Description
S&F Ref: 956658 AUSTRALIA PATENTS ACT 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR A STANDARD PATENT Name and Address Lachlan Richard Goldspink, of Applicant: Australian Citizen, of 105/3-5 Greenknowe Avenue, Elizabeth Bay, New South Wales, 2011, Australia Actual Inventor(s): Lachlan Richard Goldspink Address for Service: Spruson & Ferguson St Martins Tower Level 35 31 Market Street Sydney NSW 2000 (CCN 3710000177) Invention Title: A reusable gift package Associated Provisional Application Details: [33] Country: [31] Appl'n No(s): [32] Application Date: AU 2009903416 21 Jul 2009 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 5845c(2837163_1) A Reusable Gift Package Technical Field The present invention relates to a reusable gift package/container. 5 Background of the Invention It is customary in most cultures to present gifts in gift packaging. The most common forms of gift packaging are disposable decorated gift wrapping paper, and disposable gift bags. Gift packaging provides an element of surprise for the gift receiver 1o and adds aesthetically to the gift presentation. However, tonnes of gift packaging material are discarded worldwide annually, usually after single use. This results in significant waste of resources such as paper, and hence a significant negative environmental impact. This is particularly relevant as such paper is subjected to a number of production processes, such as bleaching, inking, 15 printing, etc. These processes also have a negative environment impact and further complicate recycling of such paper. Object of the Invention It is the object of the present invention to substantially overcome or at least 20 ameliorate one or more of the above disadvantages or at least provide a useful alternative. Summary of the Invention The present invention provides a package for containing a gift item, the package having an external surface, at least a portion of the external surface having a graphic 25 thereon which includes a plurality of gift card cells. The package is preferably a bag having means for reducing its length and/or width for receiving different size and/or shape gift items. In one embodiment, the bag includes a front panel having a top edge, a bottom edge, side edges and top and bottom corners, the bag having first fasteners disposed 30 adjacent respective top corners of the panel, and second fasteners disposed adjacent respective bottom corners of the panel, wherein each first fastener can engage a respective second fastener to effectively reduce the length of the space inside the bag. The bag preferably includes third fasteners disposed adjacent a mid-portion of the top edge and fourth fasteners disposed adjacent a mid-portion of the bottom edge, AH22(2826226_3) 2 wherein the first fasteners can engage the third fasteners and the second fasteners can engage the fourth fasteners to effectively reduce the width of the space inside the bag. In another embodiment, the bag includes a front panel having a top edge, a bottom edge and first and second side edges, the bag panel includes a first zipper half having a s slider extending upwardly along the first side edge from the bottom edge to about midway of the first side edge, a second zipper half having a slider extending downwardly along the second side edge from the top edge to about midway of the second side edge, a third zipper half having an insertion pin extending upwardly along the second side edge from the bottom edge to about midway of the second side edge and a fourth zipper half having 10 an insertion pin extending downwardly along the first side edge from the top edge to about midway of the first side edge, wherein the first and third zipper halves and the second and fourth zipper halves can engage each other to reduce the lateral width of the bag, and the first and fourth zipper halves and the second and third zipper halves can engage each other to reduce the longitudinal length of the bag. 15 The graphic preferably consists of gift card cells which are substantially identical with each other and which are sequentially numbered Each gift card cell preferably includes the titles "To", "Message" and "From" and blank spaces for writing under or next to each title. Each gift card cell is preferably printed onto the package with ink material which 20 provides a writing surface in blank spaces of the gift card cell. The ink material is preferably adapted to allow the writing in the gift card cell to be erased. Alternatively, each gift card cell comprises a front panel superimposed over a rear panel, wherein writing on the front panel in use copies the writing to the rear panel, the 25 front panel being separable from the rear panel with the rear panel retained on the package. The front panel preferably includes a plurality of spaced small perforations thereon which expose portions of the rear panel, such that writing on the front panel effectively writes on the rear panel. The front panel preferably includes a separation tab to assist in peeling same from the rear panel. 30 In another embodiment, the package includes a removable panel having the graphic, the panel being removably attachable to the package. The panel preferably includes the graphic on both sides thereof. The bag preferably includes a pen pocket and/or a booklet pocket. The package in one embodiment is sized and shaped for receiving wine bottles.
