Description

1 Description This invention relates to a device for the aerobic composting of organic matter such as food waste, green waste, manures and compostable packaging. Organic waste is a significant problem worldwide. It is estimated that up to 50% of waste going to landfill is organic. Organic waste in landfill is a major contributor to the greenhouse gas methane. Organic waste could be dealt with at the sites where it is produced using a composting process and turned into a useful material for landscaping and soil conditioning. There exists numerous composting technologies, these include vermicomposting, anaerobic composting and aerobic composting. Horizontal automated aerobic composting machines are used worldwide for dealing with large amounts of organic waste, these either have a rotating cylinder to aerate, agitate and transfer the waste through the system or are stationary and have a rotating internal auger system. Stationary composters with internal augers are advantageous as they are safe, quiet, produce little to no smell, and are frugal in their use of energy. However these machines have several limitations, one of which is that the composting rate is affected by the amount of moisture in the waste, therefore these machines benefit from a dewatering stage prior to composting or require the addition of bulking agents such as wood pellets to the chamber to soak up excess moisture in the chamber. This problem is overcome by the present invention. The invention is a horizontal stationary composter with an internal auger system. The composter incorporates a significant area of perforations in its cylinder which allows excess liquid to efficiently drain from the system and thus optimising the composting process. The liquid is funneled into an external collection system where it can then be safely dispose of or used in another application.

Claims (5)

1. A composting system including a stationary, horizontal, cylindrical or largely cylindrical chamber, with an inlet at one end and an outlet at the other end, a rotating auger shaft centrally mounted within the chamber with discrete transfer arms fitted to the auger shaft, the auger shaft being rotatable in either direction, an external motor/gearbox arrangement which rotates the auger shaft, discrete sensor modules for monitoring environmental conditions within the chamber, a blower system for drawing air through the chamber, a drainage system for removing liquid from the chamber and a microprocessor based device for controlling the overall operation of the composting system and recording environmental conditions within the chamber, wherein aeration, agitation and transfer of the composting matter through the chamber is performed by the transfer arms, the transfer arms featuring a paddle shaped blade where the pitch of the blade can be adjusted to change the rate of transfer, with an additional set of maceration arms attached to the auger shaft to increase the maceration and dewatering rate of composting material in the chamber.
2. The composting system as claimed in claim 1, wherein maceration and de watering is performed on composting material when the auger arm rotates in either direction, the maceration arms featuring one or more saw-toothed or sharp edged knives which serve to size-reduce, tear or break up large agglomerates of compostable material.
3. The composting system as claimed in claim 2, wherein the maceration arms are affixed to the auger shaft via fixing plates, the fixing plates allowing the rapid change to the number or type of maceration arms.
4. The composting system as claimed in claim 3, wherein numerous small, sharp protrusions are attached to one or more surfaces of the inside of the chamber in order to accelerate the maceration process of the composting material.
5. A composting system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
