Österreichische PATENTSCHRIFT NI"17707.
CARL HARTL JUN. 11\ WIEN.

Austrian PATENT LETTER NI "17707.
CARL HARTL JUN. 11 \ VIENNA.
Process for the production of solid fatty acids from oleic acid.
According to the known method for preparing solid fatty acids suitable as candle material from oleic acid and oleic acid-containing fatty acids by means of sulfuric acid, the starting materials mentioned are first treated with concentrated sulfuric acid and then subjected to distillation with superheated steam.
This distillation following the sulfuric acid treatment is necessary because the oleic acid and oleic acid-containing fatty acids, due to the impurities (dyes, etc.) that are always adhering to them, produce charring products during the sulfuric acid treatment and the latter give them an intense black color, which can only be achieved by distilling the black fatty acid mass
EMI1.1
Oxystearic acid breaks down in the distillation into isoleic acid and liquid oleic acid, so that about half of the oxystearic acid is converted into liquid oleic acid, i.e. H. is converted back into an inferior product which cannot be used as candle material.
This disadvantage is now within the meaning of the subject of the present invention
EMI1.2
acids are first subjected to distillation with superheated steam and only then treated in the usual way with concentrated sulfuric acid. This also has the advantage that the action of the concentrated sulfuric acid on the oleic acid-containing fatty acids freed from the organic impurities by the distillation no longer causes charring in the latter and therefore does not cause any further losses of the solid fatty acids to be achieved.
The somewhat darker color imparted to the fatty acids by the specified treatment can be obtained in a known manner by treatment with a metal powder such as zinc dust and the like. s. w. be eliminated.
This process increases the overall yield of solid fatty acids and in particular the entire amount of oxystearic acid formed during the sulfuric acid treatment is obtained as candle material through the subsequent pressing in hydraulic or filter presses. The following may serve as an example of the practical implementation of the innovation identified above: 100 kg of oleic acid or fatty acids containing oleic acid, which are initially subjected to distillation with superheated steam, are treated according to the known process with sulfuric acid from f) 8-660 Bé, in order to break down the formed Oleic sulfuric acid is boiled with water, whereupon the resulting reaction product is heated in open vessels with 1-100 / 0 zinc dust up to 1000 C.
Then the whole thing is treated with a dilute mineral acid to break down the metal soaps that have formed and finally pressed in hydraulic or filter presses.
