Abstract According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a lock for a manhole cover, the lock including a locking tab operable via a lifting key received in an aperture extending through the lock, the locking tab movable between locking and released positions to releasably secure the cover within a manhole, wherein the lock is configured so that the locking tab moves to a released position on rotation of the key inserted into the aperture and engaged with the cover to enable lifting, wherein the aperture extends through the lock enabling debris entering the aperture with the key removed to fall through the aperture into the void below the cover.' 12 14--- 44 16FIGURE 1 4
