Description
A Child SafeyVehicle FIELD OF INVENTION This invention relates to a child safety seat for a vehicle, and in particular, to a child safety seat for a vehicle for cooperating with the seat belt system of the 5 vehicle when used in a rearward facing mode to firmly retain the seat in position in the event of an accident. BACKGROUND ART The use of child safety seats to accommodate infants and young children whilst travelling in a vehicle is common throughout the world. Most countries have 1o established various laws and regulations that dictate the manner in which infants and children are to be transported in vehicles, and the types of restraints that are acceptable. Most such laws require the infant/child to be restrained in a dedicated and approved child safety seat that is anchored or otherwise secured to a rear seat of the vehicle. The child safety seat may include a dedicated harness that restrains 15 the child in position within the seat, or the child safety seat may utilise the vehicle seat belt or a separate harness to restrain the child therein, depending upon the size and/or age of the child. For transporting babies/infants up to around 6 months of age and/or 70 cm in length and up to 12 kg, rearward facing child safety seats are recommended. Such 20 seats are typically referred to as Type A seats and provide improved support and protection to infants in a supine position. Type A seats are typically fitted to a rear seat of a vehicle by a tether arrangement that attaches to a dedicated anchorage point provided on the vehicle. The tether arrangement typically secures an upper region of the safety seat in position, with the lower region of the safety seat being 25 typically secured in position by the vehicle seat belt system. In such arrangements, the lower region of the safety seat typically has a recess formed in the base portion thereof, through which either the lap belt or the combined lap belt and sash belt of the seat belt system is passed. The seat belt system is then buckled in position about the base of the safety seat. Such a system 30 of threading the seat belt system through the base of the seat is quite cumbersome and difficult to perform, particularly where space is limited on the vehicle seat. It has also been found that in some instances, the forces applied by the seat belt system on the structure of the base of the safety seat are sufficient to cause deformation of the base of the safety seat. As such, the position of the seat belt system with respect to the base of the safety seat may change, resulting on the integrity of the safety seat and the stability of the safety seat becoming compromised. As such, there is a need to provide a safety seat for a vehicle that has an improved 5 means for securing the safety seat in position on the vehicle seat. The above references to and descriptions of prior proposals or products are not intended to be, and are not to be construed as, statements or admissions of common general knowledge in the art. In particular, the above prior art discussion does not relate to what is commonly or well known by the person skilled in the art, 10 but assists in the understanding of the inventive step of the present invention of which the identification of pertinent prior art proposals is but one part. STATEMENT OF INVENTION Accordingly, in one aspect of the invention there is provided a child safety seat for use in accommodating a child in a rearward facing position in a vehicle, 15 comprising: a body having a backrest portion and a seat portion for receiving the child therein; a base configured to be received on a seat of the vehicle to support the body thereon; 20 a tether attached to said body and having a hook member to facilitate attachment to an anchorage point on the vehicle; and at least one retaining member provided on a rear surface of the backrest portion, the at least one retaining member being configured to receive and retain in position a seat belt system of the vehicle around the backrest 25 portion of the body to aid in securing the child safety seat to the seat of the vehicle. In one embodiment, the at least one retaining member comprises a pair of elongate fingers provided on a rear surface of the backrest portion of the body, the pair of elongate fingers defining a space into which the seat belt system of the vehicle is 30 received. The seat belt system of the vehicle may comprise a lap belt and/or a sash belt and the lap belt and/or the sash belt is received within the space. The at least one retaining member may be located on the rear surface of the backrest portion adjacent the base. The at least one retaining member may be formed integral with the body. In another embodiment, the at least one retaining member comprises a slot or 5 recess formed in the rear surface of the backrest portion in which the seat belt system of the vehicle is received and retained. The slot or recess may be formed adjacent opposing sides of the rear surface of the backrest portion. A groove or channel may be formed on the rear surface of the backrest portion to receive the seat belt system of the vehicle as it passes around the backrest portion 10 of the body. The or each retaining member may be positioned in alignment with the groove or channel to act to retain the seat belt system of the vehicle within the groove or channel during use. According to another aspect, there is provided a method of securing a child safety seat in a rearward facing mode on a seat of a vehicle comprising: 15 positioning the child safety seat on said vehicle such that a base portion of the child safety seat is supported on the surface of the vehicle seat: tethering an upper region of the child safety seat to an anchorage point on a vehicle; extending at least a lap belt of a seat belt of the vehicle around the child 20 safety seat such that the lap belt is received by one or more retaining members located on a rear surface of a backrest of the child safety seat; and connecting the at least lap belt of the seat belt of the vehicle to a buckle of the vehicle. