Abstract

The transformed plants obtained co-express high levels of both 15 kD and 10 kD zein proteins that accumulate at high levels as protein bodies in the plant's plant tissue. Transformed plants are useful for providing forage crops that contain increased levels of sulfur-containing amino acids, such as methionine, in the diet of animals that normally feed on such crops. The transformed pl tissue plants obtained comprise stable protein bodies that contain heterologous proteinaceous material. The stable protein bodies obtained are expressed in a plant or plant tissue as a fusion protein comprising a zein protein and an operably linked peptide or protein. The protein bodies provided are resistant to rumen digestion or environmental degradation.
