Claim 1: A method of producing ethanol comprising: esterifying acetic acid and ethanol in a first reaction zone to produce an ester feed stream; reacting at least a portion of the ester feed stream with hydrogen in a second reaction zone to produce a crude reaction mixture comprising ethyl acetate, ethanol, and at least one alcohol having at least 4 carbon atoms; separating at least a portion of the crude reaction mixture in a first distillation column to promote a first distillate comprising ethyl acetate and a first residue comprising ethanol; and separating at least a portion of the first residue in a second distillation column to provide a secondary stream of ethanol and a second residue comprising the at least one alcohol having at least 4 carbon atoms.
