Abstract

Transport Transmission Coupler Arrangements A connector (26) has cables (28) secured thereto. The connector is fast with a mounting 5 plate (30) which is connected to a side wall (22) of a signal box. The connector and transmission lines (28) of different lengths may be rotated in order to effect the connection of the coupler to the signal box. P30318GB - As filed 5 March 2013 Appleyard Lees 29l

Description

The present invention relates to a system including a signal box for the transportation industry and a coupler to be retrofitted to the signal box, use of the coupler to retrofit the signal box, and a method of retrofitting a signal box using the coupler. The present invention is particularly applicable to signal transport transmission coupler arrangements.
Where wires are to be secured to a signal base the top of the base is removed to expose terminals inside the box. Wires are then cut to length and connectors are secured to each end of the wires. Then the one end of the wires is connected to the terminals and the other end is secured to and connected to terminals at the edge of the box.
This is time consuming. Furthermore, the connectors can be applied in a faulty manner. In addition cables of wire are left on site which are vulnerable to theft.
It would be desirable to overcome at least one of the above or other disadvantages.
According to one aspect of the present invention a system includes a signal box for the transportation industry, the signal box having an aperture formed through an external wall for providing wire access to internal connections, and the system further includes a transport transmission coupler to be retrofitted to the signal box, wherein the coupler comprises: a connector for plug-coupling a cable to the signal box; a plate for clamping the connector to the signal box, wherein the connector is fast with the plate so as to be arranged to be accessed externally to the signal box; and a plurality of electrical transmission lines each having a free end for connection to the internal connections of the signal box and an end connected to the connector.
Another aspect of the present invention provides use of a coupler to retrofit to a signal box for the transportation industry, wherein the signal box has an opening formed through an external wall for providing wire access to internal connections; the coupler comprising: a connector for plug-coupling a cable to the signal box; a plate for clamping the connector to the signal box, wherein the connector is fast with the plate so as to be arranged to be accessed externally to the signal box; and a plurality of electrical transmission lines each having a free end for connection to the internal connections of the signal box and an end connected to the connector.
According to another aspect of the present invention a method of retrofitting a coupler to a signal box, wherein the signal box has an aperture formed through an external wall for providing wire access to internal connections and the coupler comprises: a connector for plug-coupling a cable to the signal box; a plate for clamping the connector to the signal box,
2014201604 09 Mar 2018 wherein the connector is fast with the plate so as to be arranged to be accessed externally to the signal box; and a plurality of electrical transmission lines each having a free end for connection to the internal connections of the signal box and an end connected to the connector; and the method comprises connecting free ends of the electrical transmission lines to the internal connections and clamping the coupler to the signal box.
The method may comprise plug coupling a cable to the connector to electrically connect with the transmission lines.
The invention is further defined in the claims.
The present invention can be carried into practice in various ways but one example will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a signal box 10 with the top removed, and
Figure 2 is an end view of a coupler 12, connected to the signal box.
The box 10, such a signal box, includes a base 14 and opposed outwardly extending side walls 16 and 18 and end walls 20 and 22. The box may be in any orientation but for ease of explanation the box is shown with the base being lowermost. The box is shown with the top cover removed.
The coupler may extend through any of the walls. In present embodiment the coupler is shown extending through the end wall 22. In the present embodiment two couplers are shown connected in the end wall. They may be separated by an outwardly extending flange
24. For convenience only the coupler 12 shown to the left of figure 1 will be described. It will be appreciated that the other coupler may be the same.
The coupler includes a connector 26 having transmission lines which may be electrical such as cables or wires 28 secured thereto. The connector 26 may be fast with a mounting plate 30. The mounting plate may have a hollow threaded member 32 projecting away from the connector with the wires extending through the hollow threaded member 32. The connections of the wires to the connector may be effected at a remote location such as in a factory and the connections may be tested offsite.
To fasten the coupler to the box the threaded member 32 may be inserted through an opening (not shown) in one end wall 22. A threaded nut 34 may be screwed onto the threaded connector to clamp the connector to the side wall. If the opening in the end wall 22 is threaded the coupling may be rotated to fasten the connector in the side wall. In this instance the nut 34 may not be necessary.
2014201604 09 Mar 2018
Grub screws (not shown) connect through the nuts 34 into the wall 22 in order to secure the nuts against rotating through vibration and in order to resist theft attempts.
The wires 28 may have connectors 36 such as crimped connectors that may be fastened to lugs 38 projecting from base 14 of the box possibly after the connector is made fast with the end wall.
Such fastening may be in any convectional manner such as by soldering or tightening a nut onto the threaded lugs 38.
The wires may have different lengths to reach the required lug.
The top of the base may then be secured in place.
The coupler may be retrofitted to an existing box or may be fitted to a new box.
A further cable (not shown) may then be plugged into the coupler such as female members of the further cables cooperating with male members 40 of the coupler in a conventional manner.
Whilst the enforcement has been described primarily in relation to the signal box for the rail 15 industry it will be presented that the present invention could be applied to any transportation industry, particularly where cables are required to be connected at a remote site.
Attention is directed to all papers and documents which are filed concurrently with or previous to this specification in connection with this application and which are open to public inspection with this specification, and the contents of all such papers and documents are incorporated herein by reference.
All of the features disclosed in this specification (including any accompanying claims, abstract and drawings), and/or all of the steps of any method or process so disclosed, may be combined in any combination, except combinations where at least some of such features and/or steps are mutually exclusive.
