Abstract

Se refiere a una semilla de girasol que comprende un aceite de girasol con un contenido aumentado de ácido estático, en comparacion con semillas del tipo natural (preferentemente entre 19,1 y 35% en peso en relacion con la cantidad total de ácidos grasos en el aceite y comprendiendo el aceite al menos 3,4% de las especies de triacilglicerol que tienen la formula general SMS y no menos de 5,0% de las especies de triacilglicerol que tienen la formula general SMM), semilla que puede ser obtenida tratando semillas parentales con un agente mutagénico durante un período de tiempo y en una concentracion suficiente para inducir una o más mutaciones en la característica genética implicada en la biosíntesis del ácido esteárico, lo que resulta en una produccion aumentada de ácido esteárico, germinando las semillas tratadas y cultivando a partir de las mismas una progenie de plantas, recolectando y analizando semillas de la progenie, seleccionando semillas que han adquirido las características genéticas deseables y repitiendo opcionalmente el ciclo de germinacion, cultivacion y recoleccion de las semillas. La invencion se refiere además al aceite extraído de las semillas, a un método para preparar las semillas de girasol, a un método para preparar tal aceite de girasol, a plantas de girasol producidas a partir de las semillas y al uso del aceite.
