Abstract

An improved battery leaching process for bacterial leaching of base metal sulfide ores, the process being characterized by the addition of elemental sulphide to the ore, where the sulfur oxidizing bacteria, innate or added to the ore, can oxidize elemental sulfide and general heat inside the ore pile. Claim 5: An improved battery leaching process for bacterial leaching of base metal sulphide ores containing a mineral or a set of minerals that require temperatures greater than 45s C for efficient oxidation of the ore or each of the minerals, the process being characterized by the addition of elemental sulfide to the ore, where the elemental sulfur is oxidized at temperatures below 45s C by mesophilic bacteria present in the ore pipe, generating this oxidation of the elemental sulfur heat, and increasing the internal temperature of the battery progressively so that thermophilic bacteria can operate.
