo ZUCCATO CALLINANS Patent Attorneys, of 48-50 Bridge Road, Richmond, State of Victoria, Australia.
Complete Specification for the invention entitled: An improved centrifugal separator with rotating seals on the fixed upper head.
The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:-* Noto: The description is to be typed in double spacing, pica type face, in an area not exceeding 250 mm in depth and 100 mm In width, on tough white paper of good quality and it is to be inserted inside this form.
d -2- The present invention relates to centrifugal separators for liquids and is particularly intended for use in the milk industry but may also be used for mineral oils, vegetable oils or other liquid mixtures in which, due to the centrifugal force, the liquids are separated in their different components which have different density.
A centrifugal separator of this type is described in US Patent No.
4,810,240, subject matter of which is incorporated herein by reference.
The earlier patent provides that the liquids having different density are separated under the action of the centrifugal force of the apparatus by being 0 10 caused to ascend within annular concentric conduits formed in the rotating part 0 0 00 of the apparatus and then being distributed through conduits formed in the fixed I oo head of the apparatus for the various destinations.
o o The hermetic seals between the rotating part of the apparatus and the 0 0 fixed head are created in the earlier patent by means of movable rings which rotate together with the rotating part of the apparatus, the rings coming in contact 00 0 with other rings resiliently fixed to the fixed upper part of the apparatus, thereby o oopOo eliminating contact of the various liquid phases with the atmosphere. Suitable 0 0 conduits are provided for letting cooling water under pressure flow through for 0 0 0 the purpose of cooling both the fixed rings as well as the rotating rings which provide the seal.
o o The seal between the movable rings and the fixed rings is created in 0 00 the apparatus according to the earlier patent by suitable springs which act on -J rings which do not rotate because they are disposed on the fixed part of the apparatus but which are subjected to the action of the compression springs which push the rings downwardly. Therefore, the rings which do not rotate are compelled to remain in contact with the movable rings located in the rotating part ,of the apparatus, thus avoiding that the liquids separated due to the centrifugal -3- I iforce mix again.
This solution gives rise, however, to some drawbacks due to the complexity of the hydraulic circuits involved in the separation of the liquids, the presence of the compression springs which involve very vulnerable structures, which require continuous control and require frequent replacement; and the properties of the liquids being used.
An object of the present invention is to improve the centrifugal separator of the earlier patent and to reduce the drawbacks mentioned Sc hereinabove.
The present invention therefore provides a centrifugal separator for the separation of a liquid into several phases of different density, said separator including a fixed upper head, a rotating body having a central part, an inlet conduit for said liquid into said rotating body, concentric conduit means for the different phases of different density, the liquid of lower density ascending through the more internal conduit, the liquid of greater density ascending
*CC
through the external conduit, said internal conduit communicating with a coaxial outlet conduit disposed in said fixed upper head, said external conduit oooC0 C communicating with an outlet disposed in said fixed head, a ring fixed to said central part of the rotating body, movable rings suitably shaped and capable of displacement, one of said movable rings being capable of displacing with respect to the inlet conduit, said one of said movable rings being located coaxially with Srespect to said inlet conduit and under the thrust of the pressure of the liquid in said inlet conduit coming in contact with said fixed ring and providing a seal between said inlet conduit and said internal conduit, a fixed disk located in the upper part of said internal conduit, said other of said movable rings being capable of displacement with respect to the outlet coaxial conduit and being subject to the pressure of the liquid of lower density from said internal conduit and to the .1 ht -4pressure of liquid of greater density from said external conduit and providing a seal between the liquids in the internal conduit and external conduit, a further ring of said movable rings being external and being coaxial with said outlet conduit, said further ring being capable of displacement along the external conduits and providing an external seal, said movable rings ensuring hermetic seals and ensuring a perfect separation between the various phases without requiring return springs.
The invention will be explained in more detail hereinbelow by reference to the attached drawing which illustrates a view of the upper part of the 1) centrifugal separator partially axially in cross-section with the rotating seals according to the present invention.
'As shown in the drawing the liquid being handled is introduced into the centrifugal separator through the central conduit 1 and exits after having been separated in the two phases of different specific weight through the coaxial "15, conduits 2 and 3. In particular the phase of lower specific weight which ascends through the coaxial more internal conduit 2 is brought to the coaxial conduit 4 which is disposed in the fixed head of the apparatus at the outlets while the phase with greater specific weight which ascends from the external coaxial conduit 3 exits through the exit outlet 5 which is disposed in the fixed part of the apparatus. The arrows shown in the figure designate the course followed by the different liquid phases.
L, f: The seal between the central inlet conduit 1 an:: coaxial exit conduit 2 is provided by the ring 6 which is fixed t~ the central part 7 of the rotor. The movable ring8 comes in contact with central part 7 of the rotor. The movable ring 8 is located coax.:ally with respect to the central tube 1 and its upper lip 8'contacts the fixed ring 6, under the thrust action of the pressure of' the liquid present in conduit 1, which pressure is exerted in the direction of the arrows 9.
The stop element 10 is fixed to the central conduit 1 to 0 oo 10 limit the axial motion of the movable ring 8.
The seal between the liquids of the coaxial conduits 2 and 0 0 0 3 is provided by the fixed ring 11 which is fixed to the disk 12, 0 a the latter closing in its upper part the conduit 2 by the two rings 13 and 14. The motion of the rings 13 and 14 is limited by the stop 0 0 0 15 elements 15 and 16 which are fixed to conduit 4. The two rings, 13 0 o o 0 0 and 14 are subjected respectively to the pressure of the liquid of S" the light phase which comes from conduit 2 and to the pressure of the liquid of the heavy phase which comes from conduit 3.
*The external seal is provided by the movable ring 17 which 20 is coaxial with the external conduit 5 and which is limited in its axial motion by the stop element 18, the latter being fixed to the external wall of conduit 5. The external seal is also provided by the fixed ring 19 which is fixed to the head 20 of the apparatus.
The advantages resulting from the present invention and 25 specifically the head of the centrifugal separator for the liquids with rotating seals with respect to the head of the earlier centrifugal PUS rCeR0 1o. 10, 2 L-0>.

clear not only with respect to the substantial simplif:.ct it:. construction of the apparatus but also above all because of the elimiti':. n of elastic elements and specifically springs because the seal betweer, the movable rings and the fixed rings is provided by the came pressIur exerted by the liquid on the same movable rings.
It should also be stressed that there is a substantial advantra resulting by the cooling performed by the same liquids cn the rings, without the necessity of providing for the cooling by means of circulation 0 t of cold water under pressure.
-10 Obviously, the apparatus has been described and illustrated 6 I.
o in the drawing attached hereto according to one specific embodiment which, however, has been described only by way of a non-limiting example.
The particular constructional details may be varied in form and different aspects, while the essential characteristics of the invention remain unchanged.
