Abstract

Los elementos absorbentes de fluido comprenden tres componentes básicos: fibras químicamente endurecidas, retorcidas, y rizadas para aportar volumen,fibras de área de superficie elevada, y aditivo químico aglutinante. Los elementos absorbentes de fluido utilizan una fibra de área de superficieelevada para proveer presión (o succión) capilar al elemento de absorción de fluido. Estas fibras de área de superficie elevada son generalmentepequenas y muy amoldables. Las fibras proporcionan al substrato con presión capilar muy superior a la presión capilar que se encuentra solamente en lasfibras (sin refinar) químicamente endurecidas, retorcidas, y rizadas que aportan volumen. Una fibra actualmente para esta aplicación de área desuperficie elevada es la familia de eucalipto de fibras de pulpa de madera. El eucalipto provee características deseables de presión capital encombinación con las fibras químicamente endurecidas, retorcidas y rizadas y no pasará fácilmente a través del tamiz formador. Fibras de eucaliptoparticularmente adecuadas incluyen aquellas de la especie eucalyptus grandis. Los elementos absorbentes de fluido se pueden utilizar ventajosamente comoun componente del núcleo absorbente en distintos tipos de artículos absorbentes, e. g., almohadillas catameniales desechables, panalesdesechables, y calzoncillos de incontinencia desechables, que comprenden también una hoja superior permeable al fluido y una hoja posteriorimpermeable al fluido, unida a la hoja superior, en donde el núcleo absorbente se coloca entre los mismos.
