Description
1 Document of value, with respectively matt and gloss protective layers The present invention relates to a document of value bearing two protective layers. In the particular field of bank notes there is the problem of their wearing, due especially to their 5 significant level of soiling as a result of continuous handling they undergo, which makes them tacky and unrecognizable. This wear is increased when the bill is made of fiduciary paper, but is attenuated when it is made of 10 a plastic-based material. In this latter case, it is often the printing which becomes blurred. In any case, to slow down this wear and as far as possible prevent the document from soiling quickly, it is known to preferably coat the two faces of the bill with a 15 transparent, or even translucent, protective layer in the form of a glaze of matt visual appearance revealing the impressions affixed thereto. Document DE 199 32 517 discloses a production process of a film bearing matt and gloss glazes for 20 protecting smart cards from problems of wear due to phenomena of friction. 5478133_1 (GHMatters) P88034.AU 2 An aim of an embodiment of the present invention is to refine the prior art by making use of this protective layer as a support for additional security means, at least first-level, that can be, 5 detectable by the naked eye, by an observer. In another embodiment of the invention, in the event where the document itself bears a security element, is to further improve the visual appearance of this security element, by making it particularly 10 difficult to reproduce by unauthorized persons. So, a first aspect of the present invention is to provide a document of value constituted by a support sheet whereof at least one face comprises, at least on part of its surface, a transparent or translucent 15 protective layer called "first layer", of matt visual appearance, this layer being partially coated with a second protective layer, also transparent or translucent, of visual gloss appearance, wherein the note comprises a security element consisting of 20 deformation of said sheet and in that this element comprises two contiguous regions of different textures, which confer respectively to these zones a matt appearance and a gloss appearance in specular reflection, and wherein said second protective layer is 25 totally in register with said region of gloss appearance. Thus, the second impression of visual gloss appearance should be all the more visible since it can be deposited on a glaze matt, reinforcing the contrast 30 between the two. The contrast between the first matt layer and the second layer (gloss) should be visible because of their difference in brightness (that is, the light intensity reflected by direct lighting in specular 35 reflection). But the assembly created by these two 5478133_1 (GHMatters) P88034.AU 3 layers remains transparent, the subjacent impressions not being visually altered. According to other advantageous characteristics of this document: 5 - said first layer can be continuous, whereas the second layer can be formed by at least two zones distinct from each other; - said distinct zones are formed as letters; - it comprises a security element consisting 10 of a deformation of said sheet and this element comprises two contiguous regions of different textures, which confer respectively to these zones a matt appearance and a gloss appearance in specular reflection; 15 - said deformation can be achieved by the embossing stamp technique; - the difference in roughness between said regions is clear and obvious, or progressive; - said second protective layer can be at 20 least partially, preferably totally, marking said region of gloss appearance; - it can be devoid of a first protective layer marking the region of gloss appearance of said security element; 25 - one or the other of the first and second protective layers incorporates at least one of the following second-level security means: . organic or mineral pigments of fluorescent or phosphorescent type, visible under infrared, or a 30 combination thereof; . liquid crystals, for example of nematic or cholesteric type; . thermochrome/photochrome or photothermochrome compounds; 35 . organic or mineral tracers. 5478133_1 (GHMatters) P88034.AU 4 - one and/or the other of said first and second protective layers is constituted by a glaze, for example deposited by flexography; - said second layer is deposited in the form 5 of an impression of guilloche or microtext type, for example iridescent. Other embodiments the invention will be described in detail herein with references to diagrams, which are exemplary only, and in which: 10 Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bank note according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a sketch explaining treatment of a zone of the bill of Figure 1 achieved by the "embossing stamp" technique and forming a security 15 element; Figures 3 and 4 are simplified sectional views of the security element of Figure 2 under specular reflection. As indicated above, the bank note 1 of 20 Figure 1 comprises two large opposite faces 10 and 11, whereof just one, in this case the face 10, is visible here. Of course, only what is visible on the face 10 will be described hereinbelow. However, this description is also valid for the face 11 which can be similar to 25 the face 10 from the point of view of the printing procedures undertaken. This bill is for example made of fiduciary paper, based on cotton fibres or, according to another embodiment, of a fine sheet of plastic material such as 30 polypropylene, polyamide etc. Irrespective of the material utilised, it can also be monolayer as constituted by several layers of paper or plastic material, or even by the two materials together. 5478133_1 (GHMatters) P88034.AU 5 As is known per se, this bill can integrate internally or on its surface one or more security means well-known per se, such as a watermark, a security thread, backgrounds offset by guilloche, iridescent, 5 intaglio print, holograms in a band or "patch", etc. In the present case, the bill shown comprises a background lined for example with offset print not shown here. The technique of intaglio printing is used to 10 print the portrait 101 of a person. This bill is of a facial value of one hundred monetary units, this facial value being referenced 102, itself intaglio-printed. Also, in the upper left corner of the face 10, 15 the bill comprises a security element 4 to which reference will be made later. In a manner well-known per se, the face 10 (and preferably the face 11), is coated with a transparent, or even translucent, protective layer 2 20 called "first layer". This is a glaze of matt visual appearance, for example: - based on water of esters and fatty alcohols; 25 - of the type drying by ultraviolet radiation, a compound of acrylates, of oligomers monomers and photoinitiators, preferably deposited on the two faces by the well-known printing technique called flexography. 