3 The package in another embodiment is in the form of a box having the gift card cells arranged at side panels thereof. The package is preferably made from reinforced material to for receiving and protecting fragile gift items. 5 Each gift card cell is preferably a desired shape design, such as a gift bag design, a wine bottle design, or a stocking design. The package can alternatively be in the form of a fabric wrap, which can be wrapped around the present. In another embodiment, the package includes an internal surface, and at least a 1o portion of the internal surface having the graphic thereon which includes a plurality of gift card cells. If the package is a bag, the bag can be turned inside out to provide more gift cells. The present invention in another aspect provides a reusable gift package, the package having a plurality of means for addressing the package to a gift recipient, and is wherein previously filled addressing means on the package provide a record of use of the gift package viewable by further users and recipients. Brief Description of the Drawings 20 Preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of examples only, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 shows a bag package in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, where (a) is a front view, (b) is a rear view, (c) is an enlarged view of a top right corner section of the bag, and (d) is an enlarged view of a bottom right corner 25 section of the bag; Figure 2 is an enlarged view of two gift card cells of the bag of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a modified embodiment of the bag of Figure 1 where (a) is a front view, (b) is a rear view, and (c) is an enlarged view of a top right corner section of the bag; Figure 4 is another modified embodiment of the bag of Figure 1; 30 Figure 5 is another modified embodiment of the bag of Figure 1 Figure 6 is another embodiment of a bag package where (a) shows a first configuration; (b) shows a second configuration and (c) shows a third configuration; Figure 7 is a modified embodiment of the bag of Figure 6 where (a) shows a first configuration; (b) shows a second configuration and (c) shows a third configuration; 4 Figure 8 is another embodiment of a bag package for wine bottles; Figure 9 is another embodiment of a package in the form of a box; Figure 10 is another embodiment of a package in the form of a Christmas stocking; Figure 11 shows a modified version of a peelable gift cell copy, where (a) shows the 5 unpeeled copy and (b) shows the copy being peeled off; Figure 12 shows another embodiment of the peelable gift cell copy, where (a) shows the unpeeled copy, (b) is an enlarged view of the circled portion of the gift cell, (c) shows the front panel of the circled portion after peeling, and (d) shows the rear panel of the circled portion after peeling; to Figure 13 shows a modified version of a bag use history graphic; and Figure 14 shows a modified embodiment of the bag having a removable/replaceable bag history graphic panel. 1s Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments Figure 1 shows a gift bag package 20 in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The bag 20 is made from durable environmentally friendly material, such as organic cotton. The bag 20 includes a front panel 21 connected to a rear panel 22 at a bottom edge 15 and side edges 16 thereof Top edges 17 of the panels 21 20 and 22 are not connected to each other to form the open top 18 of the bag 20. Handles 23 are attached adjacent the top edges 17. The front panel 21 includes a decorative graphic 24 thereon and the rear panel 22 includes a 'bag use history' graphic 25 which includes a plurality of gift card cells 26 printed thereon. As shown in Figure 2, each gift card cell 26 is a graphic of a desired shape which in 25 this embodiment is a gift bag graphic. The gift card cell 25 includes a number of titles 27 typically found on a gift card, such as "To", "Message" and "From" and blank spaces for writing under or next to each title 27. Additional titles can also be included as desired, such as "Occasion", "Date" and "Location". The graphic 25 consists of several gift card cells 26 which are substantially identical 30 with each other and preferably sequentially numbered. In use, a first person giving a gift to a second person would place the gift inside the bag 20 and fill out the lowest number available cell 26 with the gift recipient and gift giver's names and a message such as "Happy Birthday". The second person or another person can then reuse the bag 20 at some time in the future when giving a gift, and such a person would fill out the next 5 number available cell 26 with their names and a message. The process is repeated until all cells 26 are filled. After that, the bag 20 can continue to be used for other purposes such as a shopping bag. Thus, the single bag 20 can be reused a number of times as a gift package by s different persons. Also, the filled panels 26 provide an immediate viewable history of the use of the bag 20. The rear panel 22 can also include charity sponsorship information 28 thereon. For example, purchasing the bag 20 from a supermarket may include a contribution to a charity to encourage consumers to use the bag 20 instead of wrapping paper. 10 The rear panel 22 can also include an environmental message 29, such as information on how to use the bag 20 and how using same can save on wasted wrapping paper. Message 29 can include information on the negative, environmental impact of disposable gift packaging. This will inform users, and promote environmentally responsible behaviour, and encourage reuse of the bag 20. 15 One advantage of the 'bag use history' graphic 25 with the cells 26 is that a separate traditional Gift Card is not necessary, thus saving more paper. Each cell 26 is preferably a drawing of the gift packaging itself e.g. a gift bag (as shown in Figure 2). This assists users to visualize the amount of disposable gift bags that will be saved by using the reusable bag 20. 20 As shown in Figure 1(d), some or all of the cells 26 can include information on how much gift wrapping paper has been saved by the continued reuse of the bag 20. This information is an estimation of the result of the reuse effort. For example, a large paper gift bag may require I square meter of wrapping paper. If a typical wrapping paper is 100gsm (grams per square meter), each reuse of the bag 20 is equivalent to saving 100 25 grams of paper. So after 30 reuses, it can be estimated that 3kg of paper has been saved. In the embodiment shown, 30th cell 26a on the bag 20 indicates a saving of 3 kg of wrapping paper. This statement "3kg of paper saved!" help users visualize the result of the reuse effort. It is anticipated that users visualizing the significant impact of the reuse process are more likely to participate in reusing the bag 20. 30 Preferably, each cell 26 is printed onto the bag 20 with ink material which provides a smooth, light coloured surface to allow easy writing in the blank spaces of the cell 26. The ink material preferably allows the use of conventional ball point pens or markers to be used to write in the cells 26. This is relevant as some bag material and texture may not be suitable for writing.
