Process for the production of mixtures of cellulose and rubber.
Mixtures of cellulose and rubber are already known, but all attempts to find a practically useful combination between pure rubber (Para) and cellulose respectively. The production of viscose failed because the rubber solvents known commercially (gasoline, carbon disulfide, etc.) are actually unable to dissolve either the sodium xanthate or its alkaline solution (viscose), but only form emulsions. As a result, it has hitherto been impossible to produce such mixtures whose physical properties (such as elasticity, toughness, insulating properties, etc.) completely match those of cellulose and rubber.
It has now been shown that things behave completely differently if one no longer uses the synthetic rubber solutions, but the rubber solution produced by nature, namely the rubber milk. Alkaline cellulose solutions, in particular viscose, are namely able to mix with Gutnmimiich and this mixture can remain long enough without disadvantageous change in a state in which easy industrial processing is possible.
The behavior of this mixture in relation to the usual compression or coagulation baths, which are used to precipitate the cellulose contained in the viscose, remains the same as compared to the viscose alone. The mixture can be composed in any proportions, which depend on the particular objects to be produced therefrom, and can be solidified, for example, by ammonia sulfate (process steam); the compression could also be achieved either by heat alone or by dilute mineral acids, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid. The following washes can be carried out in warm or cold water.
From what has just been said, it is evident that it is possible to mix rubber and cellulose in any desired ratio with the help of viscose. in a quality that does justice to the most diverse branches of manufacture.
You can also vary certain other properties, such as B. the elasticity, d \ e suppleness, by proceeding with the product obtained in the same way as with all the substances that contain rubber. Such variations can namely be brought about by the gradual vulcanization of the rubber, effected by various means, which is contained in the products obtained by treating the viscose with rubber milk. This vulcanization can be carried out in various well known ways, e.g. B. on the hot route by treatment with sulfur vapors or on the cold route by means of sulfur chloride.
This cellulose-rubber mixture can not only be produced using the viscose solution, but also using any other alkaline cellulose solution, e.g. B. the copper-ammonia solution from Schweizer.