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS 25 The invention may be better understood from the following non-limiting description of preferred embodiments, in which: Figure 1 is side view of a prior art arrangement of a safety seat installed in a rearward facing position in a vehicle; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the child safety seat of Figure 1; 30 Figure 3 is a side view of a child safety seat according to an embodiment of the present invention installed in a rearward facing position in a vehicle; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the child safety seat of Figure 3; Figure 5 is an end view of the child safety seat of Figure 3; Figure 6 is a perspective view of a child safety seat according to an alternative embodiment of the present invention installed in a rearward 5 facing position in a vehicle; and Figure 7 is an end view of the child safety seat of Figure 6. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Preferred features of the present invention will now be described with particular reference to the accompanying drawings. However, it is to be understood that the 1o features illustrated in and described with reference to the drawings are not to be construed as limiting on the scope of the invention. The present invention will be described below in relation to its application to a Type A child safety seat, namely a child safety seat dedicated for use in vehicles with babies/infants up to around 6 months of age and/or 70 cm in length and up to 1s 12 kg. However, it will be appreciated that the present invention could equally be applied to a variety of child safety seats wherein the seat is able to be used in a rearward facing manner. Further, whilst the invention will be described below in relation to its effectiveness in the event of a vehicle accident, it will be appreciated that the present invention may be equally effective in a variety of applications, 20 such as sudden breaking of a vehicle or sudden changes in vehicle direction to avoid an accident. According to Figures 1 and 2, a child safety seat 10 in accordance with a prior art arrangement is shown. The safety seat 10 is positioned on a rear seat 5 of a vehicle in a rearward facing manner as is recommended for use with infants and young 25 children. The safety seat 10 comprises a body 12 supported on a base 16. The base 16 is configured to be located on a surface of the rear seat 5 of the vehicle such that the body 12 is supported in a reclined position as shown. It will be appreciated that the angle of inclination of the body 12 with respect to the base 16 may be variable to accommodate a variety of positions for child comfort. 30 The body 12 comprises a backrest portion 13 that supports the back and head region of a child located therein, and a seat portion 14 that supports the legs and posterior of the child. The body 12 is typically configured to extend along either sides of the child to provide protection to the child from side impact.
A tether 15 is typically provided to secure the upper region of the backrest portion 13 to a dedicated vehicle anchorage point (not shown), such that the safety seat 10 is anchored in position. The tether 15 is typically in the form of a loop of webbing material that is attached, or otherwise secured in position, to an upper region of the 5 backrest portion 13 of the body 12 and which includes a hook member (not shown) at a distal end that engages with the vehicle anchorage point. Such a tether arrangement attempts to secure the upper portion of the child safety seat 10 in position to assist in providing stability to the child safety seat 10 in the event of an accident or sudden breaking of the vehicle 10 To secure the lower portion of the child safety seat 10 in position on the surface of the vehicle seat 5, the base 16 has a recess 17 formed therein. The recess 17 provides a passage through which the seat belt system 20 of the vehicle is threaded, to be secured to the seat belt buckle 23 located on an opposing side of the seat 10 in a traditional manner. As is shown in Figure 2, a vehicle seat belt 20, 1s typically consists of a sash belt 21 and a lap belt 22 that is threaded through the recess 17 from one side of the safety seat 10 to the other side and has a clip member located at the distal end thereof that engages with the buckle 23. The seat belt system 20 can then be tightened about the base of the seat in an attempt to retain the lower portion of the child safety seat in position against the vehicle seat 20 5. It will be appreciated that in such a prior art arrangement as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the child safety seat is secured at an upper portion by way of the tether 15, and at a lower portion by way of the seat belt system 20. In such a prior art arrangement, the seat belt system 20 attempts to pull the lower rear portion of the 25 seat 20 against the vehicle seat 5. It has thus been found that in the event of an accident or sudden breaking of the vehicle, the forced applied by the seat belt system 20 against the structures of the base 16 can be sufficient to deform the base structure such that the seat belt system 20 may become dislodged from its optimal position as shown in Figure 1. As such, the seat belt system 20 may slide under or 30 towards the central region of the base 16 thereby altering the stability of the safety seat 10. This can cause the rear portion of the safety seat 10 to become loose and to rise, significantly compromising the safety of the child positioned therein. In order to overcome this inherent problem with prior art safety seats 10, safety seat 30 in accordance with the present invention is proposed, as is shown in 35 Figures 3 --- 5. As with the prior art device, safety seat 30 is positioned on a rear seat 5 of a vehicle in a rearward facing manner as is recommended for use with infants and young children. The safety seat 30 comprises a body 32 supported on a base 36. The base 36 is configured to be located on a surface of the rear seat 5 of the vehicle such that the body 32 is supported in a reclined position as shown. It will 5 be appreciated that the angle of inclination of the body 32 with respect to the base 36 may be variable to accommodate a variety of positions for child comfort and safety. The