Abstract

Un componente, o artículo, moldeado, para uso biomédico, es preparado a partir de un polímero reticulable en agua que al ser reticulado y saturado con agua forma un hidrogel. El polímero es formulado en forma de una composición que contiene un diluyente no acuoso además del polímero, hallándose el diluyente presente en una proporción volumétrica que es sustancialmente igual a la proporción volumétrica del agua en el hidrogel que sería formada cuando el polímero está reticulado y saturado con agua. La composición es colada en un molde en la cual la composición es expuesta a condiciones que hacen que tenga lugar la reticulación mediante una reacción frente a la cual el diluyente no acuosa es inerte. La reacción de reticulación produce un gel no acuoso moldeado que es seguidamente convertido a un hidrogel mediante la sustitución del diluyente no acuoso por un líquido acuoso tal como agua o una solución fisiológica salina. La utilización de una composición de moldeo cuyo curado consiste de manera esencialmente completa en una reticulación, tiene como resultado un proceso de moldeo que implica poca o ninguna retracción, y la integridad dimensional es mantenida durante la formación del hidrogel mediante la utilización del diluyente no acuoso en esencialmente la misma proporción volumétrica que en agua en al hidrogel.
