Description
Pattern Based Security Device The following statement is a full description of this invention including the best method of performing it known to me: Pattern Based Security Device With the increase in the use of touchscreens for receiving information this device has been designed to provide an increased level of protection when entering in sensitive information such as a PIN (personal Identification Number) number.
The device consists of two major components a hardware device and software. The hardware device allows the user to interact with the said device via some sort of touch or manual input mechanism, it must also have some method of displaying data. A typical configuration of this hardware device would be a personal computer fitted with a touch enabled monitor or a hand held computing device.
The hardware device works in conjunction with a piece of software that generates a single or series of random vertical and horizontal patterns. These patterns will be generated at some process point in a pre-defined sequence i.e. after a user has somehow activated the system.
Figure 1-4 of the attached drawing shows possible randomly generated patterns Thread pattern There are two types of patterns generated the first is a thread pattern. The thread pattern contains information that a user is able to identify with, it could be numbers, letters or symbols. Each number, letter or symbol is displayed on a shape, this shape may or may not be random in width and height.
The thread pattern is arranged in a logical sequential order that should allow a user to quickly identify the sequential order. This sequential order may or may not be hi-lighted. The user is able to then select any of these number, letters or symbols in any order by some sort of input process, this could be via a touchscreen or a mechanical device such as a computer mouse or keyboard. As the user makes a selection the data associated with that selection is stored in a secure format on the hardware device. The hardware device at this point may or may not generate a new thread and confusion pattern.
Confusion Pattern Surrounding the thread pattern may or may not be a series of confusion patterns. The confusion pattern is designed to hide the shape of the thread pattern, and may do this through the use of colors, symbols and patterns. When the user has finished entering data this information would be taken from its secure storage area and then transmitted to a third party device for further processing. The display device would then remove the pattern information from the viewing device.
Because the software generates a random sized pattern with a random number of shapes that may or may not have information in them, generates a confusion pattern that may or may not be around the outside of the thread pattern and may or may not update in the process of the user entering information, it means that the likelihood of a third party person being able to view a users personal information as it it entered and stored is decreased significantly.
Claims (4)
1. A system including a data communication device and a user interface that generates a random or pre-defined logical sequence pattern that may or may not be surrounded by a confusion pattern of shapes and colors.
2. A system as claimed in claim 1 that a user is able to interact with via a touchable, manual or mechanical element that responds to input
3. A system as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 that accepts the users input and securely transmits this data to a third party device for processing.
4. A system as claimed in claim 1 3 that may be a digital based or mechanical based system or a combination of both. A system as claimed in claim 1 4 with reference to figures 1 4 of the accompanying drawings.