body 32 comprises a backrest portion 33 that supports the back and head region of a child located therein, and a seat portion 34 that supports the legs and 10 posterior of the child. The body 32 is typically configured to extend along either sides of the child to provide protection to the child from side impact. A tether 35 is also typically provided to secure the upper region of the backrest portion 33 to a dedicated vehicle anchorage point (not shown), such that the safety seat 30 is anchored in position. The tether 35 is typically in the form of a loop of 15 webbing material that is attached, or otherwise secured in position, to an upper region of the backrest portion 33 of the body 32 and which includes a hook member (not shown) at a distal end that engages with the vehicle anchorage point. Such a tether arrangement acts to secure the upper portion of the child safety seat 30 in position to provide stability to the child safety seat 30 in the event of an 20 accident or sudden breaking of the vehicle. It will be appreciated that the tether 35 may assume a variety of different forms whilst still falling within the spirit of the present invention, and as a variety of tethers 35 are known in the field of child safety seats, such tethers 35 will not be described in further detail. In order to secure the lower portion of the child safety seat 30 in position on the 25 vehicle seat 5, an alternative arrangement to the prior art is provided. As is more clearly shown in Figures 4 and 5, the rear surface of the backrest portion 33 of the body 32 has a pair of retaining members 40 provided thereon. The retaining members 40 may be in the form of a pair of fingers or lugs that are fixed to the rear surface of the backrest portion 33 at a lower extremity thereof and which project 30 upwards to form an open gap between the rear surface of the backrest portion 33 and the retaining members 40. The purpose of the open gap enables the seat belt system 20 to be extended around the back surface of the child safety seat 30 and located therein. The retaining members 40 then act to hold and position the seat belt system 20 in place about the child safety seat 30. It will be appreciated that 35 whilst two retaining members 40 are shown, the number of retaining members 40 may vary whilst still falling within the spirit of the present invention. Further, the retaining members 40 are shown as rigid members, however, it will be appreciated that in an alternative embodiment of the present invention the retaining members 40 may be flexible or made from a flexible material, such as strapping or webbing material. The retaining members 40 are preferably formed integrally with the body 32 of the 5 safety seat 30. However, it is also envisaged that the retaining members 40 may be formed separate to the safety seat 30 and attached thereto by way of a variety of attachment means, such as bolts, screws and the like. The retaining members 40 are typically in the form of rigid, elongate fingers having a length sufficient to accommodate the width of the seat belt system 20. As 10 the seat belt system 20 typically comprises the sash belt 21 and the lap belt 22, the width of the gap formed between the rear surface of the backrest 33 and the retaining members 40 is sufficient to accommodate both belts 21 and 22. In the arrangement as shown, the seat belt system 20 extends around the back of the backrest portion 33 and engages with a buckle member 23 in a conventional 15 manner to secure the seat belt system 20 in position as is shown in Figures 3 and 3. The rear surface of the backrest portion 33 may include a groove or channel (not shown) that assists in locating and/or retaining the seat belt system 20 in position as it extends across the rear surface of the backrest portion 33 of the seat 30. The channel may be formed in the backrest portion 35 to a depth sufficient to receive 20 the sash belt 21 and or the lap belt 22 of the seat belt system 20. In this regard, the channel has a width sufficient to receive the belts 21, 22 such that they can be readily retained in position during use. In this regard, the channels may act as a visual aid to assist the user in fitting the safety seat 30 in position for use. As can be seen in Figure 3, the slope of the backrest portion 33 of the safety seat 25 30, when the safety seat 30 is in the rearward facing position, acts to further retain the seat belt system 20 in position within the retaining members 40. As the natural tendency of the seat belt system 20 is to tighten around the safety seat 30, the angle of the backrest portion directs the seat belt system in a downward direction, namely towards the base 36 of the safety seat 30. The retaining members 40 30 thereby act to prevent the seat belt system 20 from sliding further down the backrest portion 33, whilst locating the seat belt system 20 in a desired position. In the event of a vehicle accident, the seat belt system 20 acts against and across the rear of the backrest portion 33 of the safety seat 30. As the force is applied against the lower region of the backrest portion 33, the load is evenly distributing across 35 the backrest portion 33 and acts to pull the safety seat downwards and towards the seat, significantly reducing the likelihood of slippage of the seat belt system and bouncing of the safety seat 30, which is a common unwanted side effect of conventional seat designs. In another embodiment, the retaining members 40 may be in the form of slots or recesses formed in the sides of the backrest portion 33, rather than fingers. In such 5 an arrangement the seat belt system 20 may be threaded through the slots such that the seat belt system is retained in position by the slots as it passes over the rear surface of the backrest portion 33. It will be appreciated that the slots may be opened to receive the seat belt system 20, or may be closed such that the seat belt system 20 passes therethrough. Other arrangements of the retaining members 40 10 are also envisaged to aid in locating and positioning the seat belt system as it passes over the rear surface of the backrest portion 33. As such, in order to position the safety seat 30 on the