Es ist oft zweckmässig, einen oder mehrere der Behälter oder Erweiterungen grösser als den oder die anderen zu machen und solche grössere Behälter nur für die metallurgischen Vorgänge zu benützen, während die kleineren zur Aufnahme der Masse dienen, welche von den grösseren Behältern zu den kleineren durch die Erhitzungkanäle geflossen ist, um später zu den grösseren Behältern zurückzufliessen und dort die aufgenommene Wärme abzugeben.
Ein solcher Ofen kann als gewöhnlicher Widerstandsofen für Gleich-oder Wechselstrom, als kombinierter Lichtbogen-und Widerstandsofen oder als Induktionsofen ausgeführt werden.
