Abstract
A method for performing a handover of a mobile station (10, 51) from a serving base station to a target base station (14, 56) in a packet switched wireless communications system. In the method, resources are allocated and assigned between the mobile station (10, 51) and the target base station (14, 56) while maintaining connection of the mobile station (10, 51) to a network of the communications system through the serving base station (12, 52) so that the mobile station (10, 51) may thereafter re-establish connection to the network through the target base station (14, 56) without interruption of an ongoing data transfer session. The invention provides for a substantially seamless handover in a packet switched wireless system, such as a GPRS/EGPRS system, so as to enable the system to effectively support delay sensitive services such as voice communications.