vehicle seat 5 the seat belt system 20 is taken behind the backrest portion 33 and clipped in place and the tether 35 is secured to the vehicle anchorage point. The order in which these steps 15 are taken may vary, but both steps function to securely retain the safety seat 30 in position in the event of a vehicle accident. Referring to Figures 6 and 7, an alternative embodiment of the safety seat 30 is shown. In this embodiment, the safety seat 30 is positioned in substantially the same manner as described above, however rather than both the sash belt 21 and lap 20 belt 22 of the seat belt system 20 extending around the rear of the backrest 33 to be held in position by the retaining members 40, only the lap belt 22 extends around the rear of the seat. The sash belt 21 is positioned against the surface of the vehicle seat as shown, and is not directly engaged with the safety seat 30. It will be appreciated that the child safety seat 30 of the present invention is a 25 significant departure from existing rearward facing child safety seats presently available on market, particularly in the manner in which the safety seat 30 is secured in position on the surface of the vehicle seat. By providing a facility for enabling the vehicle seat belt system 20 of the vehicle to wrap around the safety seat 30 and act against and across the backrest portion 33 of the safety seat 30, the 30 vehicle seat belt system is able to operate to provide a resistant force to the safety seat in a downward direction towards the vehicle seat 5. As the seat belt system is securely retained in position against the backrest 33, there is a significant reduction in the likelihood of the seat belt system slipping away from an optimal position and compromising the safety of the child retained therein. 35 The present invention also avoids the need to thread the seat belt system through the base of the safety seat, which is a cumbersome and difficult task, and overcomes the likelihood of the seat belt system being misplaced and becoming displaced, which is common in such systems where the seat belt system is threaded through the base of the safety seat. Throughout the specification and claims the word "comprise"' and its derivatives 5 are intended to have an inclusive rather than exclusive meaning unless the contrary is expressly stated or the context requires otherwise. That is, the word "comprise" and its derivatives will be taken to indicate the inclusion of not only the listed components, steps or features that it directly references, but also other components, steps or features not specifically listed, unless the contrary is expressly stated or 1o the context requires otherwise. It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that many modifications and variations may be made to the methods of the invention described herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Orientational terms used in the specification and claims such as vertical, 15 horizontal, top, bottom, upper and lower are to be interpreted as relational and are based on the premise that the component, item, article, apparatus, device or instrument will usually be considered in a particular orientation, typically with the safety seat uppermost.
Claims (10)
1. A child safety seat for use in accommodating a child in a rearward facing position in a vehicle, comprising: a body having a backrest portion and a seat portion for receiving the child 5 therein; a base configured to be received on a seat of the vehicle to support the body thereon; a tether attached to said body and having a hook member to facilitate attachment to an anchorage point on the vehicle; and 10 at least one retaining member provided on a rear surface of the backrest portion, the at least one retaining member being configured to receive and retain in position a seat belt system of the vehicle around the backrest portion of the body to aid in securing the child safety seat to the seat of the vehicle. 15
2. A child safety seat according to claim 1, wherein the at least one retaining member comprises a pair of elongate fingers provided on a rear surface of the backrest portion of the body, the pair of elongate fingers defining a space into which the seat belt system of the vehicle is received.
3. A child safety seat according to claim 2, wherein the seat belt system of the 20 vehicle comprises a lap belt and/or a sash belt and the lap belt and/or the sash belt is received within the space.
4. A child safety seat according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one retaining member is located on the rear surface of the backrest portion adjacent the base. 25
5. A child safety seat according to claim 4, wherein the at least one retaining member is formed integral with the body.
6. A child safety seat according to claim 1, wherein the at least one retaining member comprises a slot or recess formed in the rear surface of the backrest portion in which the seat belt system of the vehicle is received and retained. 30
7. A child safety seat according to claim 6, wherein the slot or recess is formed adjacent opposing sides of the rear surface of the backrest portion.
8. A child safety seat according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein a groove or channel is formed on the rear surface of the backrest portion to receive the seat belt system of the vehicle as it passes around the backrest portion of the body. 5

A method of securing a child safety seat in a rearward facing mode on a seat of a vehicle comprising: positioning the child safety seat on said vehicle such that a base portion of the child safety seat is supported on the surface of the vehicle seat: tethering an upper region of the child safety seat to an anchorage point on a 10 vehicle; extending at least a lap belt of a seat belt of the vehicle around the child safety seat such that the lap belt is received by one or more retaining members located on a rear surface of a backrest of the child safety seat; and connecting the at least lap belt of the seat belt of the vehicle to a buckle of 1s the vehicle.
10. A child safety seat substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to any one or more of Figures 3 - 7.