6 In another embodiment, such ink material may be adapted to allow the writing in the cells 26 to be erased if the bag 20 is washed, for example in washing machine. This will allow further reuse of the bag 20 after all cells 26 have been filled and used if desired. s The bag 20 also includes a number of spaced fasteners adjacent its top edge 17, such as buttons 31, to allow the closing of the bag open top to prevent contents from falling out. This also allows the bag's handles 23 to be inserted inside the bag 20, so the bag 20 has the appearance of a conventional gift package. It also adds to the element of surprise as the gift receiver must patiently undo the buttons before viewing the gift. Other 1o means of closing the bag open top can also be used, such as a ribbon or tie. Embodiments of the package according to the present invention provide a durable, reusable gift bag that has been designed with reuse in mind. The bag allows several users to write the details of their gift giving event on the bag itself. The history and details of all the reuses of the bag are displayed on the bag. is The invention describes a system for recording and viewing reuse history on the gift packaging itself in a visual, graphic and interesting way. As a result the system is more convenient to use, is easier to understand the purpose and concept of the product, it provides visualisation of the results of the reuse, and it imparts value to the reused gift package. 20 Modified embodiments of the bag 20 will now be described. It will be understood that in each of these modified bags, each bag includes a bag use history graphic 25 having a number of gift card cells 26. Figure 3 shows a modified bag 20a. The bag 20a is similar to the bag 20 described above but includes a permanent fabric marker pen/ball point pen pocket 31 and a further 25 reuse booklet pocket 32. The pen pocket 31 allows a writing implement to be attached to the bag 20a, which is particularly useful if a special type of pen is required for writing on the bag 20a. The reuse booklet 32 comprises a booklet or folded paper having an additional number of gift card cells 26 for increasing the reuse number of the bag 20. Figure 4 shows another modified bag 20b which includes a clip 32 attached to a 30 handle 23 which allows an envelope 33 or other document to be attached to the bag 20b. Figure 5 shows another modified bag 20c which includes a pocket 34 for receiving an envelope or other document such as a gift card. Although the gift card cell 26 can replace the need for a gift card, some users may wish to supply a card as well so that the recipient may keep it, or so they may write a longer message. Also, if all of the gift card cells 26 7 have been filled, a user can still use the bag 20b or 20c as a gift bag by writing their message on a gift card and placing the gift card into the pocket 34 or attaching it via clip 32. Figure 13 shows a modified brief version of a bag use history graphic 25a, which 5 comprises a number of tick box cells 26a. The tick box cells 26a are consecutively numbered. The graphic 25a can be printed under the graphic 25 on the rear panel 22 to extend the number of reuse of the bag 20. Thus, when all the gift card cells 26 are filled, a user can use the tick box cells 26a to record their use, and use the bag 20 together with a gift card as described above. The graphic 25a with the use of gift cards can also be used io to replace the graphic 25. Figure 6 show an embodiment of a gift bag 20d which can be configured to receive different size and shape gifts. In the bag 20d, the front panel 21 includes first female fasteners 35 disposed adjacent respective top corners of the panel 21, and first male fasteners 36 disposed adjacent respective bottom corners of the panel 21. The bag 20d is also includes second male fasteners 37 disposed adjacent a mid-portion of the top edge 17 and spaced from each other, and second female fasteners 38 disposed adjacent a mid portion of the bottom edge 15 and spaced from each other. Figure 6 (a) shows a first configuration of the bag 20d as a full bag where the male and female fasteners 35 to 38 are not in engagement. Figure 20(b) shows a second 20 configuration where top edge male and female fasteners 35 and 37 and bottom edge male and female fasteners 36 and 38 engage each other, effectively reducing the lateral width of the bag 20d. The bag 20d in this configuration can thus be used to for example receive a single wine bottle. Figure 20(c) shows a third configuration where top edge male fasteners 35 engage bottom edge female fasteners 36, and bottom edge male 25 fasteners 38 engage top edge female fasteners 37, effectively reducing the longitudinal length of the bag 20d. The bag 20d in this configuration can thus be used to receive smaller sized gifts. In the bag 20d, the gift card cells 26 are printed in the rear panel 22, which remains exposed in the different configurations of the bag 20d. In this embodiment, the gift card 30 cells 26 can be modified to adapt to the different configurations. For example, the gift card cells 26 may not be numbered which will allow a gift giver to cross-out prior used cells and fill out an unused cell as desired. Also, the gift card cells 26 at the bottom half of the bag 20d may be left blank to allow such cells to be turned upside down in the third 8 configuration. Alternatively, such cells 