Description

2'j-C1 -OG;10: 15 1 KIT FOR INSTALLING A UTILITY HARDLID LIFTER FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to self fit kits for installing a lifter for a utility hardlid tray cover and in particular remote controlled hardlid lifters.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Hardlid covers have been used on style side utilities for many years as a more durable and convenient alternative to the traditional canvas cover. However, the manual hardlid can be difficult to lift and to maintain in the open position usually with a hinged rod which has to be propped in a fixing position.
Gas assisted struts have been used in an attempt to make manual lifting of the hardlid easier. Also electrically operated worm drive struts are available to lift the hardlid automatically thus eliminating the need for manual effort and making the opening process easier and safer for the user.
However the struts are usually attached to the floor of the utility tray which can damage the floor structure and also takes up the available storage space on the tray. Furthermore professional installation is required to minimize these problems and this can be expensive and time consuming.
COMS ID No: ARCS-221007 Received by IP Australia: Time 11:15 Date 2009-01-23 -01-09;10 :1 5 4 9 2 OBJECT OF THE INVENTION It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a kit which allows the user to self install a remotely operated utility hardlid lifter or at least provides an alternative to existing hardlid lifters.
STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION According to the present invention a kit for the installation of an automatic utility hardlid lifter comprises two brackets adapted to bolt to the side walls of the utility tray, two electrically operated struts mounted between the side wall brackets and the hardlid and a controller which controls the operation of the struts.
Preferably the kit contains a remote control unit.
Preferably the spine of the brackets is shaped to accommodate the shape of the utility tray side wall.
Preferably the side wall struts are worm drive struts.
Alternatively the side wall struts are hydraulic struts.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS An embodiment of the invention is now described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Fig 1 is a schematic illustration of a utility hardlid lifter installation.
Fig 2 is an isometric view of the support bracket of Fig 1 and Fig 3 is an isometric view of an alternative support bracket.
COMS ID No: ARCS-221007 Received by IP Australia: Time 11:15 Date 2009-01-23 23-0 -0S;i10:5 3 DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Fig 1 shows hardlid 3 hinged to the utility body behind the rear window (not shown) and contains socket joints 5 for attaching struts. The hardlid lifter is installed by first bolting brackets 1 to the inside of both walls of the utility tray.
Worm drive struts 2 with electric motors 6 are then pivoted at foot 4 of brackets 1 and at socket joints 5 attached to the inside of hardlid 3.
Electric motors 6 are controlled via cables 8 by controller 7 which is powered by the utility battery (not shown). Remote control unit 9 in turn operates controller 7 which activates struts 2 to lift or lower hardlid 3 as required.
Fig 2 shows bracket 1 which is adapted to bolt to the inside wall of the utility tray using three elongated holes 11 in the top of bracket 1 which allow flexibility in the positioning of the bolts to suit the particular utility tray. In Fig 3 vertical spine 12 of alternative bracket 1 is offset to accommodate the shape of a re-entrant side. The shape of brackets 1 is varied depending on the make of the utility.
In accordance with the present invention all the components required for a remote operated utility hardlid lifter are provided in a kit with instructions for easy and fast installation. Brackets 1 of the kit will vary depending on the make of the utility and the instructions will detail the attachment points for different makes.
VARIATIONS
It will be realized that the foregoing has been given by way of illustrative example only and that all other modifications and variations as would be apparent to persons skilled in the art are deemed to fall within the broad scope and ambit of the invention as herein set forth. Throughout the description and claims of this specification the words "comprise" and variations of that word such as "comprises" and "comprising" are not intended to exclude other additive components integers or steps.
