Abstract

Se descubrió, aisló y caracterizó un elemento regulador consistente en una molécula de ADN de 94 pares de base que confiere a la expresión genéticaespecificidad con respecto al tapetum de las anteras. Se desarrollaron elementos reguladoresespecíficos para el tapetum adicionales por mutación dela caja de anteras de 94 pares de base. Estos elementos reguladores específicos para el tapetum pueden ser usados para controlar la expresión de un gen foráneoque altera la función de las célulasde tapetum. En forma similar, la combinación de por lo menos un elemento regulador específico para el tapetumy por lo menos un elemento regulador específico para las anteras puede ser usado para alterar la producción de polen en las anteras. De este modo sepuede lograr el control de la producción del polen en el maíz usando un elemento regulador específico para el tapetum para producir plantas conesterilidad masculina. Se pueden usar diversos métodos para restaurar lafertilidad masculina en la generación F1 de dichas plantas con esterilidadmasculina.
