Process for the glossing of substances made from celluloid and similar substances
Objects.
Objects made of celluloid are usually given a shine by dipping them in glacial acetic acid and letting them dry in the air. This operation can be performed well outdoors in dry weather. But when the air is humid and foggy, a firmly adhering, white, spotty layer is formed on the celluloid goods, which makes them unabridable. If you want to avoid this problem, you have to work in closed and heated rooms in damp weather. However, as the room will soon be filled with the caustic vapors of glacial acetic acid, this is associated with significant inconvenience and damage to health for those working with it.
It has now been found that this problem can be remedied in a simple manner
EMI1.1
technical effect is a significant one. It can be used to achieve a beautiful shine on celluloid goods even in the most humid weather outdoors, provided, of course, that the acetic anhydride content of the mixture is sufficiently large.
EXAMPLE: The celluloid articles are immersed in a mixture of 2 parts acetic anhydride, 1 part glacial acetic acid and 2 parts toluene for approximately one second