26 may include titles adapted for both upright and upside down configurations of that portion of the panel 22. Figure 7 is another embodiment of a bag package 20e, which is a modified version of the bag 20d. In this embodiment, the fasteners 35 to 38 are replaced by zipper 5 fasteners. A first zipper half 40 having a slider 41 extends upwardly along a first side edge 16a from the bottom edge 15 to about midway of the side edge 16a. A second zipper half 42 having a slider 43 extends downwardly along a second side edge 16b from the top edge 17 to about midway of the side edge 16b. A third zipper half 44 having an insertion pin 45 extends upwardly along the second side edge 16b from the bottom edge 10 15 to about midway of the side edge 16b. A fourth zipper half 46 having an insertion pin 47 extends downwardly along the first side edge 16a from the top edge 17 to about midway of the side edge 16a. The zipper halves 40 and 42 can thus respectively engage one of the other zipper halves 44 and 46. Figure 7 (a) shows a first configuration of the bag 20e as a full bag. Figure 7(b) 15 shows a second configuration where the bottom zipper halves 40 and 44 engage each other and the top zipper halves 42 and 46 engage each other, to reduce the lateral width of the bag 20e. Figure 7(c) shows a third configuration where the zipper halves 40, 46 and 42, 44 in each respective side edge 16a and 16b engage each other to reduce the longitudinal length of the bag 20e. 20 Figure 8 shows another embodiment of a bag package 20f which is sized and shaped specifically for receiving wine bottles. In the bag 20f, the design of each gift card cell 26 is in the shape of a wine bottle. Figure 9 shows another embodiment of a package in the form of a box 20g. In the box 20g, the gift card cells 26 are arranged at the side panels 21g thereof. The box 20g 25 can be made from reinforced material to allow same to receive and protect fragile gift items. Also, the box 20g can be in the form of a shoe box housing a purchased shoe. For example a shoe manufacturer may design the shoe box so that it could be reused as a gift box. Thus, the box 20g has a primary use (packaging for the shoes) and a secondary use 30 (reusable gift packaging). The shoe manufacture may feature their logo on the box 20g and benefit from the advertising that occurs as the gift packaging is reused many times Figure 10 is another embodiment of a package in the form of a Christmas stocking 20h. In the stocking 20h, the design of each gift card cell 26 is also in the shape of a stocking and includes consecutive calendar years. This allows the stocking to be reused 9 every Christmas and provides an immediate use history of past Christmas presents for users. Figure 11 shows a modified version of a gift cell 26a, being peelable. The gift cell 26a includes a front panel 48 superimposed over a rear panel 49 which is substantially 5 similar to the front panel 48. In the gift cell 26a, writing on the front panel 48 copies the writing to the rear panel 49, for example by carbon copying. The front panel 48 includes a tab 50 to assist in peeling same from the rear panel 49. In use, a gift receiver can retain the front panel 48 to for example remind them of who the gift giver is. The rear panel 49 with the writing thereon remains in the package to form part of the reuse history graphic io 25. Figure 12 shows another embodiment of a peelable gift cell copy 26b. The gift cell 26b also includes a front panel 48 superimposed over a rear panel 49. The front panel 48 includes a plurality of spaced perforations 51 thereon which expose portions 52 of the rear panel 49. Writing on the front panel 48, for example with a marker pen, effectively is also writes on the rear panel 49 via the perforations 51. Thus, when the front panel 48 is peeled off, a copy of the writing is left on the rear panel 49. The present invention thus provides a reusable package where the reuse history of the package is immediately available and viewable. Users do not have to access an external database, such as an internet database, to record or view reuse details. Previous 20 reuse details are recorded on the package itself which is helpful for explaining to users what the purpose of the product is and what the process for using the product is. The reuse cells 36 are also numerous (typically more than 20) and are may be illustrative and graphic in appearance which is useful as it provides clear visualisation of the results of reusing the product. Users are more likely to participate if they can see and understand 25 the large amount of paper that can be saved as a result of reusing the product. The package can also include information such as a quantitative estimate of the paper saved which is linked to the amount of reuses, thus users can quantitatively understand the result of the reuse of the product further encouraging participation. In addition, capturing the reuse details on the actual gift packaging imparts value to 30 the object itself. This is because the package becomes a unique object that is inscribed with the personal messages of people in the user's social network. If the reuse history is not on the object itself (e.g. on a database) this effect is lessened. Yet another advantage is that others who may be present at the moment of gift giving can also view the reuse history as it is instantly accessible on the object itself.
