Manufacture of forged or cast objects, which in the polished state must be absolutely rustproof, alkali and scaling resistant and highly wear-resistant, made of carbon
Iron alloys containing chromium, molybdenum and optionally nickel.
Iron-chromium-molybdenum and iron-chromium-molybdenum-nickel alloys with a chromium content of up to 50% and a nickel content of up to 15%, depending on the conditions, are used to produce objects with high chemical resistance. Technology is of the opinion that the primary carrier of the properties that characterize these alloys is the chrome metal, the influence of which is increased above certain levels, however, by the addition of molybdenum. According to previous knowledge, even a low-carbon steel alloy requires a certain amount of chromium in order to be resistant to corrosive influences, and at least 13% chromium is required to make the alloys rust-resistant in the tempered and polished state.
The invention now relates to the use of a steel alloy which contains only 3-13% chromium, 5-15% molybdenum, 0.1-2% carbon and optionally 1-30% nickel for the production of forged or cast objects that are polished in the Condition absolutely rustproof, caustic
EMI1.1
a molybdenum surcharge has such a favorable effect on the structure of the chrome steels or the chrome castings that these alloys become absolutely rust-proof, alkali-resistant and scaling-resistant even with a chromium content that alone does not confer these properties on the forged or cast objects.
The use of such low-chromium steel alloys, apart from the associated economy, is also of particular advantage because the objects made from them can be shaped and processed particularly well in contrast to pure chromium or chromium-nickel steels. The latter property of the alloy to be used is of considerable importance because the surfaces exposed to the corrosive influences must be carefully smoothed and polished.
The molybdenum-containing chromium alloys described also have a surprisingly high Brinell hardness, which, for example, in an alloy with 6% chromium, 6% molybdenum and 0'35% carbon on a forged piece was over 600, so that it is particularly advantageous to produce highly wear-resistant objects and acid-resistant cutting edges - Have tools made with great cutting edge retention. The chromium-molybdenum alloys can contain 1-30% nickel. The addition of nickel has a positive effect on its strength and, from a certain level, also on the elongation of the alloy. Of course, other elements which temper the steel in a known manner can also be used.
The silicon content of the alloy should be up to 1'2%.