30 This is preferably printing in the form of a flat tint, completely covering the faces 10 and 11. However, it can be feasible that this glaze covers only part of the surface of the bill. In a different embodiment not shown, this 35 printing could be in the form of microtext, that is, 5478133_1 (GHMatters) P88034.AU 6 giving by the naked eye the illusion of continuous coating, whereas, when enlarged, this print is constituted by juxtaposition of letters and/or of signs distinct from each other. This applies if the printing 5 is done in "negative", the texts being made hollow. In keeping with the invention, the first layer 2 is partially coated by a second layer 3 which also constitutes a protective layer, which is also transparent, or even translucent, but which exhibits a 10 visual gloss appearance. This is for example a glaze based on acrylates, oligomers - monomers and photoinitiators. In this case, this second protective layer 3 is here constituted by the seal formed by the letters 15 "B" and "N", referring to the numeral references 30 and 31 in the figures. This pattern is repeated several times on the bill. Contrary to what might be apparent from 20 Figure 1, this second layer renders perfectly visible what is placed below, in this case, the portrait 101 or the background garnished of impressions offset. Such "gloss on matt" overprinting allows the holder of the bill to be assured simply and with little 25 effort of the authenticity of the document (first-level security), the gloss appearance being reinforced by the contrast resulting from first printing. As pointed out earlier, in this preferred embodiment the bill has a security element 4 which 30 consists of surface die-pressing of the sheet constituting the bill. As is evident from Figure 2, this element 4 comprises two contiguous zones 40 and 41, of different textures, which confer respectively to these zones a 5478133_1 (GHMatters) P88034.AU 7 matt or respectively gloss appearance in specular reflection. In this case, in the present case, the figure "100", referenced 40, is formed by the "embossing stamp" 5 technique, so as to confer on it a smooth surface state. The paper inside the value "100" is calendered. This facial value is integrated within a pattern in the form of a header 41 which has the particular feature of having a textured and rugged 10 profile, also achieved by the inkless printing technique called "embossing stamp". The texture of the pattern 41 is also modulated, with the darkest zones being the most rugged. The header 41 can also be formed by a 15 succession of zones inked in intaglio. The depth of etching can vary such that the quantity of ink, and thus the tint, is also modified. These treatments differentiated from zones 40 and 41 confer thereto respectively gloss and matt 20 appearances. In a first embodiment of the invention, illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, this entire security element 4 is covered by said protective matt layer, whereas only the region perpendicular to the zone 40 of 25 smooth surface state is coated with the second protective layer of gloss appearance 3. In other terms, and as shown in these figures, as soon as an observer looks closely at the zone in the form of a header 41 of matt appearance and of hilly 30 texture, peaked, the connected parameters of the stamped region and of the glaze 2 are added. Inversely, because the vertical stance of the zone 40, the two layers of glaze 2 and 3 are superposed, only the gloss appearance of the zone 40 and of the 5478133_1 (GHMatters) P88034.AU 8 second protective layer 3 are perceived by the eye and are added in specular reflection. Therefore, the matt, respectively gloss, appearance of this security element 4 is further 5 reinforced. Figure 4 illustrates a particular embodiment in which only the peaked zone 41 is coated with the protective matt layer 2, while opposite the gloss zone 40 only the second glaze 3 of gloss appearance is 10 present. In conclusion, the matt and gloss contrasts observed from a shallow angle are clearly improved relative to the existing prior art due to the collaborative action of the embossing stamp and the 15 glazes. According to other appearances of the invention, the embossing stamp can take up a simple latent image, double the type "SEAL by Oberthur Technologies" (registered trade mark) or special etching 20 as described in the French patent application No. 0951376 in the name of the present applicant. It is also possible to play on the progressive nature and transition of textures obtained by the embossing stamp to obtain contrasts or combinations 25 between the matt and gloss zones. Also, if progress is made from a smooth surface state, without texture, to a textured surface state, reproduction of such a pattern by an unauthorised person is made even more difficult. Also, it can be provided that the protective 30 layer has a security of matt/gloss type whereof at least one zone also has a tactile feel detectable to the touch. To reach a second level of security, it can be feasible for one or the other of the first protective 5478133_1 (GHMatters) P88034.AU 9 layers to incorporate at least one of the following security means: - one or more organic mineral pigments of fluorescent or phosphorescent type, visible under 5 infrared radiation, or even a combination of the two types of pigments; - liquid crystals, for example of nematic or cholesteric type; - thermochrome/photochrome or 10 photothermochrome compounds; - an organic or mineral tracer. It can also be feasible to incorporate print rich in finesse of guilloche or microtext type into the embossing stamp or, as already mentioned, into one or 15 the other of the glaze. This print can be iridescent. In a particular embodiment, the second layer of glaze gloss is offset relative to the offset printing 101 included in the bill. This means that this layer is not in an exact location with the print, that is, it 20 occupies a smaller surface, larger than the former or is placed elsewhere than on this print. Of course, this applies only for print other than the ones done for making the security element 4, for which the sheet is deformed. 25 In a preferred embodiment, offset printing can also be registered with matt/gloss glaze printing which connects effects, especially of fluorescence and/or phosphorescence. However, in the case of printing in a dark hue, it is preferred that the glaze matt/gloss does 30 not exactly register the latter, subject to losing visibility (the matt/gloss contrast is less). In another preferred embodiment, not shown, a combination of glaze matt/gloss can also be done in which the matt glaze contains an open zone. The glaze 5478133_1 (GHMatters) P88034.AU 10 gloss, which covers this open zone, thus appears to be a different tint and at a lesser height. It is to be understood that, if any prior art publication is referred to herein, such reference does not constitute an admission that the publication forms a part of the common general knowledge in the art, in Australia or any other country. In the claims which follow and in the preceding description of the invention, except where the context requires otherwise due to express language or necessary implication, the word "comprise" or variations such as "comprises" or "comprising" is used in an inclusive sense, i.e. to specify the presence of the stated features but not to preclude the presence or addition of further features in various embodiments of the invention. 5478133_1 (GHMatters) P88034.AU