10 The system of gift giving is particularly interesting as it also captures and displays interesting information about the people and relationships in a person's social network, and thus provides incentive for consumers to participate in the reuse of the object. Also, some consumers hesitate to reuse traditional gift packaging because they fear 5 being seen as 'cheap'. A reusable bag according to the present invention helps to legitimize gift packaging reuse because "Reuse" is clearly the objective of the product, and the positive environmental result of reuse is more clearly explained than existing products. Another reason consumers hesitate reusing traditional gift bags they received is they 1o usually look 'used' or worn out. Wear and tear of the present gift bag however is not a deterrent as reuse is a feature of the bag which is shown prominently and is celebrated and promoted. Such wear and tear can even encourage users to keep reusing the bag as it adds to its reused 'worn out' appearance and history. The reuse history encourages consumers to reuse the bag because it provides an is interesting "game" for them to participate in. Users can see the trail of gift giving, and the connections between various people in their lives in one snapshot on the bag. They can also see the personal messages people have left. Recording the reuse on the bag itself imparts a certain value or quality to the object itself that would be lost if the history was recorded somewhere else. The bag is of greater "Value" due to the fact that the reuse is 20 recorded directly on the bag itself. Users who do not typically reuse a gift bag are more likely to do so due to the interesting and fun nature of this concept. The preferred embodiment also creates an object which passes through many hands, and is seen by many people. This makes it a useful medium to communicate a message, or advertise something directly on the bag. For example, the bag can have an 25 environmental message, a company logo or a product brand. Thus, it is possible to create custom gift bags for retail stores, featuring that retailer's logo on the bag. Although preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described, it will be apparent to skilled persons that modifications can be made to the above embodiments, or that the invention can be embodied in other forms. For example, 30 the gift packaging can be configured into other shapes such as a fabric wrap, a stocking, a tube etc. Such packaging can also be adapted to be reconfigurable into other shapes/sizes as desired. The reconfigurable bags shown in Figures 6 and 7 are also useful as a normal carry bags (i.e. not just a gift bag).
11 In a further modification, the bag 20 can be used as a grocery shopping bag with the cells 26 left blank or having titles such as "date" and "shopping list". A user can then write their shopping list on an available cell 26 and carry the bag 20 with them when doing their shopping. The cells 26 can also include a graphic on the number of plastic 5 bags saved and the positive impact of same on the environment which will encourage users to continually reuse the bag 20. Figure 14 shows a modified embodiment of the bag having a removable or replaceable bag history graphic panel 53. The panel 53 includes the bag history graphic 25 on both sides thereof, with the panel 53 being removably attachable to the bag 20. In 1o the embodiment shown, the bag 20 includes spaced buttons 54 for insertion into slots 55 of the panel 53 for attaching the panel 53 to the bag 20. This embodiment is advantageous as the panel 53 can be detached, flipped over and reattached to the bag 20, thus allowing the panel 20 to have more gift card cells 26. The panel 53 in another embodiment can be formed as a concertina sheet with many faces is having the gift card cells thereon. It is also possible for users to buy additional replacement panels 53 when the gift card cells 26 are filled. The removable panel also allows the bag 20 to be washed without the panel 53, thus preserving the use history. The panel 53 can also be made available as a separate sheet which would allow users to attach it to a conventional bag (e.g. with 20 special pins). The panel can also be made from a material ideal for writing, where it does not have to be same as the bag material. The panel in another embodiment can also be supplied as an iron on transfer, which will allow users to create their own reusable gift bag.
