Abstract

A synergistic relationship has been discovered between the titanyl oxalate catalyst and the catalyst enhancer. In addition, a synergic relationship between the titanyl oxalate catalyst, the catalyst enhancer and the metal co-catalyst such as antimony oxide or antimonium triacetate has been discovered. It also provides an improved process for producing polyester by polycondensation of the reagents that form polyester in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of a polycondensation catalyst, in which the improvement comprises the use, as a polycondensation catalyst, of the novel catalyst composition that It contains titanyl oxalate such as lithium titanium oxalate and a catalyst enhancer such as metal oxalate that does not contain titanyl, com or lithium oxalate, and, optionally, it contains a metal catalyst such as antimony oxide or antimony tricetate. The improved process produces a polyester that has less acetaldehyde and a good color. The titanium oxala to / catalyst enhancer composition can be used as a polycondensation catalyst in combination with other catalysts to achieve synergistic catalytic activity. A combination of lithium and titanyl oxalate, Li2TiO (C2 O4), lithium oxalate, Li2 (C2O4) with ammonium oxide or ammonium triacetate or antimony trisglycoxide is preferred.
