Crucibles for aluminothermic purposes.
For aluminothermic purposes, crucibles are known which consist of an iron sheet shell which is lined with a refractory mass, into which, for example, tar magnesite is tamped into the shell via a cone and the pulped mass is burned. During use, the crucible lining wears off very heavily in the lower part, but hardly at all in the upper part.
Crucibles have therefore already been manufactured which have a magnesite lining in the lower part and the upper part of which is made of cast iron or the like. With these crucibles, too, the lining must be tamped down with heavy hammers, since a lining holds the better the more firmly it is tamped. The lining of the crucible is very laborious and the crucible shell suffers extremely badly when the lining is annealed due to scaling.
The present invention now creates a crucible in which the crucible lining can be pressed under the greatest pressure independently of the crucible shell and which only fills the part of the crucible shell that is attacked by the aluminothermic reaction. The lining according to the invention is significantly cheaper, more durable and easier to replace than the lining in the known crucibles.
The drawing shows an embodiment of the crucible. A is the crucible shell, b the lining of the crucible, c refractory mortar, d is a metal ring which forms the upper part of the crucible and at the same time serves to hold the lining in place. g is an exchangeable discharge nozzle, t are screws for pulling the upper and lower part of the crucible together.
The crucible shell a is coated with a paste c of refractory mortar, the lining b is placed in it and, after the ring d has been put on, it is pressed firmly into the shell by the screws f. After inserting the discharge nozzle g, the crucible is ready for use.
